  • In this lesson, we look at the difference between verbs of perception (e.g. hear, see, watch, listen, etc.) that are followed by gerunds (the continuous form) and ones that are followed by infinitives (in this case, base verb form). For instance, we will look at the difference between the following two examples: 'I saw the children play' and 'I saw the children playing'.

    Dear Andrew, thank you for introducing useful structures and very clear way of teaching! Here are my exercises:
    1 - Yesterday I saw the thief break into my house through the chimney but I couldn't scream because I was scared.
    2 - I heard the couple arguing and ran to.

    Thank you sir. If i saw these expressions without knowing their rules i would be extremely confused.
    Sir. Is it the same with the verb "find" because with the verb " find" the noun comes before the past participle or the adjective . For example:
    I found my office stolen. or
    I found Canada beautiful.
    Is there a difference between the past participle form and the adjective because i noticed that we always use the past participle as an adjective

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Find is not a verb of perception so it is different. In the sentence ' I found Canada beautiful' it just means 'I thought that Canada was beautiful'. I'm releasing a video on 'participial adjectives' soon that will hopefully answer your questions about past and present participles.

    Awesome video, thanks a lot! :)
    Two questions about the last two sentences (as a non-native speaker of English I don't know exactly) :
    1) What about: "I heard my name being called twice", when I'm talking about a specific situation in the past when my name was called twice?
    2) What about "I saw the buildings being destroyed"? Would that mean I saw people throwing bombs / stones / whatever, so I describe the act of destruction while the sentence you gave us would mean that I saw the result (the destroyed buildings)?
    As a non-native speaker of English I am not sure about that.
    Thanks in advance, stay healthy! :)
