Good video. I have one of these and felt that the downsides of this product are that the straps (that could have been better quality and securely wrapped the entire circumference of the canoe on both ends), the lack of block/tackle leverage, and the twin rope hoist lock system that makes lowing the thing awkward. It is functional though.
Nice video. These Rad hoists did not work for me because they did not get my kayak tight enough up to the ceiling. I will be returning them to Amazon and getting something else, probably a homemade system. Also, when the kayaks were up at the ceiling they were extremely hard to lower because of the brakes on the pulley system. I think you can just bypass the brakes.
Question for yah, I have an old town saranac 160, such I want to hang up from my garage just as you've done. Issue is that I have about 22" of room to play with before the canoe would be hitting my head. Do you reckon I could fit the canoe (13") and the hoist in that space? What's the distance from your cieling to the bottom of the canoe?
I don't think it's going to work for you. Mine sits 40" below the ceiling, 15" is the canoe and 25 inches are the pulleys and straps. I think I could get it a few inches higher but not much. I would bet the best you would be able to do is about 35" from the ceiling. If I think of any other way I'll let you know but I think you are going to have to find another way or duck a lot :-)
@@BradyAdventures lol yeah that's what I figured. I got the hoist anyways, going to put it under my deck and chain the canoe to a post. Thanks for the follow up!
I just ordered the same hoist for my Old Town Kayak. How has it been working out for you and do you know the measurement from the ceiling to the bottom of your canoe when it is up tight. trying to see what I am looking at for walking space under my kayak.
Dustin Marsh i don't know how i lived without it, love having the canoe out of the way but still super easy to get down. From the ceiling to the bottom of my canoe is 40" it is a very large canoe and wide. A smaller canoe or kayak could be mounted higher but not sure how much. There are loops down the strap every few inches that allow you to shorten the hang but depends on width of boat how far you can go. Hope that makes sense.
Perfect. Thank you. I have the Old Town Predator 13 Kayak. basically the size of a canoe 13' long and about 36" wide in the middle. I have a 9' ceiling in my garage so that is going to put the kayak right in my face. I will have to figure out how to get it up more. Thank you again for the info and video
How has it held up? I just hung mine up for my 13' kayak. One thing I'd recommend you do is tie a span of rope between your 2 claws at the exact length you need to keep them perfectly where you want AND you avoid potential slippage at the bow or stern. They actually have a hole on each claw for that purpose. Hoping yours has held up. The brake on mine seems SUPER tight. Does yours move freely when not under tension, and maybe mine is riveted too tightly?
So far mine has held up great. I was worried about the rope fraying but it is still fine. Thanks for the pointer that is a great idea! My break is pretty smooth as I remember I haven't had it down in a while since our rivers have been super high for the last few months. I think you might be right about the rivets. Thanks for checking us out!
You could get that about a foot higher. Your straps that are connected to your hooks. There is about a foot of space between the hooks and canoe. If you get straps that are tight all the way around the canoe and the straps are flush with the top of the canoe going straight across the top, then connect your hooks and you can raise it about a foot higher.
To get it even higher you could make holes in the ceiling and attach the pulley blocks so they sit above the ceiling's drywall - maybe using two by fours mounted to the top of the joist (to attach the pulley bocks to) if there's no room between the joists and drywall for the pulley block. Or you could lie the canoe onto a wide plank or piece of plywood, strap the canoe to the plywood, and attach the pulley hooks to the ends of the plywood and lift the plywood shelf. Maybe not ideal, but I think that's what I want to do when my system arrives from Amazon in a few days. My garage joists are exposed but they're only 7 feet high and I want to be able to lower the canoe onto my car roof racks which are 5.5 feet above the ground. There won't be much wiggle room, so I'll need to raise my kayak right up to the joists pretty much.
Yeah I really wish it pulled tighter to the ceiling. We have had it up there a long time now and it hasn't been an issue at all since it is just high enough. If you were a taller person or have lower ceilings it would be a hassle. Thanks for checking us out and have a Happy New Year!
I wish you would have explained running the rope through the pulleys
sorry about that, this was one of my first videos, i have learned a lot since then, good luck

Thank man! Yeah, I agree, the straps are a little wonky but do the job.

Yeah it does sit off the ceiling more than I would like too but it worked for me. If you create something better I would love to see it. Thanks!
Brady Adventures what height is your ceiling in the video?

I just came across your video and I was wondering, how far apart did you mount the pullies ?
I have mine ~6 fee apart. I guess it depends a lot on the length of you canoe and you joist spacing. Hope that helps!

Great video! Thanks for the review. How low does the kayak hang from the ceiling?
Thanks! The top of the Canoe is about 26" from the ceiling and the bottom is about 40"

This looks exactly like another company's product that came first. I think it is called Suspenz.

@@DB-bj5wv Great ideas! Thanks for the input!
Yes the written instructions are pretty bad ! They could have made them very clear and easy
👍
Too bad it's not really close to the ceiling, that would help, particularly with walking out the door into the garage.

I just built a vertical kayak hoist, check the video out on my channel for a tutorial on how and let me know what you think. Thanks!
