I love that almost all of these are books I’ve never heard of before!! I feel like so many “book TH-camrs” talk about the same 10 novels, immediate subscribe 😭🫶🏼
the egg is much older than the chicken. it was the chickens ancestors that began amniotic egg laying. then before that it was just simple mitosis to create multicelled organisms. i have several copies of frankenstein too!
Caribbean writer i’m wanting to read but haven’t gotten my hands on yet: Maryse Conde. I own ‘I, Titumba, Black Witch of Salem’ which is about the Salem witch trials.
@fntine omg YES!! please check out dom casmurro by Machado de Assis (or any other works by him), Capitães de Areia by Jorge Amado, Vidas Secas by Graciliano Ramos... there's just so many! i can dm you with a few summaries if you'd like!!
Fantine! I’ve been a follower over on TikTok since late 2021! I’m so glad I double checked again to see your TH-cam is up. I’m 😅 about realizing you’ve been here since 2023. But alas, found you here. 🎉 -Sierra
in this house we take our fantine recommendations SERIOUSLY! brat + small things like these are currently sitting on my shelf waiting to be .... devoured .....
If you're interested in criticism of Kundera in relation to women, I recommend "Milan Kundera & Feminism: Dangerous Intersections" by John O'Brien. It's not the newest book, it's from the 90s, but I didn't find anything better tbh. I didn't agree with every thesis there, but generally it was interesting.
I got Vladimir like 2 months ago from a street library and deadass after this video I was gonna go listen to the audiobook but idk if I wanna anymore after hearing it’s like a reverse Lolita😬
I had the EXACT same thoughts on In Memoriam, it was written in that ao3 house style that’s very readable but endlessly frustrating, especially since it’s meant to be a period piece based on real writers (and don’t even get me started on the alleged Vera Britain parallels, Alice Winn should have spent less time in the Drarry mines and more time actually reading Testament of Youth)
I think Eurotrash is fiction, at least that's how it's labeled online. Per your request, the Caribbean writer I like most is Marlon James, especially A Brief History of Seven Killings. I interviewed him once and he was very nice/open to discussing his art. Definitely a favorite writer of mine. I agree with you on the "Lolita-esque" label. The one time I tried a book that was compared to it was Alissa Nutting's Tampa. It was entertaining enough, but Lolita is such a high bar. It often feels like a marketing gimmick.
Yes it is actually an autobiographical novel you’re right!! Thanks for the correction. I’ve been meaning to check out Marlon James, should I start with A Brief History of Seven Killings? It’s nice when authors are kind and open, sometimes authors come into the shop I work at and are rude and it seems like the most counterintuitive way to treat a bookseller. Absolutely agree on the marketing gimmick point, publishers gonna pander. The ‘unhinged woman’ trope has begun to feel similarly reductive. Need to read more Nabokov.
@fntine With Marlon James it depends on what kind of novels you like. A Brief History has the most acclaim and I think it will appeal to your interest in Caribbean literature because of the premise. If you like fantasy you can try his new trilogy series in the works.
I read and ADORED Vladimir. I don't agree with marketing it as a reverse Lolita, as Vladimir himself is much less important in this story. It is much more of an interior novel about the main character and her failing marriage and her tense relationship with her daughter. More midlife crisis less me want hot boy
Melbourne dweller located?? You should read Madame Bovary - a middle class woman from 1800s France spirals mentally as her adulterous passions get out of hand.
Ya I know, I have a mental block as I have relatives named Jean pronounced the French way and my brain keeps short-circuiting when I try to correct myself… I was raised with French and English and some pronunciations just stick, others are blended or strange… idk

You keep pronouncing Jean the French male way when the authors are women. Jean as in denim jeans.
