Why haven't the tenants applied for state or federal rental assistance funds and or waited until now? Landlords cannot continue to be forced to provide free housing. Especially small time landlords. All the people that normaly would have been evicted over the past 2 years will go first. The courts will be so backed up people still have time to get a second job for a while to get caught up. It's a terrible situation for all.

Hi Carol, Thanks for your question. We're hearing that many people didn't know assistance was available. And for those who did know, some are still waiting for the assistance to come through, which is part of the reason that the moratorium was extended again. It does seem to be putting a strain on everyone involved.

@Sagada Polk- Chez The couple in the video was receiving disability benefits but had those benefits cut earlier this year. They were unable to make their full rent payment after those benefits were cut and told us that's why they're concerned about being evicted now. We also had a story about unemployment benefits being cut last week. This might help answer your question: oklahomawatch.org/2021/07/16/oklahoma-cut-off-federal-unemployment-benefits-early-but-workers-are-struggling-to-find-jobs/

Two sides of a story. This is one side. Government left the other side the financial burden for the other side.

This is just one perspective. The full story on our website includes other perspectives, like a landlord who says building owners are struggling to pay their own bills. You can read that here: oklahomawatch.org/2021/07/23/oklahomans-fear-eviction-spike-as-federal-moratorium-expires/

@@oklahomawatch6793 thanks for writing both sides. Although from your article does show how management is not timely to tenant needs there is also the other side.
Landlords who are denied access to non paying and paying tenants into landlord property to make repairs. Also some tenants have been evicted and destroyed property thus reducing the warrant of habitability. Media does a poor job of reporting two way street. Often it’s the big ole property who is bashed.
Lastly rental assistance is for the landlord not the non paying tenant who is occupying not the tenant’s home but rental unit of the landlord’s property aka landlord’s home.
