Trends take so long to hit Preston that they’re basically still in the 90s. Any rural place, at least in SE Idaho is the same way. Preston in 2003 was very 80s, with elements of the 70s still hanging on.

I was in middle school too when this movie was out in theaters, When we had the school dance, someone i knew dressed up in napoleons signature suit, when he went to the school dance in the film. I always heard, "Your Mom goes to college" most of the time walking to class.

Heh. My wife is originally from Mexico (we met in grad school). A few years ago, we both joined 23andMe. I found that I had about 1100 cousins -- but mostly very distant (4th, 5th and beyond). I only had a few "close" cousins. On the other hand, my wife did her test and found about 1,800 cousins -- but nearly 1,500 were "close" cousins (mostly 2nd and 3rd). She joked that they must have had a 23andMe special sale in Mexico.
In amongst so many excellent performances in this movie, Tina Majorino’s ability to play both intense awkwardness and very understated warmth should not be underestimated.
The ending is just Napoleon finally getting someone to "play me," as he and Deb literally fade into the sunset. It's actually touching. It's the greatest teen movie ever made and Jon Heder's dance to Jamiroqui is seriously tight up there with Astaire and Travolta as far as classic movie dance scenes

Spent a lot of time in Preston Idaho, my grandparents lived there (my grandfather still does) and this movie reflects the town perfectly, odd and quirky. They used to have a Napoleon dynamite festival and a little headquarters for people to visit to get information about the film locations and such. This movie will always be a favorite.
