Is there a sucessful game that's used this method of modelling? It seems to be quite a popular concept right now, and I'm wondering if there was a "patient zero", like when Minecraft appeared and everyone wanted to make everything from cubes for a while.
You have a list of new games that are like this (and I don't mean the sort of low poly that has limited textures like you see on asset stores)? There have been low fidelity type indie games since the 2000s so I'm wondering what you have in mind exactly. I do know there have been some low-fi retro fps recently.
@@d3v1lsummoner I'm not just talking about low-poly games, I specifically mean a game where the assets are constructed from 3D tilesets like this method of construction provides. It has very well defined behaviour and constraints, so it shouldn't be too hard to spot in the wild, but I can't say I've ever seen it. I was wondering if there was a specific game that championed and popularised this exact method (not just the low-poly method that's as old as 3D gaming itself).
@@superscatboy I think there's a 3D JRPG engine that does environment tiles but I don't find it much. I guess I'd have to see what you're talking about. When I think of Crocotile and Sprytile I think more of using it for ps1 Megaman Legends-esque texturing.
Back during the original Playstation era there was a lot of 3D games with content that could have easily been assembled using something like Crocotile or this. I doubt any of them actually did this workflow before, as I think Croctile might have been the first to put out such an editor, but it probably wasn't too far off. I've been ripping map tiles from the original Mega Man Legends game for a while now, and I'm been more than a little tempted to mess around with remaking them in Crocotile, but I've been using Blender so long now, I can definitely do things quicker in that (even without Sprytile), so it's hard to switch, even though the desire is constantly there because it seems like such a good fit, heh. They basically used a grid based map layout with tiles that had sides that are multiples of the default grid unit length. The tiles are rather low poly and mostly just a small handful of planes with sub-textures from an atlas applied to them. One thing you will run into these days though, is that most engines don't like cleanly rendering mipmaps for texture atlases, I know Godot in particular makes a huge mess of them (even with precise hand made mipmaps in a .dds). Unreal is about the only one I've come across examples that worked, but even then it took a fair bit of shader black magic to pull it off, and you are stuck with the massive overhead of the unreal editor, which feels like using a tank to hunt for squirrels when it comes to making low poly retro style games.
hello, im working with this addon for some time and i still havent figerd out how to create mesh collider in unity without using solidify. Solidify messes with full geometry and create clipping on edges. Does anybody know how to create efficient colliders in unty from this addon? Thanks
If they get the code a little less crashy, might make a nice quick tool to make random machinery/sci-fi ship parts or rooms, with creative use of textures arranged in a tilemap. If nothing else, to quick prototype an idea before you take the time to detail model it. Anyone looked at the code for possible reasons of crashes?

this is not working on any blender version i have tried.
I'm a little sad this appears to only be for on-axis cube-like editing. With the preview picture of the house, I was hoping that it could also store 3d building blocks like the slanted roof+staircase, so that you could build geometries from 1x1x1 cube "tiles". This is still pretty neat, though.
