Fun fact: Alejandro Chacoff, the guy who wrote one of the articles you put in the description box, is my former English professor's son. And I'm in the middle of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The world is smaller than we think.

This book is a kick in the face of the very meticulous image we create for ourselves. We have a more urgent need for violence and vulgarity than we would like to admit and this book just throws that in your face. Great review, I loved you comments!
Nassar is a hidden literary treasure.
PS: Lavoura Arcaica ruined my life. 10/10 would recommend.

One thing I think you'll like is "No Longer Human" by Japanese author Osamu Dazai. It reminds me of a more haunting and personal "Notes From Underground." Dazai killed himself shortly after sending the book to his editor, both he and his wife drowned themselves together.

It's amazing how you review books from my own country that I have never even heard of. Love your channel, especially when you talk about brazilian books ;)
On the subject of giving your art away to experience real life, I find that very brave and very strange, as most artists do the opposite, giving their entire lives for their crafts, which generally makes for brilliant masterpieces. I guess there are many ways to be an artist, and that's the beauty of it.

Nassar actually only wrote 3 books. Besides theses 2 published in English, there’s a short stories reunion. His whole bibliography is a 300 something page book, still amazing of course

Read it a long time ago and also saw the movie. Enjoyed both. I don't like the translation 'a cup of rage'. To me 'A glass of wrath' is kinda closer to the meaning in Portuguese. Now looking forward to re-reading, if I can get a copy here in Ireland :D

One way to understand the final chapter could be the following: although we listen to her narration, she uses some of the same words he uses in the beginning of the first chapter. So, are we really listening to her? When we say something, albeit sharing similar points, we don't word it the same way. Moreover, the final chapter has got the same title the first one does and we don't know whether she is returning to him after that blazing row or if it is in the before it
