This is a well-made tutorial--thanks for taking the time to share what you've learned. I used a steel rule not because I'm a perfectionist but because I'm a little cautious and I didn't want to damage the dust jacket accidentally as I was learning. Felt better about making the last crease with the dust jacket inside the mylar cover by lining up the steel rule on the edge of the dust jacket to protect it.
Thank you! This was the first video recommended to me based on a search of "Using Brodart book cover instructions", and you gave me all the information I needed and wanted. Greatly appreciated! 👍
Super helpful! Just got back into reading and collecting hardcover books, but I'm heavy-handed with everything. Brodart is expensive, so I wanted to make sure I used it properly. Thanks, man!
@elliebellie7816 I haven’t tried others. This is the first that I tried, and I’ve liked it a lot. I did start buying much larger roles, which is cheaper and far more convenient.
I am just starting a collection of hardcover books by a few favorite authors. It dawned on me to cover the dust jackets. And I found your awesome video! Thank you so much for showing the installation process of this product. You're amazing!
Thank you Sheryl! I sure do appreciate it. Enjoy your hardcover collecting. Your story sounds exactly like mine in about 2002. I started collecting hardcover books of a few of my favorite authors. Spoiler alert. It usually grows far beyond those parameters.😁
Thanks for doing this video. I’ve been wanting to get into covering my dust jackets for a long while but was intimidated by all the sizing options etc. I had always looked at the pre-cut sheets. Seems maybe the rolls are the way to go.
Didn’t get a roll but ordered 10 precut ones. I do believe this is my weekend project. Now just gotta decide between which books to practice on before accidentally messing up one I’ll hate myself for 😂 thanks for the walkthrough!
Best of luck! The most difficult part is getting the dust jacket all the way up into the crease of the Brodart. If you don’t get it all the. Way in, you’ll have a little white strip showing above your dust jacket.
Thank you! I have a brand new book with a dust jacket that was unfortunately damaged in shipping. Got it from Amazon. The book is super heavy, so I don't think I will send it back ... anyway, it is a Ulysses book and the book itself is actually 12 1/4" tall! So I don't know if the 12" mylar will work for my purposes. My goal is to prevent any further damage to the dust jacket. Your method is good enough for me! I am not a perfectionist about the mylar. But I am a perfectionist about dust jackets--I prefer them to be perfect on a brand new book lol 😅 so it bothers me a bit that my dust jacket isn't perfect. 😅 I am hopeful that the mylar will, at least, keep it in the condition it is in currently and not make it any worse. Thank you so much for making this easy to follow!
Thank you for this video! I have wondered for years what kind of product the dust jacket was covered in on one of the books I bought from the United States.
Great video! When you fold the edge of the paper backing and you said you don’t want it too short, did you mean having the white backing too far under the dust jacket, or the dust jacket too far above where the paper backing ends? Obviously you never want the white paper lining to show on the exterior of the book, but I’m curious what is the advantage to making the paper backing exact? Like, is it a big deal to have the paper backing end 1-2 inches from the top of the dust jacket? That way, it definitely won’t show, and you don’t have to worry about getting it exact. Unless I’m missing something and there’s a downside to having a gap there.
Thank you! 👍 If you fold the paper up “too much”, it will still look fine. I prefer to be just past the dust jacket because it feels like that paper adds a little more rigidity to the dust jacket, possibly making the dust jacket less likely to wear over time when taking the book off the shelf or removing the book from a slipcase.
Instructions not clear - I accidentally applied the mylar to my face. All jokes aside, awesome stuff! Now time to go buy some and start protecting my books! Thank you!
Thanks for the informative and entertaining video! I need to put protectors on some books that have dust jackets that are nearly 100 years old, and while they aren’t brittle, they are a bit on the thin side. My concern is folding the last bit of plastic over the small bit of dust jacket sticking out without damaging it. Any advice besides just being extra careful? Is that what people were talking about with using a metal straightedge? Thanks again.
This looks great! When I read/hold a book with dust jacket, quite often the book itself slides (half way) out of the jacket. So, in the end do you have to apply some tapes to prevent the sliding?
No. I don’t use any tape. The Brodart Justafold III that I use has a paper back, so it has more friction and helps to keep the dust jacket on the book. I actually dropped a book once because the dust jacket slid off in my hands (just like you described).
Here is one option. I use the 10 inch on most books. www.shopbrodart.com/Library-Supplies/Book-Jacket-Covers/Archival-Covers/Just-A-Fold-III/Just-A-Fold-III-Rolls/_/Brodart-Just-A-Fold-III-Archival-Book-Jacket-Covers/
Sure. The small books require folding more material over at the bottom (or buying shorter Brodart). The taller books may require taller Brodart rolls or sleeves depending on the height. I use 10” for most, and 12” for a few.
Just came across your video and is extremely helpful as I'm about to embark on protecting my complete Stephen King collection. One question before I order my roll, do you prefer the glossy finish or matte? I feel like glossy will reflect too much in my room (a few windows) and also the older editions dont have much colour that needs to pop. Thanks again!
Thank you. I have always used glossy, and haven’t seen matte in person. If it’s perfectly see through, but not reflective, matte would be great. I’d try to get a sample (or just one) to see what matte looks like in person before buying a large quantity though.
@@itsterrific Ironic you saying that as Brodart is now shipping me a 6 sample pack of different versions and different finishes. I'll let you know how it looks before I commit to covering my 100+ SK novels 👍
@kidcarter0 Update is.......stay away from Brodart! What started as their website being down TEMPORARILY turned into it STILL being down months later. I placed an order over the phone with a credit card which ended up never arriving and multiple phone calls later they couldn't even find my order. The company doesn't know what the hell is even going on and won't give an answer. Either got hacked or slowly going out of business. Steer clear!!!!
www.shopbrodart.com/Library-Supplies/Book-Jacket-Covers/Archival-Covers/Just-A-Fold-III/Just-A-Fold-III-Rolls/_/Brodart-Just-A-Fold-III-Archival-Book-Jacket-Covers/ This is the last order that I made. The roll is a lot bigger, but it’s a much better price per foot than the smaller rolls.
Thank you for the useful video, this helped me find the right product I was looking for. A bit difficult to find here in Canada, but I found some reasonably priced ones online! I'm excited to add an extra layer of protection to my dust jackets, as I usually remove them out of fear that they'll get damaged.
Thought I might want to do this with my books, but it would feel like I was reading a library book. The nice thing about actually owning the book is you get to feel the dust jacket. Some are sleek, matte, have raised lettering etc. and it's nice to be able to feel it. I just take it off while I read it and then put it back on after I'm done. Plus my books go long periods of time before I get around to even re-reading them since I have an endless amount of things that I want to read. Good instructional video though.
@Dynoids I definitely think that old brittle thin paper dust jackets need Brodart protectors. Great point! It stops the damage now, so it won’t get worse.
I buy stuff from Amazon when I can't find it elsewhere. Sometimes pay a bit more, hoping to keep more profit in the hands of the manufacturer. This tactic prompted Jeff Bezos to drop me from his Christmas card list ... oh, well ...

Finally a tutorial that isn't super complicated! And thank you for sharing what materials you use so I can recreate it on my books 👏😄

Thanks Jason. I like the flexibility of the rolls.
Thanks for sharing Tim! Have been wondering about how you protect your books. Now off to Amazon.
Thank you! I see people online mentioning “messing up” and quitting, or being scared to try. I mainly wanted to show how simple it can be.
Thanks for sharing, great video
I need to start protecting my library and now I have the tools to get her done.
Thanks Squints. I wrap all of my dust jackets.

BTW, I love your user name.👍
Great video - just curious why you dont tape it. Seems like it would just flop out once you open the book to read.
Thanks John.👍 I don’t ever tape it. The folding holds it pretty good right away, and after sitting on the shelf for a while, it really takes a set.
Thank you for this video! I have wondered for years what kind of product the dust jacket was covered in on one of the books I bought from the United States.
My pleasure! Some people do not like the shininess of the cover, but I want to make sure my dust jackets are protected.

Most quality protectors are face safe and in some regions, the look is very popular. 😁

My concern is folding the last bit of plastic over the small bit of dust jacket sticking out without damaging it. Any advice besides just being extra careful? I just do it very carefully, but that is where using a straight edge can help make the crease.
This looks great! When I read/hold a book with dust jacket, quite often the book itself slides (half way) out of the jacket. So, in the end do you have to apply some tapes to prevent the sliding?

This was a helpful video. I usually use the centerfold ones but may consider trying these out in the future. What do you utilize for naked hardbacks?
I don’t cover my hardcovers that do not have dust jackets. Not that I’m against it, it’s just not as easy to get the right height.
You rock! Thanks Tim!
Thank you Mark! 🤟
Thankyou for this! 👍🏼
The pleasure is all mine, Giles. Thank you!
Nice job!
Thanks Jett!

Put some tape to hold the inside folds to prevent the cover from slipping around.
That would work.

Can you do dust jackets for hard cover books both small and tall books. Thanks
Sure. The small books require folding more material over at the bottom (or buying shorter Brodart). The taller books may require taller Brodart rolls or sleeves depending on the height. I use 10” for most, and 12” for a few.
Do you read with the jacket and jacket cover on the book?
No. If I am reading a hardcover, I take the jacket off while I an reading. Of course I save the jacket to put back on when I shelve the book later.
I use a steel rule, exacto knife and bone folder...still not a perfect job. Yours look good too :)
You’re right. I don’t seek true perfection, I’m just wrapping dust jackets. 😁

Thanks man. I don't need a ruler.
A ruler may help, but I just use my hands. I keep it simple, and the results are good enough fir my taste. 😁
Do you use lo luster or super clear?
I’ve never tried the low luster, but I may buy a few just to see how they look.
Do you suggest the Just-a-fold I, II, or III?
I use the Just-A-Fold III. I’m not suggesting it, that’s just what I prefer. I have now started buying bigger roles because I don’t like reordering. 😁
I’d love to know how to remove one safely.
Good idea. It’s simple but it may not be obvious. Thanks. I’ll make one of those too.
Stephen Root teaches us about dust jacket covers :)
“If they take my stapler, then I’ll set the building on fire.”
Wait, how does the plastic stick together?
It’s folded over the dust jacket, creased then closed with the book. It quickly takes a set. No tape or glue.
