i've worn a rainbow bracelet everyday since the day i was born as a religious symbol - when i came out it became a happy combination of two facets of my personality but i don't think we the gays get to claim this one without bringing up religion just because we've commercialised it. I dunno it's hard, religious LGBT folks are kinda dancing around this one feeling hella awkward ngl

Z F Absolutely agree! what is so ridiculous is that it’s not even a horizontal rainbow, they are literally using the flag, our 6 coloured flag, instead of the regular 7 coloured rainbow. Next thing we know they’ll be using our traditional 8 coloured one with the pink and turquoise too! Those colours each have a particular meaning and even if they didn’t the flag is our symbol of celebration, rebellion, and support. Use a rainbow if you want, and do whatever you can to support the NHS but it’s upsetting seeing people who voted Tory not only clapping but hanging up the rainbow flag which represents our shared struggle, pain, love, isolation, pride, history... you know? @B R yes a rainbow is a general symbol. A standard rainbow is 7 colours. The LGBTQ+ flag is 6 colours and this is what is being used, not just a normal rainbow

To be fair my colleagues in the NHS also agree with this and it gets mentioned alot. However it came about originally from the whole ‘kids painting rainbow pictures to put in their windows’ so rainbows became associated with the lockdown, key workers, hope etc.

To be fair the NHS didn’t actually take it, some idiot members of the public decided to leap from the cute thing of kids drawing actual rainbows on posters to just using the LGBT flag. Not sure how that happened tbh but not something the NHS did themselves. I literally couldn’t agree more. A massively historic, sentimental and most importantly STILL RELEVANT symbol has been misappropriated by a irrefutably homophobic government. YES for a fantastic cause of course but for the rainbow to suddenly have so much respect attributed to it from people who’ve historically been highly disrespectful to us as a community is actually a bit heartbreaking. Also, I see using the rainbow and not the actual nhs symbol an excuse to make that respect temporary. Not loading the actual logo with that importance may excuse the government from actually paying them an acceptable wage in the future. Just thoughts.

Ok yeah I draw the line at the actual flag. A drawing of a rainbow, like the big semi circle curvy boy, is one thing, the colours OF the rainbow is one thing, but co opting the pride flag itself is so damn disrespectful. You dont just get to recycle the pride flag to mean something else entirely
This makes sense. I agree with this. Maybe because I’m from the US where everyone uses the rainbow for a myriad of causes, I was like what’s the big deal, but no one claims the actual rainbow flag. They make their own rainbow 🌈 symbolism. I get the frustration now.

Make it verticle or rearrange the colours, like many country flags have similarities in colours scheme, arrangement of stars and crosses but they still are made to look unique so tht only their country is represented, nhs can obviously have the exact rainbow theme but they shld have made it unique to their organisation instead of co opting the exact design of the pride flag

i like to watch videos Maybe it doesn’t hold any strong meaning for you but for a lot of people it’s a symbol of years of fighting for rights and acceptance and using that exact symbol for something unrelated is appropriation and erasure of the community. Plus it’s not that hard to make a new symbol the nhs literally already have a logo people could use
I understand the erasure or appropriation issue, but I also think a silver lining to it all is that it could desensitize those who normally react to the pride flag with anger or disgust. If it becomes more common and doesn't have a clear association for one specific thing, then there may be less instances of "well that's gay so I will lash out" because they simply won't know unless there is a further identifier along with it.

Honestly I feel the same about the NHS thing. Literally thought everyone was coming out when I saw it, then when I realised what it was I was a little disappointed and annoyed. Saying “No one owns a rainbow” is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Does that mean I can just make a company and call it “KFC” with the reasoning “oh, but no one owns the letters K, F and C”.
The rainbow flag can not be trademarked for the obvious reason it was around before pride, maybe if they jumbled the colours up in a specific order to make it truly unique, but currently it's just too generic and used in many areas unrelated to pride.

Really appreciate you sharing your opinion on this! From both the LGBT community and the NHS's perspective it seems a baffling choice. Having the community's symbol reclaimed, including by anti-LGBT people, kinda seems to be trampling over its history and the safety it's meant to indicate. As for the NHS, I have so much love and respect for NHS workers including those I know in my life, and to me it'd be much more logical, like you said, to hang out the NHS symbol and colours. If this is about showing respect and love for them, why can't we show that directly to them and their symbol and colours? I can't help but feel like anti-LGBT rhetorics are on the rise and, like you've also said, that people have issues with feeling like the rainbow flag is always being "shoved in their face" (and similar disparaging lines of thinking etc.). Having the pride flag being spread so widely as it is at the moment seems like it's probably gonna antagonise both LGBT and anti-LGBT people, and it's something that could so easily have been avoided. Doesn't sit right with me. The public actually decided to start putting up the flags themselves. Originally it was just a rainbow symbol and kids were drawing posters with a rainbow (not the flag) and putting them up as kind of “rainbow after the storm” kind of sentiment. Then some dumb fucks decided to use the flag instead. The NHS themselves had nothing to do with the flag use.

i’m closeted and because i live in a small town, i haven’t seen many other lgbtq+ people out and about, so when i saw the rainbows when i was going for a walk they made me feel so much less alone and i was shocked at how many people were like me. needless to say when i found out the flags didn’t mean what i thought they did, i was very disappointed.

I think Biphobia can also come from a place where we are constantly told that it's a phase or you just haven't found the right man. It's the assumption that being with a woman is somehow less than than being with a man. We get this trope in movies, tv shows etc. where a bisexual character has a fling with a woman but ends up with a man. I think some people get bitter when that harmful thought gets confirmed by bisexuals falling in love with the opposite sex. What you don't get is that you're angry at the wrong person! It sucks that because of societal homophobic assumptions that we turn on each other. Love is beautiful and we should fight together to end these stupid assumptions.
I legit just had a discussion on Facebook about the rainbow flag. This (very straight) man said that to me that we have to stop saying that people fought and died for that flag, as we are overreacting and it's just a "piece of cloth". I was very confused when I started seeing the rainbows everywhere. How did this actually start anyway? I completely agree, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Especially since the area I live in is an extremely safe conservative hold. They've had landslide victories here for over 20 years and I've never felt particularly accepted. And now everyone is waving rainbow flags and clapping every Thursday. It's all for show. If they really valued the NHS, they should have supported it with their vote.
Literally someone on my street started flying the pride flag as a rainbow for the NHS and I kept quiet because I was afraid my family would think I was being unsupportive, but it genuinely made me feel uneasy. The pride flag holds so much meaning for our community and when I see it places it makes me feel supported and like I can proudly be who I am. Now that meaning is being taken away. I literally couldn’t agree more. A massively historic, sentimental and most importantly STILL RELEVANT symbol has been misappropriated by a irrefutably homophobic government. YES for a fantastic cause of course but for the rainbow to suddenly have so much respect attributed to it from people who’ve historically been highly disrespectful to us as a community is actually a bit heartbreaking. Also, I see using the rainbow and not the actual nhs symbol an excuse to make that respect temporary. Not loading the actual logo with that importance may excuse the government from actually paying them an acceptable wage in the future. Just thoughts.

Make it verticle or rearrange the colours, like many country flags have similarities in colours scheme, arrangement of stars and crosses but they still are made to look unique so tht only their country is represented, nhs can obviously have the exact rainbow theme but they shld have made it unique to their organisation instead of co opting the exact design of the pride flag

i like to watch videos Maybe it doesn’t hold any strong meaning for you but for a lot of people it’s a symbol of years of fighting for rights and acceptance and using that exact symbol for something unrelated is appropriation and erasure of the community. Plus it’s not that hard to make a new symbol the nhs literally already have a logo people could use
I understand the erasure or appropriation issue, but I also think a silver lining to it all is that it could desensitize those who normally react to the pride flag with anger or disgust. If it becomes more common and doesn't have a clear association for one specific thing, then there may be less instances of "well that's gay so I will lash out" because they simply won't know unless there is a further identifier along with it.

The rainbow flag can not be trademarked for the obvious reason it was around before pride, maybe if they jumbled the colours up in a specific order to make it truly unique, but currently it's just too generic and used in many areas unrelated to pride.

Really appreciate you sharing your opinion on this! From both the LGBT community and the NHS's perspective it seems a baffling choice. Having the community's symbol reclaimed, including by anti-LGBT people, kinda seems to be trampling over its history and the safety it's meant to indicate. As for the NHS, I have so much love and respect for NHS workers including those I know in my life, and to me it'd be much more logical, like you said, to hang out the NHS symbol and colours. If this is about showing respect and love for them, why can't we show that directly to them and their symbol and colours?
I can't help but feel like anti-LGBT rhetorics are on the rise and, like you've also said, that people have issues with feeling like the rainbow flag is always being "shoved in their face" (and similar disparaging lines of thinking etc.). Having the pride flag being spread so widely as it is at the moment seems like it's probably gonna antagonise both LGBT and anti-LGBT people, and it's something that could so easily have been avoided. Doesn't sit right with me. Honestly wouldn't be surprised once all this is over if people start complaining and claiming that it was being used as a symbol for the NHS to push left wing agenda, which is simply not true.

The public actually decided to start putting up the flags themselves. Originally it was just a rainbow symbol and kids were drawing posters with a rainbow (not the flag) and putting them up as kind of “rainbow after the storm” kind of sentiment. Then some dumb fucks decided to use the flag instead. The NHS themselves had nothing to do with the flag use.

Ughh it should have been my local pride today, so I hung out my pride flag this morning to show solidarity since we cant have our celebration. A dog walker asked me if someone in the family was an NHS worker, to which I told them my reasons. He seemed shocked at the fact that I could have a rainbow flag that could represent something other than NHS. It really annoyed me because haven't we always associated a six colour rainbow flag with LGBT+ pride. Like I see a rainbow and I'm like...gay
Also I heard people saying that the peace flag is also rainbow, which is true BUT the peace flag has 7 stripes and the colors and in a different order and from what I see Y'ALL BE HANGING PRIDE FLAGS NOT PEACE FLAGS

i’m closeted and because i live in a small town, i haven’t seen many other lgbtq+ people out and about, so when i saw the rainbows when i was going for a walk they made me feel so much less alone and i was shocked at how many people were like me. needless to say when i found out the flags didn’t mean what i thought they did, i was very disappointed.

I think Biphobia can also come from a place where we are constantly told that it's a phase or you just haven't found the right man. It's the assumption that being with a woman is somehow less than than being with a man. We get this trope in movies, tv shows etc. where a bisexual character has a fling with a woman but ends up with a man. I think some people get bitter when that harmful thought gets confirmed by bisexuals falling in love with the opposite sex. What you don't get is that you're angry at the wrong person! It sucks that because of societal homophobic assumptions that we turn on each other. Love is beautiful and we should fight together to end these stupid assumptions.
I legit just had a discussion on Facebook about the rainbow flag. This (very straight) man said that to me that we have to stop saying that people fought and died for that flag, as we are overreacting and it's just a "piece of cloth". I was very confused when I started seeing the rainbows everywhere. How did this actually start anyway? I completely agree, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Especially since the area I live in is an extremely safe conservative hold. They've had landslide victories here for over 20 years and I've never felt particularly accepted. And now everyone is waving rainbow flags and clapping every Thursday. It's all for show. If they really valued the NHS, they should have supported it with their vote.

Literally someone on my street started flying the pride flag as a rainbow for the NHS and I kept quiet because I was afraid my family would think I was being unsupportive, but it genuinely made me feel uneasy. The pride flag holds so much meaning for our community and when I see it places it makes me feel supported and like I can proudly be who I am. Now that meaning is being taken away.
