You could take some of the guesswork out of some of it and use a VU meter plugin. Solo the kick and make it sit at -7db. Then add the bass until you reach -4db. Could be any number as long as you get an increase of 3db. Got this tip from the guys who produced the last couple of Behemoth albums. Works for me.
I appreciate this sooo much man. There is so much to learn getting into mixing and seeing people do basic things like volume balancing really helps. I swear its so hard to find information that doesn't assume I already have a deep understanding of every little thing and 10 grand worth of plugins. Great video
Thank you man! This is entirely my goal doing this as well. Nothing sucks more than someone showing you something you want to learn and then have them tell you that you just “need this one plugin” and just leave you looking for alternatives after. I appreciate it 🙏
I used a kick sample sound and mixed it in here. What I like to do is have a track that I route my unprocessed kick to (or processed if it sounds better) and filter out all high end so it’s just a “super sub kick” sound. I have a video on my drum mix up if you haven’t seen it though!
@@BlakeLW thanks. that's really helpful to know. I'm using the DT 700 Pro X (closed back). and I could really shoot my brains out now. even after trying to eq them, then mixing. there is so many problems and fuck ups with so many frquencies. impossible I get better mixes with £20 IEM. you think the HD600 would be good for mixing metal?
I’ll lower it to the level of volume to a volume I could just hear people talking to me if they were in the room, if not a bit more when doing the initial balancing. Then I’ll raise it and see if anything needs to be fixed and go from there. When I’m finalizing a mix, I typically throw it back to 0!

I’m absolutely going to give this a shot in my next test mix. I appreciate you passing the info along!

the turning everything down to hear the balance better thing was what i needed today
Again so easy and cohesive to follow.
And you ACTUALLY GIVE A WARNING ABOUT VOLUME LEVELS!
It ain’t much but it’s honest work 🫡
This video is without a doubt more balanced than my diet. 👏🦖
All my balancing energy goes here 🗣️🗣️

I appreciate you 🙏 Thank you so much!
That drum kick is everything. What is it?

@@BlakeLW would you ever provide as a one-shot?

Great video! How would you master this song with stock plugins? That would be great. Master track.
I’ll see what I can do!
How about your master output when balancing those instruments?

@@BlakeLWthank you so much Blake ❤
