    My potatoes are in grow bags and following this method is producing better results than anything else I have ever tried, and I've been growing in ground potatoes for about 30 years. So those of you who have said he doesn't understand potato plants, don't knock it until you have tried it.

      Well said ! Thank you for sharing this with us ! I always grow in the ground too , but after I tried the bags it was much better, I feel like this was the fastest I ever got a nice potato harvest.. I might do some sweet Potatoes next ...thank you 🙏🏾🌱

    I just pruned my Kennebec potatoes after seeng this, a 44 foot row. Man are they nice now and you can see light at the base and the air flow is superb. All of those leaves were in danger of getting soil born bacteria and didn't get any light to be productive anyway. This is a great tip and something that never would have crossed my mind. Thanks for the advice, I know it will be very beneficial. I bet it helps keep slugs at bay too since it's not dark and overly moist. Plus now I can scatter the "Slug Bait" Iron phosphate granules to do them in. 👍🏻

    I have 10 acres and my garden is in the ground and my First crop was planted in February, live in Southern Illinois USA. Our winter’s have changed but even if it has frozen I still plant them, when it’s getting warmer and the green tops appear. I top them out about 3 times, using bone meal and grey lime a couple of times for fertilizer. I just cut the tops off to about 6 inches and after the 3rd time I let them grow. But still trim off some leaves. Same as I do my tomatoes and vine crops.

I already find that growing in a grow bag has been fantastic and I may try it on my fall crop when I plant in a month or so (I have a super long growing season here). My current crop is dying back already so it’s too late to try this on them though I’m curious to see how it affects my harvest in the fall. Learn something new everyday! Thanks!

    I heard that heat is bad for potatos. I planted my first crop and they have tall leaves but arent dying off yet, but now we are getting into high 80's, not sure what I should do. I will use these tips on my next crop tho! Oh, when i dig these up will I have to amend the soil or will it be ok to just use liquid fertilizer on them? Ty for your help!!

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah potatoes are not the best in hot weather Also try to plant or or keep them in a cooler shaded area , liquid fertilizer or any fertilizer is good for a boost.. If you plant in a container, always remove some of the lower lease for good air flow and it helps the plants a lot.. every 2 to 3 weeks. I sprinkle a little bit of used coffee grounds to help keep away some bugs and also help the plant as a small fertilizer..

    Where on Long Island? I’m a second year gardener in south Amityville and my garden spans across two waterfront properties so everything is in raised beds or containers. I grow my potatoes in 25-30 gallon grow bags and I bury the seed potatoes up to the top of the container. I don’t hill therefore I don’t prune. In this case do you still recommend pruning? Once all of the stems and leaves are about 18 inches tall I mulch with straw to avoid green potatoes. Great info on the flowers. I’m running out to cut them all off now.

    I have a volunteer potato in a grow bag, it grew from a potato peel 😮. Mine doesn't not stand up straight like yours it's more like a vine I wonder if i should tie it up? Does it matter with potatoes? P.S. I peeked and it's definitely a potato I saw some babies in the soil a while back

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, you could tie it up if you want to, especially if you need to save space in your garden. And as it's bushy, it's always good to prune on the lower part of this. We have a better airflow.. keeping the plant healthier..
      A good thing to do to this as a plan grow. You prune on the bottom and you add more soil so you can get more potatoes

    We dug 8 in trenches and started them like that. Theyre doing well but..tall! We have covered them once but I didnt know I could prune them. • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If your plant is way too big around 40 inches tall I would definitely prune the top and any flowers .. The plant will focus more energy towards the potato ..

    • @mssavedin92
      @mssavedin92 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankyou. So what I understand is this...Its ok to prune the main growing tips (tops) and stems and several leaves within reason of course, without damaging the growth if its 40 inches tall? I just found this video and finding out I'm making a few mistakes already! I planted a very dried out potato with several buds about a month ago. I wasn't sure it would grow, I'd be drying it for about 8 months. I chose a rather shallow, but wide pot and to my surprise it really just blew up! All of the eyes are growing into huge stalks! Now I am wondering if I should cut down the smaller ones and maybe one or more of the larger ones. From this single potato there are at least nine stalks and they are tall! One of them is about 15" already and I planted this potato maybe like 5 weeks ago!
    I have never ever grown a potato before so when I saw all the stalks I was pretty happy, lol They haven't begun to flower yet, so I'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks for the tips, I will be covering some of the exposed roots with more soil tonight after I do some pruning but is it too late to do that now at this point or do I still have a chance to increase the yield? I mean, honestly if I get one potato from it, it would replace the one I didn't eat and that would be awesome! But more would be better!
    I appreciate this video, thank you for sharing your tips with us!! 💖
    Also, its been drinking like a gallon of water a day (its been in the upper 90's/lower 100's here in NM) Is that enough water or too much water? Look up determinate v indeterminate potatoes. It might be the variety you planted. Determinate grow on one level and are usually fast growing early ones (but there does seem to be some debate) while main crop are mostly indeterminate, so grow on many levels, hence the need to hill.

    Do your plastic bags have holes in them?

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes ... I am swapping the grow bags better than the plastic actually... .. These one have many holes at the bottom and have a window that you can open and close at the side

      I bought those off Amazon too. The peep hole flap is hilarious, you'll never see a potato through it. I use fabric grow bags now but honestly these plastic ones hold the moisture so much better. I actually like them.

    How about yellowing of plants

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      If your potato leaves are turning yellow it could be the watering is off. Maybe too much water or maybe a plant is lacking fertilizer, especially nitrogen.. .
      Water every three or four days. Add some organic fertilizer and you could also add some used coffee ground

    Update. My potato vines are almost 4 feet high. I pruned some but access is not really available without ruining them all. Looks like they reached quite a bit. There alot of space in between the leaf sets so I dont know how much of growth I can take without ruining the plants PLUS I didnt expect them to grow so HIGH and there no room to walk in between the rows and there are 4 rows., 20 feet long .....BIG SIGH>>>:( Some have fallen over...many are up and reaching FWD to the west.. One thing I remembered was that all last year, I threw banana peels and coffee grounds in that garden.....I couldnt figure out why theres so much leaf grow because the GAIA fertilizer we applied at planting was 2-8-4. Anyhow...thats that. So, yesterday, I bought a big bag of kennebec seed taters on clearance for only $2. So, Im going to plant many in containers. I have till mid July to get them in ..were in zone 8B in lower mainland BC. I want short potatoe plants ....not vines.

      @Greentgarden  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally agree with you. Those potato plants got really big.. That's some good deal you have and the Growing in container is really good too. I feel like it grows faster in containers for some reason or bag .. I cut off everything at the top of my potato plant and basically lifted the die in the corner , Tomorrow I will harvest and do a video coming up soon..

      @@Greentgarden we grew them in containers last yr. we layered them too. Anyhow, vines got huge there too. Crazy!! I might have put too much nitrogen rich soil in and fertilizer but, thats on me. Got that planting idea from Tony in the UK. Very small harvest from 15....15 gal containers. Anyhow, I wonder what soil to use and will most likely use the specialty fertilizer for taters, its a 4-20-20. Not organic but I may just have to try it anyways. How many potatoes do you use in a pot?ie. a 5 gallon or a 10 gallon pot? I even have sand bags, theyre 12 inches wide by 18 inches tall and they drain well enough, any thoughts on those? Thankyou, I can hardly wait to see your new video!!

    Pruning potatoes?
    Where is this comming from?

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yea , This is coming from greentgarden baby lol 😁 as I grow every day, I don't Fail, I either learn or i accomplish the mission ! Think about it the potato grows at the bottom of the roots not the top , so if we focus more energies towards the bottom we will get a bigger harvest.. Also pruning off some of the lower leaves is good for air flow , Keep the plant a little disease free , the plant will use less energy on leaves and more on growing potatoes..

  • @miltkarr5109

    Pretty skeptical. Mine grow so big they flop out and then those little baby leaves get tons of light.

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You could always cut off the top if the plant grows too tall .. the potato will still grow

      @@Greentgarden ill go ahead and do that on half a row this year but my intuition says they'll yield less. Bigger tops IME produce more potatoes unless they are planted too tight shading each other out. I have some on 30" rows already touching so they'll be a good candidate they just might do better cut.
