I love how Eve's and Ahri's videos use water. Ahri's water is still and reflective while Eve's water is always turbulent and doesn't allow for a clear reflection.
The contrast of Eve's "I don't want to be seen" and Ahri's "I want to be seen as who I really am" is both ironic and poignant.

I feel that the disparity between the upbeat music and the downbeat lyric and visual nicely illustrates the fracture between the public and private faces of the character - as if she suffers in silence, too afraid to be vulnerable, showing only smiles publicly. I think that echos the broken glass as she’s split apart and made to be two people.

There is no contrast what so ever. Everything is actually positive. The song, the lyrics and even the video.
The song and the clip fit just fine. It basically says she feels trapped and scared by expectations etc after getting a hit like pop starts but she will not let herself down and show everyone what she is made of and that is why the clip shows her breaking the ice around her and opening the light stick prison and releasing her true nine tail form.
As the song says, she has fear but she will rise above them and show everyone what she is made of and the clip show that as well.
Basically both song and video start off showing a problem but they end up positively in the end, showing she will fight threw it and win.
Also the song is very gentle, is not really as upbeat and happy as Philip here thinks but it isn't depressing ether. Is gentle and sentimental with a positive tone representing her sentimental condition that ends positively.

The two posters of Ahri that are seen as she walks by them are "Popstar Ahri" and "K/DA Popstars Ahri" (two skins in the actual League of Legends game). The lore in this K/DA/modern world is originally Ahri had a solo career, not sure how successful it was, but it was basically what the first poster was. The second poster of popstars Ahri, where she seems to have left her solo career behind and decided to pursue this group concept. It would seem just like in real life there was a gap in time between popstars and this comeback album in the K/DA world.

She's a kitsune (Japanese) or kumiho (Korean), not a Kurama. A kitsune is a 9-tailed fox. Kurama is the name of the 9-tailed fox in the anime, Naruto - as in, the creature's actual name, not its species.
Also something that just struck me: The shot with her standing up in the broken sphere of lights, as they spread out, really looks a lot like the "Birth of Venus" painting. Presumably a deliberate allusion to Ahri's "rebirth" here.

The Kai'sa thing is kinda sad because the young dancer featured in the video has done an absolutely amazing job, but nobody can wholeheartedly appreciate it because nobody asked for it & wanted it. i've read also that they went this route due to dance moves being very hard to properly animate, and the final product still seems awkward. We seen tiny bits of dancing in previous songs which to me with no taste and knowledge seemed great, but there were people pointing out some awkwardness and feeling of " unrealistic" moves here and there.
Think it would stand out much more is full video of dancing.

The picture of the outfit on the wall next to the pop/stars one is a different skin it's pop/star ahri and it's quite old and had a hand in the inspiration behind KDA since they had this line of pop/star skins for ahri and they took that concept and mixed it with more K-pop giving the "pop-star" skin a face lift and modernized it to create KDA ahri. So in a way it represents her past before she joined kda. And also ties into there first song since we'll the skin was called pop star ahri and the first kda song was pop stars xD

I see other people have already mentioned the inaccuracy on how you identified the posters, so I just wanted to mention, you said it's that same moon from K/DA Popstars. In that video, it's actually a star. Right before you see what's called a supernova, as a result of which, "a new star is born", almost as if Ahri is showing "look, we are the new stars". So it's actually not a moon but a star back there :)

The video/song is about depression/dealing with toxic fans. Ahri herself
being shy, not having the job she liked and even after she formed K/DA
with the other girls and got a hit (Popstars): You can see the newspaper
"One hit wonder?", people trying to bring you down or not seeing what
work you put in. Ahri's song is about overcoming all this, not letting
others tell you how to live and becoming the person you want to be.

  • @OpDDay2001
    @OpDDay2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The dissonance between the upbeat sound of the song, some of the song's sometimes depressing lyrics, and the decidedly retro-introspective and somber video are definitely intended. The story being told is in the video definitely makes this song better. This song was, to me, the weakest song on the album. But for a song like this to be the weakest song isn't a slight. The song is pretty great and catchy and tells a story but I really liked other songs more. The Concept Video for this song does sooooo much to make the song more impactful though. Also, as a note, I really, reaaallly think that the prismatic kaleidoscope scenes are meant to mimic the neural patterning of the human mind. That's something I haven't seen anyone mention.
The All-Out EP was basically telling the backstories of the members of K/DA (in the KDA/DJ Sona/True Damage Universe) in the form of 'character songs'. Ahri was a K-Pop popstar/idol who started making music for the love of it and she wanted to convey things through songs, but she eventually felt more and more constrained by the strict structure and cookie-cutter music that dominates the industry. Her label and contract were forcing her to live a life that was no longer hers.
She had enough, and so she broke her own contract and formed K/DA with Evelynn (I, personally, also accredit Akali as the de facto third co-founder). She found success there but she started to feel depressed and constrained again because of the press, the lovers and the haters, and the expectations put on her. It is worth mentioning that the graffiti on the "crystal" she's suspended in isn't all (or even most) negative. It says positive things but in that crude way that fans often do: "Ahri is my life"; "I love you, Ahri"; and so on. She feels trapped by her fans too, because they might not lover her for her but for what their IDEA of her is. This is a very real thing, especially in the K-Pop/J-Pop Band/Idol scene (contracts can be so strict as to not allow the contractee to [publicly] have a significant other because it hurts their marketability) as well as in the entertainment industry in general.
So the story being told here is that Ahri was trapped in her own head. She felt trapped by her past, her fame, and everything. She longed for the innocent days when she was just getting started. When she had drive and love for the music she ways doing. She basically felt like she wasn't herself anymore. The story progresses by showing and comparing her history as an artist. She formed K/DA out of love for the music but she was starting to be afraid that it would start turning back into the situation that made her want to quit in the first place (it is why we see Popstar Ahri and K/DA Popstars Ahri posters as well as why we keep seeing K/DA in her reflections). But, she starts putting the pieces back in place. She starts, literally and figuratively, moving forward with her life.
Facing her fears. Keeping the fire and drive in her heart going. She uses K/DA to repair her love for her craft. She uses her experiences to propel her to new, unexplored heights. That's the reason for the starry, black infinite void towards the end. She's exploring, for her, untouched ground and is finding that that process is restoring the shattered pieces of her mind, soul, and life.

I absolutely love the distinct separation between the video and the song tone and I think it's pretty much perfectly summarized in that last shot with the mirror. On the surface and from a distance it's happy and perfect but on closer inspection it's fractured and damaged. Really exceptional to me. I also love the shot where she's frozen in place on stage with fan comments written on the pillar, almost like fans immortalizing her in their favorite form of her and not allowing her to grow and change. I wasn't the biggest fan of this song on release but with the video I love it a dozen times more.

  • @whyitisY

At 16:21 you've talked about her returning to form. It reminds me of the lotus symbol which is quite common in east asian culture and symbolism, which usually represents rebirth, enlightenment (they use led lights and opened it for her enlightenment and they also showed us more of the wide shot), purity (throwback to her pre-idol days pic), and self-regeneration (after the lotus led lights open, her shattered broke mirror/prism imagery got fixed).
It's a tedious process to grow-up/bloom, just like the lotus flower metaphor they used for some shots and scene. So I feel the song ended in a bit of lighter mood in terms of tone but not that much to the point that it's cringey and ala-typical to a Pop song MV which cured your "sadness"/"issues with yourself" to the full extent.

  • @michaelmayo
    @michaelmayo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I hate being three years late...
FYI (in case you haven't discovered it yet), the Riot MV team said the tried to figure out where to put KDA and deliberately decided to 180 from the fantasy setting they're usually in and portray them as real beings in our world, hence the laundromats (which another commenter said pop up in a lot of Kvideos), tunnels, subways, etc.
I think K/DA was a brilliant idea, not only because the music is so good, but that they had to write to established characters and capture their essence - Evelynn's a sexy demon, Akali's a rapping badass, Ka'sai seems to have a thing going with Evelynn determined to annoy her, and Ahri's the bright leader suffering bouts of artistic uncertainty. (This is probably the song that hits hardest with Kpop professionals. I watched an interview with an obviously tired Soyeon where she acknowledged people think she's a genius, but she didn't look particularlly happy about it because it's just more pressure to keep producing genius-level songs.)
Anyway, great analysis of the songs. They drive me nuts a little bit because you stop so much, but then you catch things that just zip by, so I grumble but watch 'em anyway because I learn a lot.
Riot seems to have put K/DA to sleep for the moment and I hope it's only temporary. These are such great songs, even independent of the MVs, that I hope we get "More" someday...(and bring Sarafine back!)

Absolutely love this video and the contrast now. (Ahri is also kinda my girl so I'm biased). It shows Ahri as the unpopular dorky schoolgirl, to the successfull popstar (the pink poster, but she realised although popular now, it's not the music she wanted to make), to successfull founder of K/DA with Pop/Stars, to the doubt (one-hit wonder) because there was no followup music for three years, the baddest posters (those are the black outfit ones) and more outfits in the pictures, which are all more current day.
The upbeat theme represents sort of the image or face of Ahri that fans see.
The fighting lyrics represent the self doubt, but continueing to fight for her ideals nonetheless.
The fractured mirrors represent the combination of it all as well.
The empty stage is interesting. With it being later in the video, I feel like it shows that Ahri will try to perform the songs the way she wants to, as her young self would want to. Even if that means she'd be unappealing for the industry and fans at large.
It's not a "I win" type of video or song, it's a "I recognize my problems and fears and will keep on fighting for my ideals" type of song.

Yes for this song (explained by Ahri on Spotify) she originally wanted to make an upbeat happy song (hence the bright instrumental and melody) but, as she put it, "when I sat down to record, the lyrics just poured out." The lyrics are speaking a truth about her feelings toward her career and the video reflects the lyrics as opposed to the instrumental.
Also, the characters are not locked to specific vocalists (songs like I'll Show You & Drum Go Dum use completely different vocalists from More & Popstars), but the vocalists are locked to specific characters (whenever Soyeon sings for KDA, she will always be Akali. Same for Miyeon--Ahri, Madison--Evelynn and Jaira--Kai'sa).
There are 2 exceptions. The Baddest, where GIDLE still returned to play Akali & Ahri, but Evelynn & Kai'sa were voiced by different vocalists (Wolftyla & Bea Miller).
Villain saw Madison return to play Evelynn, but also added Kim Petras as Evelynn's voice as well.

I thought of it like that:
Before k/da she was a single pop star she said she wasn't happy because songs were not "hers" , that songs weren't what she wanted, that it wasn't who she wants to be, and that's what we see in this video, about depression, being unhappy about the past self, pop stars references are mostly shown in happy way, when she started to feel like herself and found her way, with friends. Ofc as we can see on "One hit wonders" Newspaper it wasn't easy at start buy as she said it's all ok now
We can see at the end when she gets out of the cage and is on the lotus that basically means she is free from the past and is happy how it is

So basicly, over 150 individual champions (Every single one have at least one story and a biography propose u to click on at least one champ and check it out),
13 Regions, all the way from a Big Agressive Empire (Yes, Noxus.) to the Void. (Void something what shouldnt exist, place from where all bad magical things are goin out).
    And 3 alternative universes.
Sometimes i think game is an addon to universe, not second way around.

I love that you do these without prior knowledge of League lore, it really does highlight how good (or not) they portray key information and your ability to identify it.
I agree with your decision to not react to Kai'sa's Drum Go Dum. Not that it's not good, but that as Kai'sa is highlighted as a dancer and has dance spotlight video (as opposed to an animated story), that seems less of your portfolio.
Not sure if anyone has pointed out to you yet, but League has a few primary categories for all the videos they make: champion spotlights, world lore, skin or event trailers, season cinematics and world championships. Everything you've covered so far is a music video, but they have a lot of other stuff I'd love to hear your thoughts on. Given that you like use of environments and combat aspects my top recommendations would be:
-The Path an Ionian Myth (and if you like it the other half of the story is Kin of the Stained Blade)
    -Project Overdrive
    -Wild Magic
-Light and Shadow (which is the third part of the Star Guardian series, but can be viewed alone)
While some of my personal favorites are older pieces like Legends Never Die, A New Dawn and Get Jinxed, I must say that nothing comes close the artist style points of Villain.
Can't wait to see what you choose next.

You should have a look at True Damage as well, it features Akali and a group she created in between the time of Popstars and More, if I'm right. It's also 2D animation instead of 3D :)

Regarding the controversy: That's just people being self-entitled, salty, and inflexible. I mean, Drum-go-Dum's Concept Video was a bit of a disappointment to me too, but I realize the various reasons for why Riot wanted to do something different. Kai's is the dancer of K/DA and she's about kinetics and freedom. Would I have liked to see an animated Kai'sa video? Definitely. Am I disappointed by what we got? A bit. Do I understand the multitude of reasons that probably led to the decision to do a live-action dance video? Yes.

The song sounds upbeat while the visuals and lyrics are depressing/disturbing because of the pressure to make the music fans want, rather than the music she actual wants to. This fact is referenced in the comics they released before the EP, though I'm sure you haven't read them and would have no other way of knowing. She wants to make different music, but is forced to conform for the fans. So, the lyrics talk about fighting and being torn between what she wants to do and what the fans want from her.

I love your League of Legends cinematic/MV analysis videos!! It's really made me super appreciate the amount of care and effort put into these productions, which is going exceedingly above and beyond what Riot Games needs to do to attract attention to promoting this skin line and virtual collaboration. Like you said in your Villain analysis, Riot really does NOT need to do such an amazing job with these, yet they still took the time and resources to release them! I can't wait to see your analysis of other League of Legends videos like Take Over (Worlds 2020), Phoenix (Worlds 2019), and RISE (Worlds 2018) which also has fight choreography!
I also have started watching your FFVII videos and love them as well. If you're willing to take suggestions going along the same theme as FFVII, I would really recommend you react to FFXIV cinematic videos. They're all high-production videos with Square Enix's golden reputation on the line; plus their most recent expansion's trailer, Shadowbringers (Full Trailer), blew my friends' socks off... and they're not even players of the game!

For favorites... I like Pop/Stars more than More. More is definitely the better technical execution, with better CGI all around, and I can understand why you like the brighter color approach more, but I think Pop/Stars is better emotionally and visually. I also think the dance choreography was better in Pop/Stars than in More. More felt more stilted and artificial (not counting the zero-g stuff).
Villain was just fantastic in every respect. For Villain and Baddest, I saw the songs as pure text animation a while back, and kind of dismissed them, as I wanted more Pop/Stars-like videos. Seeing the Evelynn and Ahri videos makes me hopeful for proper videos for Ka'isa and Akali. The dance video was neat, but nowhere near what I actually want for a character video.
I'll Show You feels like a video that should have been in the second album instead of the first, except then it couldn't make use of the "one hit wonder" headline. It really needs more weight given to the aspect of Ahri trying to prove that she could actually accomplish something on her own, which was presumably her putting together KDA. That was sort of her stepping out on the highwire without anyone else holding her hand (which is vaguely implied in her younger soundbox photo), and then needing to prove that it wasn't just a fluke. It might be that that's in the game lore, or maybe in the fake social media (which I've never looked at), but it doesn't feel supported entirely in the songs/album itself.
Waiting for more Christmas presents from Ka'isa and Akali.

Today Ahry has told us how hard it is to actually fight for success even in such an 'upbeat' industry as kpop.
    And to other news:
Anther kpop sex scandal - Evelyn has raped her producer, destroyed 3d family and forced another poor man into psychiatry rehab.
We have to do something about this!!!
She can't keep getting away with it!!!
...Minister of Internal Affairs, a word to you.

On your VR avatar comments, while I don't think this is a good thing to react on, you might want to watch the Worlds Opening Ceremony two years ago where Popstars debuted with the actual singers interacting with the game characters using AR. If nothing else during the count down you can see the base skinned characters morph into their Popstar skins. Link: th-cam.com/video/p9oDlvOV3qs/w-d-xo.html
