    First congratulations for the new video, I watch it twice.
    Secondly like you said: you need to deliver quality rather than bidding on price. If price is your USP (unique selling point) in the end someone will make it cheaper than you ...
    Also from my (short) experience you must develop some unique selling points: why to choose me rather than others. If you create a compelling offer where you mix your skills with fast time delivery and price most probably you'll get the job. What I've learn till now:
    1. Make it about the client not about you. Tips: ask for more details, don't bid on your speculations, ask for details.
    2. Think from their side, think as entrepreneur. In the end it's all about profitability.
    3. There is no secret formula, you need to create your own formula. Work hard, harder than anyone and use the secret ingredient: do something extra, deliver something for free and don't expect nothing in return. I had clients that send me +10% or even more. Some they appreciate some don't, but you will feel better in your skin and that what's matter at the end of the day, it's not all about money.
    4. Be good, but be specific, like John said in one of his video, peak your field and try to push only on that and you will be successfully.
    5. See Elance, Odesk as your clients pipe and do not stop bidding because sooner or later you will not have on what to work so create a program/schedule and find out how you can keep the clients coming.
    6. Create relations, rather than finding clients, get personal, we are humans in the end.
    7, 8, 9 and 10 “Work like there is someone working 24 hours a day to take it away from you.” - Mark Cuban
    We live a global world now so you need to reinvent yourself from time to time, do not settle, try to get out of your comfort zone and hustle. It's easy? Definitely No, but in the end all your efforts will be rewarded.
    Finally be very good at what you do and if you love it you will be the luckiest man on the world because you will not work a day for the rest of your life.

    Loved the podcast, I use to freelance back in 09-10 and trying to get back into it after I am done moving to Portugal, but the trends are so different now !
    Websites that have freelance jobs are so competitive now plus that super cheap rates on big jobs. it looks like this time its gonna take a lot more than just skills to get a job online, but your stuff is just off the hook help for me.
    Thanks a lot John.

    Thanks a lot for these pieces on e-lancing, i love that they're somewhat generic and not useful for developers only; I want to try freelancing on writing and I can find a lot of useful advice to apply to my needs.
    I've also really liked the fact that you didn't dismiss people who price their work with less money - this is really grounded and respectful, since not everybody is so privileged in this world. keep up the good work! :)

    Hey thanks for this video it really gave me alot to think about. I fit into that category of someone from America who is working as a freelancer and seeing people swarm all over jobs for next to nothing and thinking how can I possibly compete. You put the problem in the perfect context and gave me a better way to look at things. Keep up the great work John!

    It is hard for you to understand other people where one month living cost 200 euros or less, or working hour is paid 1.21 euros, or where you can find kidney for 800 dollars. Yes is very difficult, developed country develop upwork, and similar platform to devalue labor.

    Great content, as always.
    I have to say though (and this is coming from someone who has a minute fraction of the real world experience that you do and is NOT a coder), I am coming more and more to the conclusion that these sites have very little value.
    I have yet to make a dent to the extent that I even get a meaningful response to my proposals. I'm really starting to think that nearly everyone offering the opportunities on Elance, Upwork, etc is only considering price, so trying to compete on value is -- to them anyway -- a little like speaking Mandarin among the Cantonese. Sure they probably understand value in concept, but likely could care very little about it. It may not have started out that way, but these sites really do seem to represent a Race to the Bottom and little else.

      +Jon F. Lee Marketing Communication Services Yeah. In many ways that's true. If you're brand new then you may have to work at a reduced rate to get the job history and ratings on those sites built up. Then, as you "rank" higher you can begin to charge more.

I made mistake like jumped on in the first project that was offered to me without securing the terms & conditions of the projects, or without the background check of the employer. But you have covered some very crucial points, That a newbie like me should pay attention to.

    Yes the rates are crap, but here's a catch, been on odesk even before they merged with elance, at the beginning the rates were so low that I could afford only 2 cheap beers or a cheap energy drink around here, as my reviews started coming in I could increase the rate and now some clients down right refuse low rate applications and would accept only those above 30$, sound ok except for the fact the site takes 10% and the resident country then after that takes away 45% in taxes and all that bs. It's pretty interesting how things work there, it's split between cheapskates and companies who need to deliver some projects on tight deadlines. And yes the prices are utter crap anyways, here in Romania I could make almost triple the amount as unskilled labor at car washes than working on freelance platforms, which says a lot especially since I'm also from a crap country where some industries are paid worse than the labor in China.

      I've been playing with photography for 17 year's now I should say, recently the past 3 year's have been really getting into photo editing. Mastered adobe photoshop and corel draw in no time. I have no history of education in this field except for what has been self taught. Editing pictures is actually a relaxer for me, to sit there for an hour or two fixating on a picture actually quiets my brain for that time and eases my anxiety.

      Are you on Instagram? If you're a photographer, Instagram is your dream. Just post photo regularly and have a link to your "hire me" page on your profile. If your pictures are good, they'll get good play on there. You'll build a following and get clients as a result. Facebook is good too.

    Those sites are simply miserable.
    I though use odesk since 2012 and I have few clients who feed me every month. I apply few jobs in odesk but most of the jobs I receive from my existing clients, so if you can grab few clients and prove them you are trustworthy then you are ok but it seems nowadys its very very difficult and miserable.
    What I have been noticing since 2013 that there are lots of fake jobs, fake clients around this odesk and I am certain it is now a fraudulent site where most of the jobs posted by odesk employees. $5 for web design.... $3.30 for 1 psd design etc. And its true if you ask questions on job descriptions they dont bother to reply. Most of the jobs descriptions are two line of sentences and they ask do We have any questions. Its a scam, simply scam. Very few jobs are posted look decent, genuine but even you apply you never hear them.
    I recommend go for toptal.com it's genuine and not easy to be accepted.

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zakir Sajib agreed they can be miserable and there's a lot of junk to wade through. I'd still say that there are legitimate clients there, though... just takes a bit to find them. But. like you said... once you do find them and establish a relationship, they can become clients for life... which is what we all should be doing.

    • @nirvana7420
      @nirvana7420 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there are few clients. I do have few clients and they stick with me for couple years from usa, Canada and Australia. But sometimes they have work sometimes not. So when they don't have I bid on odesk but it's seriously awful. I am still looking for clients outside odesk. I want to try toptal.com. is your client based in all usa I mean do u work for locally? What's your approach? Call them or email ? How you attract them?

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zakir Sajib Most of my clients are US or UK based. My approach is now that all my clients come to me. I get probably 4-5 new quote requests each month... most of which I can't even take one between existing clients and the few new ones I do accept. There's a whole system I use to do this but these TH-cam videos are a part of it. Creating content is a huge game-changer.

    • @nirvana7420
      @nirvana7420 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So basically strong web presence is the key. Potential clients feel you are an expert in this area and make a decision based on it. Got it! I do have website and I think i should redesign it and use youtube or blog where I can write my opinions/tutorials related to my expertise. This will give me a strong web presence and will bring leads. But I guess its long time process. Currently I use behance where I upload all my work as portfolio but I don't have any strong web presence except odesk.

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep except at first I would focus more on networks outside your site. Developing a presence on your site IS a long term process; however you can get more immediate reaction on sites like TH-cam, LinkedIn, and Quora. LinkedIn is especially powerful for web design services. Once you build a following on those sites you can bring it methodically to your site. Building an email list is another big one. That should be the main focus of your website: collect leads.

    I was never able to get any job in Elance or Freelancer.com, oDesk was the only place i was able to get contracts. after that i started looking for jobs in different forums and it's working okay now.
    I am a game developer, my web development skills are a bit low compared to making mobiles or desktop apps. but i only want to work on games (unless am out of job lol)

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ala slipknot that's fairly typical. Those sites are pretty competitive. Took me a bit to figure them out.

    • @alaslipknot
      @alaslipknot 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Morris True, i managed to find a long term job thanks to oDesk (it's been 8 months now) i consider that pure luck because before i was only able to get contracts only if i lower my hour rate, fortunately i live in a developing country (Tunisia) so the coast of living here is a lot cheaper compared to more developed country, but still, i don't find it fair to work that cheap...

    • @john.morris
      @john.morris  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ala slipknot nice! That's good, though. I think we all consider it luck but it is what it is! Yeah, I think I covered this in the video, but the sites get you to compete. Unfortunately, most developers aren't as great as marketing themselves so we end up competing on price instead of value and it becomes a race to the bottom. I was able to figure out how to compete on value and so made decent money... but I still quickly moved off Elance once I got some momentum. My income quadrupled in 3 months once I got off Elance. But, I still needed it at first to build up my portfolio, testimonials, get some experience, etc. That's why I recommend they should only ever be leveraged to build your overall business... and NOT be your sole plan for earning as a developer. Anyhow, sounds like you have it figured out. Congrats on the long term job. Those are always nice! :)

    • @alaslipknot
      @alaslipknot 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Morris Thanks! and yeah that true, the long term job helped a lot recently, specially when college is back (am an IT student specified in Embedded System)
      And now am starting to focus on what you called "marketing yourself", am not sure if am doing it right but am trying :p
      My goal is to stop making games for people (i share some of these games here : aladineprojects.tumblr.com/ ) and instead focus on project that i love to work on (i share most of it in my blog : alaslipknot.tumblr.com/ )
      Am not sure when will this happens but i am trying to learn from my current employer because unlike what i was thinking 2 years ago, being a good programmer isn't enough to start your own business, marketing and a good budget are a must have, at least from what i learned so far.
      Thanks again man, i really appreciate the effort you're making to help people :)

    • @john.morris

    3. Can I get work from Up-work and Freelance sectors without completing my profile 100 %?

      This is a very bad form of generalization.. Though there are many in India pretending to be experts and trying to sell you the service in unbelievable rates, most Westerners or Aussies fall for the low rates and award the project.. I work as a freelancer and I am from India, I charge minimum $50 an hour for my services.. I have a very good client base...It took me extreme hard work to get to that level... So don't fall for Indian freelancer just for low rates... There are many brilliant people who charge at par with Americans for their services but they are simply worth it..

    Freelancer is fucking scam site - be hapy if you are still didnt fill any bank details, if you did, you have bad luck - coz they will charge money from your card anytime!!!!!!!!! Why?? Because they have your bank details and they will excuse on some subscribtions or some like that.. so then all you can do is remove your paypal (or what u used) credit card / bank details.
    AND WHAT IS WORST - After you remove your account, they will charge anyway! I tried to block them on paypal, but unsuccessful!!! Maybe coz they had Paypal Pro or some higher subscribe version
    SO as I said - simply use new bank details on your paypal / other pay method u used. :) Thats what will kill them
    No. Its not scam - ITS FUCKING SCAM, RETARDED AUTISTIS MOTHERFUCKED SHITLANCER
    SPREAD WORD - TRUST ME ITS BIGGEST FAKE OUT THERE.
