The key thing to remember is that a 10 point increase in cultivation translates to a 2% buff increase (assuming your general's total stats are all over 900). So, in this example, John Hunyadi's attack buff increased about 10% and defence and hp increased about 4%. Whether that's worth the extra gems spent cultivating is up to the player.
For reference, completing John's siege machine ares specialty costs 254K gems (and 12,700 glory rune stones) for 10% siege attack, defence and hp. That said, there are the usual diminishing returns as you push for higher and higher buffs.

yes but people also paying 2k for 20% duty general buffs..so relatively speaking couple million gems to add 5-20% to all your pvp gens is a good deal.

Not worth over a million gems in my opinion, I got all of them around 530 in one hit, 12,400 gems in total.
