As followers of Christ, we are called to live differently from the world and to avoid practices that honor things contrary to God’s will. Halloween, while it may seem harmless to some, has roots in pagan rituals, and many of its customs glorify things like fear, death, and darkness-things that are in opposition to the light and life found in Christ. 1. Avoiding the Occult and Darkness (Deuteronomy 18:9-12, Ephesians 5:11-12) The Bible warns us against participating in practices linked to the occult, witchcraft, and other dark forces. In Deuteronomy 18, God speaks directly about avoiding divination, sorcery, and seeking spirits. Halloween often promotes themes of witchcraft, demons, and fear, which go against the light of Christ. Ephesians 5:11-12 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Halloween's focus on evil and horror can draw attention to things that should be avoided. 2. Being Set Apart (1 Peter 2:9) As believers, we are called to be a "royal priesthood" and "a holy nation," set apart for God’s purposes. Participating in something that celebrates darkness or the supernatural can blur the line between living for Christ and conforming to the ways of the world (Romans 12:2). 1 Peter 2:9 reminds us we are called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light, and celebrating anything that honors darkness can contradict this calling. 3. Focusing on What is Pure (Philippians 4:8) The Bible encourages us to focus on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Halloween’s emphasis on fear, death, and the grotesque doesn’t align with these virtues. Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.” Halloween's focus on death and fear doesn’t reflect these values. 4. Protecting Our Children (Proverbs 22:6, Matthew 18:6) As parents or spiritual leaders, we have a responsibility to guide children in the ways of the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us to train up a child in the way they should go, and Matthew 18:6 warns against causing little ones to stumble. Allowing children to engage in Halloween can open doors to spiritual confusion, especially since it often involves themes of the occult or fear. 5. Celebrating What Honors God (Colossians 3:17, Romans 14:5-6) As believers, we are to do everything in the name of the Lord and for His glory. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” If we celebrate something that doesn’t honor God or draws attention to things He warns us against, we need to reconsider whether it aligns with our calling as Christians. In response to celebrating Halloween, it's important to ask whether it glorifies God and reflects the purity and holiness He desires for us. Instead, we should seek to celebrate the joy, light, and truth of Jesus Christ in ways that honor Him.
