This theme created that unforgetable magnifisant steel-deserted-urban-industrial atmosphere. If GoW2 and GoW3 goes for epicness, GoW1 goes for the atmosphere of an abandoned, partially destroyed city

"14 years after E-day" or the main menu song for the original Gears, that song always had a creepy, eerie feel to it.

Gears 1 is a lot more unconventional, it's not orchestrated like most modern soundtracks so it's a lot more interesting to listen to.

Gears 1 had the best campaign because of it's dark gritty atmosphere, the music brings this out perfectly. Hope they re-create this for the next Gears game

The Gears of War Limited Edition was my first 360 game.
In the very first days i played it on a tiny old CRT TV, because i got my first HDTV a year later, and still was blown away by it´s graphics & the game overall.

I must say, the original Gears of War remains one of the greatest masterpieces of gaming. I just replayed all the old Gears games back to back so I can finally get to Gears 5 and while I still love 2 & 3, Gears 1 is such a stand out. The music is a huge part of that. It is an incredible combination of atmospheric, horror, as well as bombastic, glorious, epic action themes. It is inspired through and through, such a shame none of the games that followed managed to top it. There is a particular part of Gears 5 where a modified version of the main Gears theme was used and it is the most standount piece of music in that game lol. Brought me back instantly to listen to the original OST again.
I love how Gears of War (Xbox 360 version) was a dark and war-torn game and much darker than the Ultimate Edition version.
On Nov 7th, 2020, it will be 14 years after E-Day. Glad we're all still here.

Comparing this soundtrack to 4 and 5, it's like they forgot what type of game they were making. GoW was a dark, gritty game. You were fighting terrifying monsters and skulking around abandoned ruins. Now it's all rainbows and microtransactions... what a sad end.

One of the best game I have ever played
Man, this takes me back. GoW literally redefined a genre, and made us all sit up to see what the 360 was capable of. It was amazing in every single way. The sequence early in the game where Ming dies, and they bring the Beserker.. that was mindblowing stuff.

As a student composer, I continue to refer to this AMAZING soundtrack when I need a little inspiration on how to intelligently use percussion and low brass in a dark atmosphere. Goosebumps from start to finish, magnificent!

We also don’t talk ab gears 4 or 5. Atomsphere is completely terrible compared to gow 1 or 2. Even in gears 3 it started getting a bit too colorful for me but the gameplay was fun and innovative also the story was good so it more than made up for it. But idk man the atmosphere just doesn’t hit the same.

I was 7 years old when my dad got me this game for Christmas. He knew how much I loved this game when he took me to my uncles to play this for the very first time. I remember when my dad got it for me the price on this game stayed at 60 for like 2 years or 3. Anyway I played the game all the time it was the only game that I played every day and a lot of the time me and my dad would play the story together, we played it so much we’d even stay up late on a school night playing it together, Gears of war will always have a place in my heart. Interestingly Kevin Riepl also composed the soundtrack for Aliens: Colonial Marines, and he did an amazing job with it. Literally one of the few good things about that game.

Definitely the best Gears in terms of video and audio in general , it looked so gritty , the combat sounded more raw . This scared me when I was little in 2006 , the corpsers underground , the creepy fenix mansion , ... gears 2 had the abandoned facility but it was no where near as eerie as the first one's locations. Man has it really been 8 years since this game came out? Jesus.
Absolutely. Chapters 2 and 3 always scare the bejesus out of me more than the others. Plus, RAAM was the scariest antagonist in the series.
its because it was new and scary... you knew what to expect in the following series, the story arc'd alot better in the second, the third was more an arcade deal with ppl online (who can get more kills type thing) but yeah the scariness is more prevalent in the 1st but i think because your underground more and you don't know what to expect... like fuck those theron guards when you first see them...
Exactly. I personally felt that they sort of abandoned horror with the 2nd one. The first gears was much darker with little light, the kryll being omniscient and general creepiness, whereas the sequels put more emphasis on action and story (No complaints there)

Played the entire series and even after 5th, this is the best soundtrack of the series. It caught my attention after I noticed how his music had a big impact on feeling the scenes and making me go berserk in battles. I don't why they didn't continue with him but this soundtrack has been on repeat since day 1. He is so underrated

We're nearly out of 2021 and 2006 seemed like yesterday when this epic game series started. From leaving the prison in campaign to detonation of the light mass, this game has you hooked thanks to the awesome story, visuals, gameplay and of course, the sound track. How many here still have fond memories of the ice skating glitch, back flip glitches, shotgun glitch and throwing a smoke in that window to see the dude on the toilet?! I'm 40 now and all I can say is, long live gears!

I really missed Riepl in Gears 2 and 3. They still sounded good, but I don't think they came close to this soundtrack at all. The incredibly raw sound and composition in this is utterly stunning to me.
