    Scotty; that was one of the best descriptions of how air conditioning system works. Most people make it sound a lot more complicated.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, with the electronic crap they have in cars now, it can be quite complicated actually. Not in the actual working of how an AC system works, but all the electronic sensors, solenoids, blend door vacuum system or electronic actuated blend doors, all sorts of crap in these new cars to fail, even the controls in the dash fail. Simple rotary knobs worked fine LOL, all that electronic push button dual or quad zone climate control crap is what's gonna cost you lots of $$$$$ when those systems fail. Some systems use vacuum pressure to operate the blend and vent doors some use electric motors, some use a combination of both, and none are easy to get to and often requires tearing your dash apart to get to them to even see what's wrong. I like my old vehicles that just have a couple of easily accessible cables LOL.

    Scotty, this A/C video is great. As vehicles become more and more complicated by electronics and the requirement of specialized tools, it’s good to have folks like you to simplify what otherwise could seem complicated and overwhelming. Thanks. I do, however, have a question regarding your insistence on having a strong battery to ensure peak A/C performance. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall you stating in one of your other videos that, once the engine is running, all electricity needed then comes from the alternator, not the battery. I also believe that the alternator charges the battery. Right?

  • @Bobbybeb

    the refrigerant goes into the evaporator via a metering device ( it regulates how much goes in). the refrigerant is in a liquid form into the evaporator where it boils off (like boiling water turns to steam) and absorbs heat around the coils from moving air. it is sucked into the compressor and compressed into high temp high pressure vapor and pushed into the condensing coil (in front of radiator) where it cooled back into a liquid to start all over again..

    To add to the AC radiator part... Bought my '99 Tahoe in '03 and the AC rad and coolant rad had a lot of bugs, dirt and small stones embedded with a lot of the fins bent. I took a piece of welding wire and bent each end into a different hooking pattern then hammered them flat and taped a piece of vacuum line over the mid section of the wire for a handle grip. I laboriously, over multiple days, picked out all the crud while straightening up the fins as I went. I now have a 1/8th inch square holes screen over the grill which catches the larger materials while allowing air flow. This vehicle also has an add on transmission radiator mounted over the lower right passenger side Ac rad. area which would be extra cooling when trailering.
    I never pulled that until last year when I wanted to see what was behind it. To get to the trans radiator requires pulling the grill which was fairly easy to do. The space that little rad covers was caked with dirt and sand which I was only too happy to remove. I now have a standard piece of window size screen attached over the trans rad section of the outer screen. I am a fan of using the lye based spray cleaners and a hose for finish up cleaning. The lye is good for dissolving organic matter as well as cleaning in general.

Clean out all the dust dirt and bugs that collected in the fins of the radiator... The car is used to run much cooler...

    This is very healful. I tried 2 fix my AC a couple of times however after the last 2 mechanics told me There was an escape on the evaporation system which will cost me over +$1,000 I decided 2 leave it alone. Funny how when there's cool weather in turn the AC and blows cool air, not cold but cool but when it's hot and I turn it in instantly it blows hot air. My heater works very well and good cause sometimes it gets cold down here in the South.

    The AC Pro system works very well. My AC was cutting out in temperatures above 80 degrees. I had it serviced and unknown to me the shop that serviced my AC added too much refrigerant. The AC Pro system has a V shaped gauge that is adjusted to the outside temperature. It was in the red zone and showed me that I had too much refrigerant in the system. I released enough refrigerant to get the needle to fall into the green zone and my AC works perfect now.

  • @liyo4950
    @liyo4950 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Took my car to AAA Auto Repair Center on Tully Rd in San Jose to repair the air conditioning. They told me that the compressor was bad (which I had already figured out since it had a frozen clutch..couldn't push it in by hand while engine was off). I know compressors cost about $300 but they were going to charge me over $1500 to replace it. Then, later, they called me and said they would have to also replace the receiver drier and that would cost another $400 or so. So, after I went back to pick up the car, I looked under the hood and saw a nice shiny new compressor but couldn't see the receiver drier until I got home. Turns out that the receiver drier is like welded to the side of the condenser and has a plug on the bottom that needs to be removed in order to insert a cloth-like cylindrical shaped tampon-looking "drier" that takes moisture out of the system. That's all they did...and they charged me over $1900. The drier "tampon" can be bought at auto stores for from $15 to $35. And the compressor can be bought for about $300. My car is a 2014 Hyundai Tucson. Once you take off the splash panel under engine of the car and look up at the bottom of the "condenser", on the driver's side of the vehicle, you can see and access the "receiver drier" plug to remove to insert the "tampon". I couldn't drain the coolant into a collector before removing those parts so I had to have all this work done by "professionals". Funny, not, how the government will fine you big bucks if you let the coolant escape which helps contribute to global warming but they have no problem sabotaging gas pipelines like the Nordstream pipeline which belched tons of gas into the atmosphere for many days! It's no wonder we are having high, record, temperatures. Wars don't help either. Same thing happened after WWI and WWII..record high temperatures worldwide! Thanks a lot Putin...you son of a b...!!! Putin needs a "b" to the head!!!

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can buy them and add them yourself if you have the tools to do it. I did that in my 88 Ford Bronco 2 when I repaired the AC last summer, although those little inspection windows don't really tell you anything of use, other than if you do or don't have any refrigerant. You need a gauge set to actually test an AC unit.

    I own a 2006 Mazda 6i and it has fewer than 53,000 miles on it that had bought it brand new. Well a few months ago as summer of 2017 was coming to an end, I noticed my A/C wasn't cooling as before. It was also taking a lot longer to cool once it got going. Well two months ago, I bought a can of Freon/collant and a hose, and with the help of a more experienced friend I got the coolant in correctly. The A/C blows cold as hell now on the lowest setting (setting 1)!!! So glad it wasn't a problem with the compressor, that was obvious right off as the compressor would kick on. That can gold got as hell as it was filling the system. haha

    My mother's Ford Explorer from 2005 or so (about 13 years old) has always had some pretty awful air conditioning, (due to the design where the vents connected by a leaky duct instead of an air tight duct), so last summer, I suggested she replace the Refrigerant, we got some "AC PRO" from the store and gauge on can said it was in the red labeled "Low", and so I replaced it, and the air was NOTICEABLY colder, and the car would cool down MUCH faster, later on, after I saw my father replace the cabin air filter, I asked if the one in my mothers car had be replaced, and he said something like "No, I don't think it has." *SO NOW, I plan to:* Check if the fans behind the radiator are BOTH working, clean the radiator and condenser, replace/clean the cabin air filter, and run hoses through the ducting so the vents have an air tight connection. THANKS FOR THE TIPS! :)

    The only time the hot air in the vehicle is pulled into the cooling system and recirculated is IF that vehicle has that option. Most older vehicles (at least 2001 and earlier) don't have this, so ambient air is cooled and blown into the cabin.

    The phase change of the refrigerant going from a liquid to a gas takes heat out of the surrounding area, which lowers the temperature of the surrounding area. The gas is then compressed back into a liquid by the compressor, then around we go again. All ac's use this model.

      Han Skinslo maybe new compressors

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably leaks at the connections, those dang o-rings were prone to failures causing leaks. So the whole system needs taken apart, new o-rings installed, leak tested, and recharged.
      I repaired the AC in my 88 Ford Bronco 2 last year for about $500 that included a new compressor, accumulator, o-rings, refrigerant, and the tools needed. About 1/3 the cost of paying a shop to do a 1/2 ass job. Pretty easy to do, time consuming and requires some tools you probably don't have but once you buy the tools you've got them for future needs too. Vacuum pump, AC Manifold gauge set, and refrigerant were the main things I had to buy but I have the tools and some extra refrigerant for future use if needed. So far so good on the AC repair on my Bronco 2. Just needed new o-rings and a new compressor.

    • @BRBingeDrinker
      @BRBingeDrinker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Todd Wait, wouldn't your 88 need the old type of refrigerant?

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Extremely easy to convert it to R134A, just requires swapping out the service ports, vacuuming down the system flushing the system to get all the old R12 out and the old refrigeration oil out and put new oil in compatible with the R134A, then leak testing the system and recharging.
      Since mine needed a new compressor flushing the system and replacing the refrigeration oil was even easier, plus I had all the pressure lines out as I replaced all the o-rings, put a new accumulator in and flushed out the condenser and evaporator, put everything back together, tested the system for leaks with the vacuum pump, then simply recharged the system to factory specifications. Took a couple hours start to finish, once I got all the parts I needed.

      Well the junkyard can be an option. But sometimes junk is all there is. You can buy a repairkit for the compressor if its available as an alternative.
