I thought that was a very good series as an introduction to polyrythms, well explained with clear examples, and a touch of comedy thrown in here and there. Deserves more views.
Great video man. Wish this was the first one I hit to learn, all the info I wanted was right here lol. That being said, I have what may be a dumb question, but for something to be considered a polyrhythm, does there need to be two independent phrases? I guess what I mean is can I alter my strumming pattern to match the timing and just apply the timing as a whole on my guitar?
Seeing as how playing a simple 8th note triplet is considered a polyrhythm when you're in a 4/4 time signature, I'd say there doesn't NEED to be two independent phrases. I've heard several examples posted online involving drums, or hand drums, and they are said to be playing polyrhythms on just the one instrument. That does include just playing on a single hand drum. So, if you can play a polyrhythm on a single drum head, then I don't see why you can't do the same on guitar! When I studied this stuff to put these lessons together, it seemed to me like a lot of polyrhythmic stuff just doesn't sound like polyrhythms to me. Most of this stuff flows so well and can easily be noted without the use of a triplet bracket or quintuple bracket. Well, EASILY is relative person to person I suppose.
If you're spacing out 7 beats across 2 beats, you'd have 4 of the 7 beats occur during the 1st beat of the 2 beats you're spacing things across, then the last 3 beats happen next. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 1 2 Hopefully that text example looks okay after I post this comment. Basically the 2 beat of the lower number of beats needs to come directly in between beats 4 and 5 of the higher number of beats.

It's weird that you consider 5:3 to be harder than 5:4.other than playing with 5s, I think 5:3 is way more intuitive, or anything on 3 for that matter. Make it swing, baby!
