Both locomotives pulling the train with the generator car only produce HEP when in Notch-8. So, to save fuel and cut down on noise pollution, the generator car is sent along.

@@Big_Diehl Yah but the f40 screaming is iconic, I think the grand canyon should save the generator cars for the Alcos and Steam engines.
Wilfstor but it’s horrific noise pollution, especially so in the National Park.
Wilfstor it could be due to the fact that the f40s have been modified to burn “ultra low sulfur” diesel fuel.
