  • Gladys Douglas Preserve is a 44-acre preserve that was saved from development by the efforts of citizens, local government and private donors who raised $10 million to buy the land in 2021. It is named after Gladys Douglas, a philanthropist and environmentalist who wanted to protect this land for future generations.
The first phase of the preserve's opening features a half-mile of walking trails that wind through native sand pine scrub and endangered Florida rosemary bald. Along the way, you will see signs that identify some of the plants and animals that live here, such as gopher tortoises, scrub jays and reindeer moss. Phase 2, which is not yet open, will feature the peaceful views of Jerry Lake. The lake will have a fishing pier, a canoe and kayak launch, a picnic pavilion and more trails.
