    well, 'The Mule' is an interesting case, Deep Purple was all about improvs and individual contributions, ie soloing, and I love all that stuff. Much better than simply copying your LP on stage.
    I've read somewhere that they wanted to get rid of Paint it Black and so because they needed a new riff around the drumsolo, The Mule was put together. The main riff can be heard in 1970-versions of 'Mandrake Root'.
    So instead of writing a proper song and adding the drumsolo later, this was written the other way around

    I've been on a huge Purple kick recently. Are you going to do further live albums including Mk III and Mk IV?
    Also, how is Sam doing these days?

    and now purple are off and running, ritchie is now in charge , and its basically his band? but these days i have trouble listening to the twenty min improvs
