Today is the anniversary of Napoleon's self-coronation that occurred in 1804 at the Notre-Dame Cathedral.
Napoleon Bonaparte designed a new coronation ceremony unlike that for the kings of France, which had emphasized the king's consecration (sacre) and anointment and was conferred by the archbishop of Reims in Reims Cathedral. Napoleon's was a sacred ceremony held in the great cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris in the presence of Pope Pius VII. Napoleon brought together various rites and customs, incorporating ceremonies of Carolingian tradition, the Ancien Régime, and the French Revolution, all presented in sumptuous luxury. Pius was present at the ceremony to bless his reign and legitimate Napoleon's Empire by the Catholic Church.
The act of crown himself was scandalous in all Europe and represent that the State was above the religious power.
This is an extract of the American romantic movie "Désirée" (1954), directed by Henry Koster. The movie is about the relationship of Napoleon and Désirée, Marshal Bernadotte's wife and the first woman that Napoleon ask for her hand who accept to marry him. Here Napoleon is played by Marlon Brando, Désirée by Jean Simmons, Joséphine by Merle Oberon and Pope Pius VII by Leonard George.
This movie is not exactly accurate and I don't know how much accurate is this scene but I want to share this with you today.
