This Overlooked Point Break Is A Costa Rican Classic

- Boca Barranca was Costa Rica's first popular surf destination. Since the late 1960s, surfers have made the trek down the mountain from San Jose to ride waves at this classic left point break. And while many surfers still frequent this spot, most surfers have still never surfed this wave.
When the property directly in front of the surf came up for sale, we couldn't resist the opportunity to be part of Costa Rica's surfing history. We're currently fixing up an old existing structure, turning it into a handful of boutique hotel rooms. We'd like to revive the longboard surf contest that once called this place home. And who knows what else...

We are your next door neighbor at Boca Barranca Beach and Surf. Henry Ford, one of the owners was the organizer for the Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic. We are also hosting the adaptive surfing contest on June 18th-23rd. We should have you part of the event!
Best wishes, that's the place I was born. Lots of local and international history happened there. There's a legend of a guy who ride a wave for 4 miles in one of the biggest barrels ever witnessed, best of luck to you guys.
Score! Nice acquisition! Fantastic wave! First surfed it in the early 90's. The water has always be a bit toxic and the crocs keep you on your toes. But, I'll come stay and surf with y'all. Sign me up!

Like the video states, this wave was one of the very first places to have surfing culture here is Costa Rica, just is very much overlooked.

I entered the last Rabbit competition in 2001, waves fired for 5 straight days, as good as it gets.
I was there too back then. It was an amazing swell!!
cool ,-the spot I spent over a month in 1973. That first little bunch of rooms there was called Chenita"s. Those were the days of 2 points side by side, one super long slow one , and a slightly shorter one across the boca that barreled on take off in front of a rock face , and then turned into a backside Malibu into a sandy beach. I like the fact that you want to establish another world class log contest going there-such a good LB wave. Who Knows maybe that other point will come back one day. I think Rabbit's name should stay! Is Candino involved?

The Crocs freak me out at that spot! My first time down there was in 99 i went to Hermosa,and word was someone was eatin the day we arrived. Needless to say I skipped that spot, but geeezzzz what a wave😮

often you surf right out of the murky stuff into a long blue wall but not always. Depends on tide and rainfall totals
It's all good, but that stretch of coast can be quite polluted.

I was there during the Christmas holidays. I think the day I went to this property was just after the new year(2023) and the guys were working on it. I got a few pics of me in front of the Longest left signs. Unfortunately the day I was there the waves were barely knee high. I can't wait to come back surf that goofy footed wave someday! Been surfing this break for 22 years and have seen the lineup grow. I have friends who came to boca back in 69 and slept on the beach. I have to say that I have always looked forward to surfing here because there were no lessons, only the hard core would take the trip to stay and surf here. Even with the contests back in the day, Boca always stayed special. Never became a Saladita which is now ruined too due to lessons/retreats etc. Instructors pushing students in on waves surfers caught early down the line and will clearly make the whole wave. Surfing was never designed to be a money maker in my opinion. Yes the town needs love but a surf school is going to ruin this place. Lessons shouldn't be given at a point break. I've seen it too many times. Very disappointing

Nice video. I'm a goofy foot and like left point breaks. Is Boca Barranca good for fishy boards or mostly logs? FYI, I stayed at WRSC in Feb. 2013.
100% yes with a very good south swell it gets EPIC!!!! Last time we were there I surfed my 5'8" seaside at lower tide and then whipped out the longboard as the tide started to fill in. Its not just for logs !!!

Hey Amir, The project has only just started and we are not running a surf program or camp at this location. We do not have the same infrastructure at this location just yet, but watch this SPACE.
