I made Chief long before they where born, alot has changed,the Navy has changed but not the Chief Petty Officer, he will always be the back bone of the USN, once a Chief always a Chief!! SALUTE!!
Been in for 8 years and it’s my life long dream to be a Chief Petty Officer, I joined because of my father who was a Senior Chief and did 26 years in the Navy.
In the Army, the First Sergeant ran the Rifle Company. The ones I respected the most in any Service were the Warrant Officers. They did the hands on showing you how to do it.
I was a Marine and even though the Marine gunnery sergeant is the same pay grade a a Navy chief there is something unique about the chief. I grew up in a Navy family. My dad, several of his brothers and cousins, and some on my maternal side of the family all were Navy in WWII. My dad made it to petty officer first class and even though it is just one pay grade below chief it could have been light years away. Several others made CPO and one in particular stands out in my mind. He was a chief yeoman and near the end of his career he was THE chief yeoman for Vice Admiral Joy at the Panmunjom armistice talks. At least that is how the family story goes. My cub scout troop got to go aboard a Navy ship in Long Beach. We ate lunch and toured the ship. Very exciting for a bunch of kids. I thought my dad had arranged the tour through his connections as an engineer working on the polaris missile project. Nope, dad called his brother-in-law the chief who at that time was stationed in Long Beach and the chief made it happen with a phone call. Yes, there is something truly special about a US Navy chief petty officer.
Nothing against the Corps where I served but if I knew then what I know now I believe I would have joined the Navy. Thanks for your service and dedication ladies and gentlemen.
The Chief Warrant officers r the Shit! I have been out of the navy 30yrs. Have my own welding business. I had this 4 yr. Hull tech i wanna say was a 3rd or 2nd. Class didn't matter he was smart great attitude good fabricator/welder. One day this retired chief walks in Ok i gave him a shot, fuck bad attitude didn't want to take direction not a good fabricator mediocre welder, so i put him with my other guy whom i made leadman he comes marching into my office gives me 2 weeks notice i said 'heah man u can leave now i was looking for a welder not a chief'

One word describes a Chiefs job. Leadership. We have been there, we have done that, we show how to do it. We lead by example. SMC, USN, Ret.
