Tom, thank you for posting your videos on the Masterbuilt, you do a awesome job! I own the Masterbuilt 560. I bought the extra center racks $50 and I bought the heavy duty custom weather cover $50. My tips are buy a wide putty scraper and remove the cast iron rack and scrape the crap off the roof of the heat diffuser from the last cook and empty your grease pan and tray of debris before the cook. My center rack temp runs about 10 degrees cooler than what I dailed in. If I want 225 on the center rack I dial 235 on the temp. I would not do long smokes on the cast iron grates. I did a butt and ribs on the cast iron and I had a little too much char. Use the center rack and put a water filled deep foil pan below. If you do that you never will get any unwanted burnt char on your proteins during my long smokes. I keep mine covered when not in use. Yes the custom Masterbuilt cover was $50 but it's heavy duty, water proof, and built to last. I love this pit it handles anything I throw at it delivering that charcoal smell and taste I crave. I was a 22" Weber Kettle guy for 38 years. This Masterbuilt gives you the taste you get with the Weber Kettle but with the convenience of a pellet grill.
DOC, what an awesome post. Do i have you down in my facebook group?? How about my newsletter, have you signed up? Thanks for the awesome post and I hope to see you commenting again. Enjoy!
Hey Tommy, this is Marcel in Yuma, Az, Hey man i, and "WE ALL" > really do APRECIATE your 6 month review of this grill. You are the VERY FIRST PERSON, who's had this, and put it up on TH-cam. Thanks so much Man,,,,, !
29 aka Marcel. Thanks, man and thanks for taking notice of that. Unfortunately, Masterbuild has not given me the time of day even though I continue to sell them grills. lol Appreciate you watching.
Great review Tommy. I have the 1050 and a 560 and the thing I love the most besides the flavor is the versatility of the cooker. I can get home at 5:00 and by 5:20 I can have it loaded up with fuel and up to temperature to cook , burger, chops or whatever for supper. The weekends I can hit it with the longer cooks. I can probably count on one hand how many times I have used my gasser since I got the 1050 in June. Keep the videos coming and we’ll keep watching.
Got to Respect Tommy. Been watching most of his Videos for Masterbuilt 1050… Guess wot been done ordered it and ordered the Mods from LSS. Can’t wait….from UK
Totally agree on a small propane tank starter, thermometer, and shelf! By the way, LSS and Klotes make stainless manifold, hopper lid cover and shelf mods. The MB gravity feed design seems like a great idea, but it’s just a matter of time before a competitor (Pit Boss, are you watching?) makes a higher end model in the $1000-1500 range.
What you're referring to is creosote build up -- not paint peeling as others think it is...I'd probably stay away from brushing any of the creosote back into the fuel chamber as it is believed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to be carcinogenic. As already mentioned by a few on here, just either use folded up aluminum foil to cover the inner lid area and you should be golden. There's nothing that Masterbuilt can do on this one; you'll get this same effect on Stumps, Old Country, etc. any gravity fed charcoal system. It's the nature of the beast and those are heftier/better-built units that cost a lot more money and people have discovered that good-ol' folded up tinfoil or aluminum foil works fine. Another good video, Tommy! Keep it up, sir!
@DefTaker, is covering the inner lid with foil enough to avoid the creosote? Or does that carcinogen still seep into the food since the fuel source is charcoal? (I just bought this Masterbuilt today and now I’m a little worried.)
Great review Tommy. I love my MB1050. I don't have anywhere near the number of cooks you or a lot of the folks in the Facebook group have but when I do use it, the food is just wonderful. This pit allows someone like me who is a self proclaimed noob to all this to put out food that is great with a whole lot of ease and simplicity. With the exception of the foil on the hopper lid, zero mods for me and I do not see adding any. For the price I paid, Ill be pleased with getting 2 maybe 3 years of cooking out of it. But for me, it is a great grill. Also wanted to say the news letter you email out every two weeks is a great read...
I had the 590 but my great Thanksgiving fire of ‘22 destroyed that from my lack of cleaning. Got the 1050 love it even more and with the LSS mods it’s a BEAST. I also have a Recteq Bullseye but I can’t decide which one tastes better so I use both a lot. Yeah get both🤣 Keep up the Awesome work Tommy! Cheers🍺
I'm here from the newsletter and I must say that your experience with the 1050 mirrors mine exactly. Nicely done! Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful review.
Nice review... I got the 800 series and on the first cook, the grate that catches the fuel clogged and had to constantly poke at the ashes to clear and allow air flow. I used lump mesquite and I think it may have gotten a dusty spot or layer as I dumped the bag small chunks in along with the fine powdery fuel. I'm not sure but am thinking that was why it clogged. A predicted 9-10 hr cook took 16 hr. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with the grate clogging? Also, I agree 100% with your assessment on the fold down shelf on the front of the grill. Lots of room to improve this. I will probably lower mine a few inches (avg brisket clearance) and drill a few drainage holes in the lip to reduce rust potential from water collection. Thanks again for the review tips
I'd have to agree with you. Makes bbqing easy. I've had a weber for the past 13 years and this is much more carefree. I find using the weber takes much more experience and skill to use.
Thanks for the honest, everyday person review, was debating my next BBQ & smoker purchases, combo, or separate stand alones, charcoal, egg, etc. Gonna take the plunge and get the 1050...
My wife and daughter are close to moving here to Texas with me. Normally I’d do a stick burner but it shoots the whole weekend and I’m out back watching fire all day. This seems it does everything and is still wood/charcoal which is primarily what I’m looking for. I think this is going to be my next pit. I reeeeeallly don’t want to do a pellet pit. They all just feel Chinsy and thin to me.
Did the same thing with the same response. Thing would weigh 350lbs. The char griller is having issues from what I've read. Really hard time holding temp i think. I want the 1050 design, couple modifications, made with quality materials.
I use my masterbuilt 1050 untill its time to wrap. For example cooking pork butt, ribs, or brisket i usually wrap to finish my cook. So once i wrap my meat i shut down my masterbuilt and throw my meat on my rec tec pellet smoker just to conserve on charcoal and pellet smokers are alot cheaper an more efficient to run. Plus when your meat is wrapped your not going to pick up any charcoal or wood flavors if your using foil. Just something ive been doing to save a few bucks. I love my masterbuilt 1050 and my rec tec 680. Both make great bbq.
I don't mind using the paper towel with oil method to light it. Works every time and doesn't require propane to light it. Less fuss, especially when you find your propane tank is empty.
Agreed there except I usually keep a few of these in the garage. That said. Masterbuilt would have to allow you to light the pit just in case you do run out of gas. Would be a nice upgrade on the upgraded model. Wai, appreciate the comment.
Very Nice Video on this grill. One (or both) thing(s) could be done to the shelf that is holding water: A.) Cover the grill when it's raining.... B.) Drill some holes into the face of the shelf to allow any water to drain.
Champagne design, beer budget. The theory of this smoker is fantastic, but their execution could use a little work. In their defense though, you have to save where you can to keep this in a price range that is more appealing to the largest customer group. With that said, it would be nice is they made a pro model with upgraded components.
I don't think you were not picking because they were simple problems masterbuilt could have prevented and you wasn't going nuts about them it's not the pit for me but I love watching you do cooks on it because can help someone else with the same pit and I always get great ideas for new recipes thank you
I agree, cast iron is a pain to maintain. Hope they go to SS. Also, I like the unit but I love seeing all the annoying items. I agree with you. Great job
Great Review Tommy. I agree with all your comments. I would also add that Masterbuilt could also upgrade the power cord and plug as it seems flimsy for outdoor electrical connections.
Spot on Review. I keep a small shopvac next to lower fire door so I can cleanup each time I OPEN IT. A modified ash grate could have a deverter on it to catch or deflect crumbs into bucket. I just haven't built one yet. Open to anyone who wants to try. The only experience you shown that I have not had yet is all the water on folding tray. I give MB a lot of credit for coming up with a awesome prototype for the future of backyard bbq'ing, but they need to have before the competition does it first and that is to make the Pro Stainless Steel Chef's Model that fixes all this stuff once and for all. Make it bullet proof in other words and I am in 100%. Till then my Model T 1050 will just flivver along chugging out Beautiful Blue Smoke flavoring all my masterful cooks . 👋😎👍👀 Thanks Tommy, spot on vid
Awesome response and much appreciated. Yeah, Im pretty much in for the l;ong haul on this bad boy. The only problem is, Does Masterbuilt wanna play with the big boys, or do they just wanna put out product and make money!. Time will tell.
@@thegalleryBBQ agree, if they are supporting the Green Egg witch I call a quality unit, why would they also want to add a sub product to the lineup. My hope is they are looking at these videos and taking notes. I can only hope, because the upgrade could put MB 10 years ahead of all the rest. We will buy it, so whats the holdup. They are for now in a lucky position and it's their race to win or give up as only a flash.
I replaced my MB 560 with the MB 1050 ... My local Home Depot in Mentor, Ohio had a display of them for $475ea.I called Luke at LSS MODS and ordered everything again like I did with my MB 560
Another great video. Thanks for being honest, yes there are pros but everyone seems to love it once they get it working correctly. Some great ideas to improve it but then the price would probably go up. That's what's nice, it's under $1000.
Spot on brother! There's a mod to bypass those p.o.s. switches which would most likely void your warranty, so I won't elaborate lol! The limited space in regards to the fold up table and the lid handle could easily be fixed by moving the lid handle higher up on the lid. Anyways, another great newsletter as always. And keep the smoke rollin' Tommy!
Thanks for the review. I've had the 1050 for a few months now and I've yet to get the app to work. I dont even bother with it at this point. Havent seen any issues with rust, but I keep it covered when I'm not using it.
It looks like it’s missing a drip pan to put some water and to catch the juices and grease from the meat, it will protect that heat defused from rusting and will keep a moist environment
Real great video so thank you. I’m torn as I do not see it lasting very long and some other reviews even show poor quality control. But I do not see any other gravity BBQs at their even at a premium price.
Good job Tommy. You’re often my go-to for recipes. I did a Killer Hogs vinegar sauce pork butt based on your video and it was awesome. I’ve had issues with the close switches and ordered 3 replacements because I believe they’ll continue to fail and need replacing.
Blow torch works the best for lighting. The upper shelf design is smart. They all fold away. Fold up middle back, fold down upper, and pivot and slide middle front back. My only complaint is fuel consumption. Thing eats charcoal and i use B&B. $$$. The folding shelf borders on useless. Build quality is typical master built. Wish grease drained better. Don't use the app. Causes problems.
Thorough review that's much appreciated as I'm heavily leaning towards getting the 560. I watch all your videos. Maybe it's me, but why not purchase the weather resistant cover to combat all the rust issues that you pointed out in your review.
Thanks Andre and thanks for supporting my channel. The only way to stop rust is by using material in the build that won't rust. some people even say that any cover you put on a grill will trap water/mildew/condensation and so forth. Keep me posted on your 560 purchase. Enjoy!
@@btwiitchell55 I see firsthand, now that I have my own. I’ve had mine now for going on a year and I see the rust. Even the parts the I keep protected with foil during cooks rust slightly. Thanks for replying.
Hey Ben, they are releasing the 1050 here in Australia in February, I decided not to get the 560 and wait for this (Thats why i am watching all these review vids)
It's the shit. I was skeptical. I've cooked on a stick burner since I was a very young man cooking with my grand daddy. Needless to say, I was set in my ways. A traditionalist. I got one of these yesterday. Cooked my first cook on it today. Short Ribs. Nothing fancy. Let me tell you, I'm a believer now. Didn't have touch the damn thing after it was rolling. I didn't know what to do. Was watching the temp looking for it to go out of control, but it stayed right where I put it. I even fell asleep man. That is UNHEARD OF in any cook I've ever done in my life. And them ribs were insane. Perfect smoke. If everyone learns about these damn things they'll all be cooking bbq like me. 😂 I won't be the go to for bbq anymore.
Cool idea for auto ignition but I'd hope they keep a version without it - those features are nice but not worth the price increase that usually comes with it (for me anyway)
OK Sr. I really appreciate your videos, very detailed comments, great breakdown for taking the time developing the videos halos a lot to all the ones just know we are trying to enter semi-automated grills So question for you : What should I get, Master build vertical charcoal or Pit-boss pellet grill??? Thanks.
Love the changes idea.. I think for price point what they have is fine where it is and offer a Masterbuilt Pro model with thicker metal and auto-ignite, better shelfs.. etc.
Great Video! After seeing this (like how you put out your honest opinion out there) i hade decided for MB 800 (was considering a pelletsgrill och an MB 800).
Solid overall breakdown! A couple thoughts: I found that adding double layered aluminum foil in the top lid did a great job of keeping that area clean. I haven't done any other "mods" but that one was a quality of life improvement. I'm also curious about the rust spots you've seen. Do you cover your grill often? I've had mine for 4 months now and it's been rust free but it's always covered or I bring it into my 3 season to keep it away from water.
The Gallery Backyard BBQ - Question: With the 1050 put together and if you wanted to take it somewhere would you be able to lay it on its back on a blanket in the bed of the Truck to haul or would you have to stand it up and strap it down > Didn't know if it would hurt anything laying on its back along with taking the grates out... ? Your thoughts would help - I am going to be buying one soon...
Hey Tommy,My meats seem too smoky cooked at 250?Do I need to let the charcoal ember a bit before starting? My understanding is you don’t wait for that to happen.Thnx.
This is a great video. I have been searching up over last month for my next grill here. And have zeroed it down to PB Pro2 850 vs MB 800. Considering both have auto control and searing featurses. As a new beginner into smoking, which grill would you recommend as a good versatile grill?
well this sealed the deal for me and thats keep using my camp chef !! way to many problems ! i clean out my camp chef after 3 cooks with no problems ...had my cc over 4 yrs and only thing i have done is replace the hot rod ! sounds like this thing has to many issues...
@@thegalleryBBQ I have to agree. I own the Camp Chef Woodwind non wifi. My neighbor got this and we cooked the same recipe for baby back ribs, his were so much better than mine sadly. Considering investing in this one now.
I'm really close to pulling the trigger on the grill. However I do want to see how the next ones have evolved. Does anyone know when new grills are typically released or promoted?
Awesome video. I'm liking this as well and thinking of buying.. kills me though if a year from now a 2nd gen drops and they fix a lot of these little issues. Just enough to piss you off lol. Did you buy? If so how are you liking it?
@@dmoneyakathatguy I did buy one. I absolutely love it. I did also buy the LSS MODS. The charcoal chamber mod and the screen vent are must IMO. My 3rd cook I forgot to slide the screen in and had a coal burn and melt the fan. It was replaced under warranty but took a while. ( fans are really tough to get )
I like your videos but i havnt seen you do a video with the 1050 rotisserie. I just ordered one today for my 1050. You should make a video with the rotisserie attachment so all of your fans can see how it works. Well tommy from southern Illinois keep up the good work!!
Jason thanks buddy and thanks for the support. When I was wanting one Masterbuilt was out. Maybe ill look into grabing one in the new year!. That said, LMK who you like it.
@@thegalleryBBQ my rotisserie is awsome. Ordered it off of amazon prime. I brined 2 whole chickens overnight and cooked them on my master built rotisserie and even the breast meat was sopping with juice. I was impressed.
Just a thought, do you use a weather cover for your BBQ ? I do and it keeps it from rusting and deteriarating, I love your videos and follow your cooks on this amazing 1050. I live in the UK and as you know we have a lot of rain so a cover is essential I think. I have loved the cooking on this it is a game changer for tasty food.
Do you think you maybe could place some foil precook on the drip guard that is rusting? Was wondering how cleanup is with this grill and fought rust in previous smokers with a little foil.

Place a baker's sheet pan below hopper area to catch residual crumbs and dust then dump or vacuum.
Not pic away, great job..... I agree with the cons..... Issues experienced....
Thanks Ray!
You are definitely not sponsored, great honest review!
I appreciate that! Nope. Thanks brother. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good stuff man! Been thinking about pulling the trigger on this. I think I just might now!
Dan. Its top of the grill charts! Cheers.
B & B will burn cleaner than Kingsford. Great video!
Thanks Travis.
I replaced my MB 560 with the MB 1050 ... My local Home Depot in Mentor, Ohio had a display of them for $475ea.I called Luke at LSS MODS and ordered everything again like I did with my MB 560
Enjoy!
Another great video. Thanks for being honest, yes there are pros but everyone seems to love it once they get it working correctly. Some great ideas to improve it but then the price would probably go up. That's what's nice, it's under $1000.
Awesome so glad you liked it. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Enjoy!
Love my 1050. Best pit I’ve ever owned.
I gotta agree. Thanks for the comment.
Just bought one today for 400 on sale at walmart. Appreciate your input

Greetings from the UK.
Great review on the 1050. I’m hoping to get one ordered today!
Keep Grilling!
Awesome pit. Thanks for your support.
Where you ordering from? (Also in UK)
@@cfcbeanz1122 Couldn't find it in stock in the UK so I bought it from the US and shipped it across the pond!
Love the honest review of the master built and certainly provided some excellent insights.
Much appreciated!
Cool, thanks and as always. Good luck;).....
Thanks for the review. I've had the 1050 for a few months now and I've yet to get the app to work. I dont even bother with it at this point. Havent seen any issues with rust, but I keep it covered when I'm not using it.
Yeah. The APP causes more problems then its worth. Thanks for watching.
It looks like it’s missing a drip pan to put some water and to catch the juices and grease from the meat, it will protect that heat defused from rusting and will keep a moist environment
I just purchased mine today can’t wait to smoke some ribs
5 hours no wrap @250f.....
Nice review! About the ash bin, when I take it out I give it a shake and ash falls to bottom and I pick out the few burned coals
Bob, Ill give that a try. Thanks and thanks for the comment.
Real great video so thank you. I’m torn as I do not see it lasting very long and some other reviews even show poor quality control. But I do not see any other gravity BBQs at their even at a premium price.
Glad it was helpful! check walmarts for sales on the 560. As low as 290.00. Thats a steal.
So far this grill is on my list to be purchase. I was about to jump on the pellet platform but waiting for charcoal temp controller like this one.
This pit will out cook any and I mean ANY pellet end of story!
beautiful grills the gravity series I love my 560
Bud, thank you. Proper helpful. If you're ever in Liverpool, give us a call. Semper Fi from an ex vet.
Cheers my man and thanks for your service.
That light knocking at 1:22 almost had me going to my door at midnight with a gun.
Its trippy! lol
Good job Tommy. You’re often my go-to for recipes. I did a Killer Hogs vinegar sauce pork butt based on your video and it was awesome. I’ve had issues with the close switches and ordered 3 replacements because I believe they’ll continue to fail and need replacing.
Thanks brother I appresate the kind words. Enjoy and hope to see you again.
Thanks, Brother! Great review.
Darren, Thanks. If you ever have any questions. gallerybbq@gmail.com
Great freaken smoker with details 👌
Thanks 👍
Excellent review Tommy. Li,ke the unbiased opinions!
Thanks! 👍
That about somes it up. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Enjoy!
I own that cover. I’ve used the grill twice and it’s allready started to rust ......nothing is gonna stop it from rusting
Likely just low quality steel. Should be stainless but I'm sure it would last a long time. Salt air would probably kill it pretty quick.
@@btwiitchell55 I see firsthand, now that I have my own. I’ve had mine now for going on a year and I see the rust. Even the parts the I keep protected with foil during cooks rust slightly. Thanks for replying.
Solid review Tommy, we know have the 560 in Australia and im going to get one early next year.
Ben. You'll love it. Its an awesome pit that can do so much!
Hey Ben, they are releasing the 1050 here in Australia in February, I decided not to get the 560 and wait for this (Thats why i am watching all these review vids)
@@paulgreen6497 i might hold off and check one too mate
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I really love the grill. He's right it's a great grill but I feel like you have to add all the mods to make this grill great.
I do not agree... Many people and I do mean most people add zero mods and never have a problem,.
Awesome post. Now that you know- ENJOY!
Cool idea for auto ignition but I'd hope they keep a version without it - those features are nice but not worth the price increase that usually comes with it (for me anyway)
Agreed!
Great review Tommy, very honest! I agree with the points here as well! I do wish I got the bigger model 1050. The 560 is just a *tad* too small!
Totally agree. I had the 560(loved it)but knew I needed the bigger pit.
epic review man, well done!!!
Thanks a ton brother!
OK Sr. I really appreciate your videos, very detailed comments, great breakdown for taking the time developing the videos halos a lot to all the ones just know we are trying to enter semi-automated grills
So question for you :
What should I get,
Master build vertical charcoal or Pit-boss pellet grill???
Thanks.
Oswaldo because ill have some questions to ask you email me. gallerybbq@gmail.com
Love the changes idea.. I think for price point what they have is fine where it is and offer a Masterbuilt Pro model with thicker metal and auto-ignite, better shelfs.. etc.
Im sure the next Gen will be killer.
Superb as always my Friend!!!!
Ellen, Thanks 👍😀👍
Great review. Molly said “ I smell smoke on your pants, but where’s the beef??? 🤣

@@thegalleryBBQ Cheers!
Great Video! After seeing this (like how you put out your honest opinion out there) i hade decided for MB 800 (was considering a pelletsgrill och an MB 800).
Make sure you subscribe and check out my newer 800 cooks. Amazing pit.
Solid overall breakdown! A couple thoughts:
I found that adding double layered aluminum foil in the top lid did a great job of keeping that area clean. I haven't done any other "mods" but that one was a quality of life improvement.
I'm also curious about the rust spots you've seen. Do you cover your grill often? I've had mine for 4 months now and it's been rust free but it's always covered or I bring it into my 3 season to keep it away from water.
Hi Justin. Yep My pits are always covered. Ill give that foil trick a look. I appreciate you for supporting my channel. Thanks-).
Nicely done Tommy!
Thank you kindly Tom.
I'm undecided between this device or a kamado... having to choose one which would be better for smoking?
1050 any day of the week.
Great video, but I am confused. Is it a grill or smoker or both? Where would you put the wood?
Both, See todays video on the 1050. That'll help!
If you ties the hood down I thin k you'd be ok...
Great honest review!
Thanks brother!
Hey Tommy,My meats seem too smoky cooked at 250?Do I need to let the charcoal ember a bit before starting? My understanding is you don’t wait for that to happen.Thnx.
Let the grill warm up to clean smoke before adding your proteins.
I’m here from the newsletter!!
GL my friend and thanks for your support!
This is a great video. I have been searching up over last month for my next grill here. And have zeroed it down to PB Pro2 850 vs MB 800. Considering both have auto control and searing featurses. As a new beginner into smoking, which grill would you recommend as a good versatile grill?
The Masterbuilt would eat that 850 for lunch. That is if you like more of a smoke profile. Any specific questions. Feel free. gallerybbq@gmail.com
@thegalleryBBQ ok will do.. thanks a lot :)
@thegalleryBBQ Hii Tommy, just following up here. Did you get my email? Would highly appreciate a response. Thanks
well this sealed the deal for me and thats keep using my camp chef !! way to many problems ! i clean out my camp chef after 3 cooks with no problems ...had my cc over 4 yrs and only thing i have done is replace the hot rod ! sounds like this thing has to many issues...
Enjoy. That said. The Masterbuilt will out-cook that camp chef anyday of the week;)....
@@thegalleryBBQ I have to agree. I own the Camp Chef Woodwind non wifi. My neighbor got this and we cooked the same recipe for baby back ribs, his were so much better than mine sadly. Considering investing in this one now.

I like your videos but i havnt seen you do a video with the 1050 rotisserie. I just ordered one today for my 1050. You should make a video with the rotisserie attachment so all of your fans can see how it works. Well tommy from southern Illinois keep up the good work!!

@@jasonhuggins7423 so the rotisserie is long enough to hold two chickens?
Just a thought, do you use a weather cover for your BBQ ? I do and it keeps it from rusting and deteriarating, I love your videos and follow your cooks on this amazing 1050. I live in the UK and as you know we have a lot of rain so a cover is essential I think. I have loved the cooking on this it is a game changer for tasty food.
I do! Also. I have a brand new 1050 sitting in the garage!! Once the weather has cleared ill be back to some 1050 cooks. Im pretty pumped!!

Do you think you maybe could place some foil precook on the drip guard that is rusting? Was wondering how cleanup is with this grill and fought rust in previous smokers with a little foil.
Tim. Just keep it oiled and Enjoy it. Its hard to prevent rust. That said,. We are goun strong 3 years later. Cheers
How is the quality of the steel used? Masterbuilt has a history of using thin cheap materials.
The 1050 is about the best pit you could buy under 1k....
For myself I'd rather light a paper towel once in awhile then have to keep a little propane tank around
