Christchurch Earthquake 6.3 Aftershock 13 June 2011: the 5.7 quake about 80 minutes earlier was more destructive, breaking some crockery and throwing the big TV onto the floor.
That was a big one wasn't it? I was in town for all of them today, lots of very calm people and lots of smiles, laughter and people helping others. Good ol' kiwi spirit, love it! Glad you're ok man!
@Mellue1 Learned from a recent Japan Doco that the first quake wave is a fast, pressure-wave (P-wave: 6km/s) and you can hear it hitting at 9secs into the vid: it's like a truck bumping into the house - a sharp jolt - and your ears 'feel' it. The second shock-wave (S-wave), is slower (3km/s) and arrives here about 2secs later and does all the violent shaking, followed by wobbling. So you can tell when a big one is coming, from the initial jolt/pressure change.
this was two days before my bday... the september one was on my nanas, the december was on my cousins and the feb one was on my mums... usual family curse xD Dx

I was on my bike cycling past sign of the Takahe during the first one. Got home to my wife who's face was white! Made the comment "must have been a mag four" she just about killed me...minutes later that one hit. It was like our house was hit by a train. Still hard to process it all.
Thanks Greg: it was certainly a very challenging two-to-four years of bombardment back then. Thankfully things have settled down to just the occasional bump-in-the-night.
You did the right thing going under the desk. I wish more people had that as their immediate reaction instead of running outside. That's how a lot of people get hurt. Then again, I understand how you guys have had a lot of practice by now with all the aftershocks. I hope things settle down for a good long while after this. I know everyone's nerves have gone beyond frayed at this point.
@lemurkat That's actualy the first time I've had the presence of mind to duck under anything! For most previous big shakes I've either been in bed, or in the garden or out in the boat fishing. The 5.6 about an hour earlier broke my wine glasses and crockery, so I was expecting things to start crashing and smashing during this one.
@TheGumball123 I agree, there wasn't really a bang it was more just WAMMO I'm HERE and shook like no body's business pretty much vertical like you'd shake a can if you wanted it to burst. Still, as scary as it was.... it was the aftermath that was the frightening part....in terms of actual earthquakes the September one still makes my heart lurch just thinking about the prospect of experiencing that again. But we're likely to at some point in the future damn it stupid alpine fault.

I no longer live in chch due to the eqs but at the 9s mark the bang. before it hits anynoise i hear car doors ect still make me jump allmost a year on. the noise the september one made will stay with me forever.

The L(ove) and R(ayleigh) waves are often the most destructive. They are slower than the P and S waves that you mentioned. The P-Wave - if there is enough lag time before the S-Wave arrives - is the warning wave before the destructive waves arrive. The L and R waves are the ones that cause the rolling motion towards the end as the main shock tapers off. If you are close to the epicentre, you might not have that grace period and will just have to take cover as fast as you can.
Bloody hell!! you can actually clearly see your house move to the left at about 15 sec (watch the curtains) amazing footage! Was in ChCh for my Nana's funeral a few weeks ago, so sad to see so many iconic buildings that were such a part of my childhood already gone or about to be demolished. Thanks for posting this mate.
