Watching The Honeymooners in 2024 brings back such memories when the world was such a joy to be in looking at it now takes you away from your troubles for a while thank you for showing
How in the hell she managed to keep a straight face while delivering her lines is nothing short of comedic brilliance. Audrey knew how to be the perfect foil for Jackie :)
@Robert Diotalevi Yeah, I've been in the audience for sitcom rehearsals and taping. By the time you've heard a line twenty times it's no longer funny, assuming it ever was.
@robertdiotalevi285 Actually it's a well known fact that The Honeymooners rarely actually rehearsed much at all because Gleason liked the spotananity of comedy and didn't want to lose the energy and steam of fresh jokes or bits.
I started watching this show at like 5 years old with my moms in the 80's and my mother would crack up just watching how I was falling on the floor laughing at ralphs antics....up until her passing we always watched the new year eve marathon every single year so I always laugh and get misty eyed at the same time coming across any honeymooners episodes or clips
He mastered not only spontaneous, agile physical comedy, but the Oscar-winning drama of Harry and Tonto. He was credible without being maudlin. Just born with pure talent; no lessons can teach that.
My father, may God rest his soul, LOVED The Honeymooners. As I watch this, I can hear him laughing as Norton and Ralph bust their moves. Compukatz, this brings back fond memories. I laughed and cried at the same time. I miss that man, but through clips like these, it kind of brings him back to life in my mind. Thanks for posting.
Isn't that beautiful. My parents also loved this, I love Lucy....all the old classics. Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights. Is there anything on tv today we want to share with our kids. Not really.
War Horse 14269 I remember when Jackie Gleason died. Our local Hartford Courant newspaper's cartoonist showed Alice in their apartment, head down and sitting at the kitchen table, crying. Moving. I loved...no, I LOVE, the HONEYMOONERS.
I love Art Carney! The funniest man on television in the 1950s! Even Jackie Gleason said Art was responsible for 90% of the success of The Honeymooners. Art could do impressions, too! He could do an excellent FDR, for one. A great dramatic actor, he won the 1974 Academy Award (Apr. 1975) for Best Actor for his "Harry and Tonto" film.
My 4-year-old granddaughter, born in 2017, 73 years after this episode aired, laughed hysterically at this scene tonight. Gosh i wish kids today could have great television all the time like the "good ol' days!"
When Alice walks in and confronts Ralph dancing, it's like the opposite of when Ralph walks in and encounters Alice and the other woman all doing the mambo in another episode.
How is it this show is as timeless at it is and it's 70 something years old, crazy! That's just true talent. Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, The Odd Couple and The Andy Griffith Show are all classic sitcoms that have not ever been off the air even after all these years. Sign of a true classic is if It can be shown over and over for decade after decade and still get big laughs with a whole new audience that wasn't even born when it came out originally.
I wonder if Jackie didn't like to rehearse. He was so funny. And when there were errors, he always seemed to improvise on the spot. Dean Martin was the same way, but he liked to be funny about it. Jerry Lewis influenced Dean to be spontaneous instead of following a script.
I may only be 54 but I LOVEEEE the Honeymooners and always will! Classic classic! Just the other night I said, "Get the bag, get the bag" Of course none of the 30-somethings and younger at my job knew what the heck I was talking about LOL.
I just learned today that the Hucklebuck is a dance. There has been a band in my city for at least 2 decades and they are named The Hucklebucks. Now I know what their band name refers to. How cool!
The HuckleBuckers was A band from Harlem since 1947 they are the original recorders of the song along with 43 other's before her version was made for the TV show
Comedian Freddy Lewis used to do The Hucklebuck as part of his routine at The Holy City Zoo back in '82. For a short time, he insisted on being called Hucklebuck Lewis.
FAVORITE MOMENTS - 1) The look Alice gives Ralph when he says, "My pin!" and 2) immediately afterward when Ralph bellows "PUT IT ON, NORTON! LET'S GO!!"
TM Rezzek; I share your sentiments exactly. Audrey Meadows brought TRUE and GENUINE emotion to the character of Alice. She really understood Alice & Ralph's poverty and how Love and " the little things in life " are so special.
My favorite Honeymooners moment, when he bellows ," put it on Norton ,let's go"! As a soft spoken type always had a friend like Ralph, party animal ,with BIG MOUTH !!!!
That was cool of Ralph to do that for Alice, especially after he'd run her down so badly about wanting to have just one night of "young" fun for old-time's sake.
I just thought the same thing. It was nice to see an episode where they were going to have some fun in life. I'm a big guy and my girlfriend has the same size and frame of Alice and looks just like her too. When we argue I think of the Honeymooners. I disappointed her, greatly, once and it haunts me. There's a little bit of Ralph Kramden in all men and Jackie Gleason truly tapped into that. Take care of your girl Ralph. Bring her happiness. She loves you like nobody else does.
The Hucklebuck" (sometimes written "The Huckle-Buck") is a jazz and R&B dance tune first popularized by Paul Williams and His Hucklebuckers in 1949. The composition of the tune was credited to Andy Gibson, and lyrics were later added by Roy Alfred. The song became a crossover hit and a dance craze, in many ways foreshadowing the popular success of rock and roll a few years later. It was successfully recorded by many other musicians including Lucky Millinder, Roy Milton, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Chubby Checker, Bo Diddley, Otis Redding, Canned Heat, Coast to Coast, Brendan Bowyer and Crystal Swing
That's the truth! I can remember watching the Honeymooners on a big black and white TV where you had to turn the knobs on it. But it brings back sweet memories. And laughter of a time gone by. But The Honeymooners Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton priceless.
Just learned that a unknown Connie Francis was singing the Hucklebuck in this episode. I never knew this but if you listen to it with Connie in mind, you can hear it really is her.
Hey there, Ralphie boy, what do ya say there, pal o' mine?" "You know, Norton, I been watchin' you. And I know you been watchin' me. You watch me, I know. :) QC
For anyone here who is curious who the singer is, that's none other than Connie Francis, who was only eighteen when she made this recording specifically for this episode of The Honeymooners. This recording was-sadly-never released for purchase by the public.
Yep, That was Real Comedy!! Many of The Great Stand-Up Comedy Acts of Today, Would Watch & Learn The Great Comedic's of Years Past!! The Good Old Days!!
although connie francis' and chubby checker's versions were hits, this version was one recorded specifically for this show. not sure who the singer was, probably a studio musician.
I was waiting for someone to simply say "I have it on good authority." Well, that settles that. How could someone's "claimed" authority without mentioning the claimed authority be argued with? I mean, we could be "told" what that claimed authority is, but how would knowing that help? "Because I said so" solves the mystery. What a relief!
No it's Connie Francis. The most people say it's Kay or Connie from the two. Now Kay's versions she released don't sound like this at all and the voice and personality/emotion of her as a singer is not in this recording on the show. Connie Francis appeared on "Stage Show" (The Gleason-produced companion show to "The Honeymooners") in 1955-1956, and apparently was asked to record this version especially for this episode. As an obsessed fan of Connie's I can tell that it is her. Someone needs to please ask Connie about this to settle it once and for all. If Kay was sped up it wouldn't make sense still when you listen to her Hucklebuck song. I didn't hear about Rosemary Clooney until now. She doesn't sound like that voicewise.
@jett woodwardYou are correct. It is Kay Starr. That is her voice and the instrumental accompaniment is the same as that on her recording. Larry Birnbaum says it is Kay in his book "Before Elvis."
This is how I imagine Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble would look like in real life (they sure do sound like them) which I'm sure The Flintstones are more based of The Honeymooners than the other way around for obvious reasons. Either way I love this version of the song the most, too bad you can't really find it anywhere.
For many of us still kicking, the Honeymooners never gets old.
@UncleMikeNJ I know that kind of hurtin’!
Watching The Honeymooners in 2024 brings back such memories when the world was such a joy to be in looking at it now takes you away from your troubles for a while thank you for showing
The world was not so hot then either.
Jayne Meadows said that her sister Audrey had a poker face from the time she was a little girl.
@robertdiotalevi285 Actually it's a well known fact that The Honeymooners rarely actually rehearsed much at all because Gleason liked the spotananity of comedy and didn't want to lose the energy and steam of fresh jokes or bits.
How any of them managed to keep their faces straight is amazing 😂 what I wouldn’t have given to work with comedic geniuses like them
Riiiight?
Norton dance steps throwing a bowling ball, walking like Charlie Chaplin 😂 absolutely brilliant 👏 👏👏👍👍👍
I've seen this 100x but I just now noticed the bowling ball. Ha! "This is one of those numbers that tells a story!"
After all these years, this still RIPS ME TO PIECES!!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
These two men are as smooth as butter on their feet I love it greatest thing ever
Such simple, innocent and impactful fun. Life will never be the same.
One of my favorite scenes form the Honeymooners!
You know a show is great when 50 Plus years they still show it. Real comedy. These were done live so if they made a mistake they had to improvise.
This stuff still cracks me up like the 1st time I saw it. Timeless comedy
This was way before my time and it's still some of the funniest TV I have ever seen...
I was a small child when it was first broadcast and understood and appreciated the adult buffoonery.
Art Carney was extremely talented. He could do anything.
Absolutely!
Including The Hucklebuck!
Can he core a apple?

I cringe at even the thought of what passes for TV.
War Horse 14269 I was born in 82. So glad PIX bring the reruns when I was a kid. I had to stay home on every New Year’s Day and watch the honeymooners
War Horse 14269 I remember when Jackie Gleason died. Our local Hartford Courant newspaper's cartoonist showed Alice in their apartment, head down and sitting at the kitchen table, crying.
Moving. I loved...no, I LOVE, the HONEYMOONERS.
same here. our whole family knew ALL of these episodes, and quoted them endlessly. now i have no one left to laugh with.
Honeymooners are the best. Trying to get my daughter to watch all the reruns. So far so good.

when the great one says your great.. he meens it.. jackie couldnt do it without art!
Well, Ed Norton has been on multiple greatest tv characters list (along with Ralph) for a reason. :)
My 4-year-old granddaughter, born in 2017, 73 years after this episode aired, laughed hysterically at this scene tonight. Gosh i wish kids today could have great television all the time like the "good ol' days!"
One of my FAVORITE episodes...Art Carney was sooo talented.
unbelievable.... This is BRILLIANT talent... we really have lost some skill in the past 50+ years... wow. these guys were talented
When Alice walks in and confronts Ralph dancing, it's like the opposite of when Ralph walks in and encounters Alice and the other woman all doing the mambo in another episode.

Pulling off this scene with little or no rehearsal is brilliant.
