- Yanmen Pass, also known as "Wild Goose Gate" and "China's No. 1 Pass", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a famous historical military fortress in China and an important integral part of the ancient Great Wall. It has played an important role in Chinese history as a barrier against northern invasions and a hub for cultural exchanges. Its magnificent scenery and rich history make it a fascinating destination for history lovers and travelers.
Yanmen Pass is situated in the Hengshan Mountains(恒山), approximately 20 kms north of Daixian County (代县) in Xinzhou City (忻州), Shanxi Province (山西省). It stands at an elevation of over 1,000m and is surrounded by rugged peaks and steep valleys. The terrain is extremely steep and is known as the "barrier of the northern border".
The most convenient way to get to Yanmen Pass is by car: Driving from Taiyuan(太原), the capital city of Shanxi Province to Yanmen Pass takes around 3 hours. The route offers scenic mountain views and is accessible via well-maintained roads.
You can also take a long-distance bus or train from Taiyuan to Daixian County. From there, local transport can bring you to Yanmen Pass, in general, by public transportation it costs about 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on the selected transfer method.
The walking tour of Yanmen Pass takes about 2 hours and is a 4kms loop. You can walk clockwise along the Great Wall, of which the main body is well preserved, with the ancient roads paved with bluestone, arched gates and stone carvings. You will pass by Ningbian Tower(宁边楼), Yan Tower(燕塔), Tianxian Gate(天险门), Beacon Tower(烽火台), Arrow Tower(箭楼), Ancient Fort(古炮台) etc. The beacon tower was an early warning system in ancient times. Standing on the beacon tower, you can overlook the surrounding mountains and feel the magnificent scenery of that time.
Yanmen Pass is not only a majestic pass, but also a symbol of ancient Chinese military wisdom and a microcosm of the Chinese nation's spirit of resisting foreign enemies and defending their homeland. It integrates military, cultural and natural landscapes and is an important window for understanding Chinese history and the Great Wall culture.
