- Hey everyone! Welcome back to the homestead. In today’s video, I'm excited to share a detailed guide on propagating tomato plants. 🌱🍅
In this video, I’ll show you how to cut the suckers, explain what suckers are, and demonstrate the entire process of preparing them for propagation. To start, trim suckers ( they grow right above the leaves, growing vertical with the plant), remove any lower leaves from the sucker and place each sucker in a jar full of water. Make sure the sucker is submerged. Set the jars on a sunny windowsill for a week. In a few days you should start to see white roots growing. In a week or so, you'll have tons of roots growing off each sucker.
Once the suckers have a decent amount of roots, it's time to plant. Grab a potting pot, filled with soil, and start to plant the suckers deep in the soil. You want to plant deep so the new tomato plants are sturdy and strong in the soil. Water and keep in a greenhouse or with the rest of your seedlings.
Once the tomato plants are strong and have a root ball (root will typically grow through the holes in the pots), you can plant them in the ground, in a garden bed or grow bag!
This is an easy and efficient way to expand and grow your garden without spending loads of money! Huge budget friendly hack! You can literally turn one plant into multiple! I trimmed 2 of my tomato plants, I rooted 7 suckers and planted all 7. Nature is so cool
Most people trim their suckers anyway so this is just a fun way to "up cycled" plants into new ones! Propagation is a super cool way to grow your own food and plants. Have you ever propagated any plants?! I'd love to hear more ways to expand my garden while being self sufficient / self sustaining and eco friendly!
