I find that Young Thug’s albums are usually pretty consistent in sound and theme. Barter 6, BTG, Slime Season 3, Jeffery, SMF and now Punk. They all have very well defined sounds that they don’t stray too far from. Each has songs that branch into other lanes to keep the album from going stale since Thug has so many talents and can do so many genres, but for the most part they stick to a consistent sound. Thugger is really good at doing that and crafting albums to fill a certain niech in his style. People who want bangers have Barter 6, Slime Season 3, Jeffery and SMF. People who love melodic more pop driven Thug have BTG and Punk. He’s a really unique artist in that he can do so many different sounds in such a unique way and still have it feel very authentic and natural.
That’s probably Thug’s weakest point. He can’t string together an album conceptually consistent. I’ve listened to every album and tape of his dozens of times…dude doesn’t make conceptual pieces…there might be some very loose experimental direction through the album, but there is no consistency to that direction whatsoever. That’s also what makes his albums appealing to me though; I’m always being surprised each track.
You gotta watch the tiny desk concert he did. Had a live band backing him and I’m not sure but it almost sounds like the opening track was actually recorded and put on the album from that performance.
