You can't forget humor, humor is needed to enjoy teaching and for students to enjoy being taught. Nearly all of the teachers I have had (most of which had taught for 10+ years) have said this and I entirely agree

This is very insightful, considering that I'm finishing my physics and chemistry studies and will soon become a teacher. I could easily be strict, but I don't want students to fear me, it makes them hate a subject that they might actually love

Awesome! Now I'm off because of the autumn break, I have got time to relax and reflect a bit on my teaching. I see that I definitely do this in the classes in which the students are extremely motivated, but in classes where the learners aren't paying intrinsically motivated, I tend to neglect these criteria. Good stuff!

For anyone watching this and wanting to know the most important thing about being an EFFECTIVE instructor. It mainly comes down to distractions. The more distractions you can "cut out" (as an instructor) the more effective you will be. The most important distraction to "cut out" is the use of filler/crutch words (and, um, etc) or phrases (you know). If you can "cut out" this one major distraction, then you are on your way to becoming a great instructor.
This lady seems to be a very good instructor/teacher, but the use of ands and ums was very distracting. If you noticed her using them, then that was a distraction. A distracted mind is a mind that isn't fully learning what is being taught.

I have always been thinking that making mistake is not obvious, but rather it's wrong. I guess this is the result of the educational systen of my country, Korea. Students in Korea (including me) often become afraid of answering, cuz we are anxious about our mistakes which may be nonexistent. Our parants, teachers, and many other adult have always taught us that making mistakes is a shame. But by watching this video, now I am able to say to them that that idea is basically wrong. Thank you for the nice tips. I hope I can be a great teacher like you.

I have a question for you. If you are in a classroom where 35 students are not discipline, do you think that a Teacher will continue being a good teacher? How can we "teachers" control that situation and continue being a good Teacher?

Jessica Garzón.-EGPE find the ring leaders and give them responsibility. Devise a seating plan. Disruptive students give them time outs. Reward good behaviour. Have end of term surprises or prizes. Like shopping vouchers for older children.

Start having one to one conversations with your biggest disrupters and let them know that you need their cooperation or things will not continue they way they have by allowing their disruptive behavior. Let them know that they will be held accountable for their attitudes, behavior and performance.

Very good tips, nicely presented, but being hyper critical way too many ehms! I noticed this as I'm an English teacher and it's something I do myself and after it being pointed out in student feedback I intend to cut it out, at least I'm not alone in doing this :)

This is what a good teacher's skills:
    1)Patient
2)Love the matter that he teaches and be well informed on it!
    3)A sense of humor.
    4)Friendly.
    5)Not Hot-Tempered.
6)Know how to make his students love the matter that he's teaching even if they didn't like it before.
    7)NO HOMEWORK!!!!

A good teacher has at least three of the four following characteristics:
    1. A deep love and knowledge of one's subject.
    2. A real enthusiasm for working with young people.
    3. A sense of humor.
    4. Being well organized.
I've known good teachers who lacked one of these traits (any one), but I've never known a good teacher who didn't have at least three of them.

I don’t think it’s hard for a teacher to be good. You have outlined some really good ideas, mine are:
    1. Be professional, stop bullying, reply to emails with kind, help students, don’t waste time in class.
    2. Look at the test
    3. Teach the content on the test without giving the answers
    4. Have frequent assessments (but not to frequent where they are studying constantly) but frequent enough where students will not have a bad grade for not doing too well in one or two assessments
    5. Don’t set unnecessary tasks that are not helpful
    6. Don’t give students homework the day before a test (they already have test revision, why start a new topic?)

no mate - you havent quite got the idea of feedback. Positive feedback is given in such a way that makes the kid want to try to improve any issues they have. Criticism is different and can really be called negative feedback. Kids are smart enough to know there are areas they need to improve.I think your trying to say that a student needs to know more then waht they have done well at - they also have areas they can improve - and we should always inform them of that ... just positively !!!

La la land! The first, most important element of being a good teacher is to be a frightening, dictatorial, straight-from-hell disciplinarian. What, you think the kids WANT to be in school? Ha! They hate every minute of being there -- and they will go to great lengths to undermine your enthusiasm, empathy, creativity and all your other pie-in-the-sky notions of pedagogy. A kid acts up: hammer him! Call his parents and demand they come in to discuss their little darling's disruptive nature. RULE your classroom, or you will get nothing done. At the slightest misbehavior STOP the class. Pound that little snot nose down. It might take several weeks to establish who's the boss -- and then you can ease into all the sweetness that this little lady in the video advocates so, um, enthusiastically. Demand excellence and you'll get it. Ask for excellence and they'll spit mud at you every time. And you'll be a pariah in the faculty lounge.
