- Learn about the permanent resident card (PR card), the official proof of immigration status for all permanent residents of Canada. Permanent residents should apply for a new card six months before their card will expire. If you plan to travel outside the country and return to Canada on a commercial vehicle like a train or airplane, you must have a valid PR card.

kninez Well I had criminal offenses from my younger years i am 36 now so staying out of trouble was a big plus for me in the eyes of Canada. I am a U.S. citizen so once I enter Canada I will apply for my PR which after applying only takes 78 days to receive it. You need to take a English Language assessment test which costs roughly $400 and the PR card is $500 for the application and $400 for filing then you also need a Immigration Physical which costs approximately $270.00 depending on where you live.
kninez I also hired a reputable Immigratiom firm to advise me and guide me along while I did all of my paperwork, they legally cannot do it for you it has to be performed by you. But for peace of mind I hired them to ensure I was doing everything correct.

The date on your card is actually the month and year it expires!

Canada has only one PR card type. No special cards for the refugees.

It is if your a PR though, you just renew the card. You don't have to become a Canadian Citizen if you don't want to.
