  • In the early 60s and 70s when the TV was still the rich man’s luxury, the upper-middle-class boasted of owning the much affordable and accessible Murphy Radio.
Murphy Radio which was a British company was founded in 1929 by Frank Murphy and E.J Power. The company also manufactured sets for the British armed forces during World War II but their main aim was to manufacture homely electronic gadgets.
The founder left the company in 1937 to establish the FM radio (Frank Murphy Radio). The original name Murphy stayed. The brand debuted in India in the year 1948 and the nation fell in love with it and the chubby-cheeked, inquisitive-looking baby with fingers placed on his lips.
The Murphy brand still survives in India and belongs to the Mumbai-based Shirodkar group of companies. The company no more deals with Murphy Radio however these days they sell Murphy home theatres television DVD players.
The vintage radio Murphy is still available on online sites such as Amazon for connoisseurs and collectors.
