    As a coach, when your gymnast falls you usually see it coming before they even go for the skill, something just looks off so you're ready to catch immediately

    As a cheer coach, I have caught girls in so many situations to save them from getting hurt while taking feet, legs, arms, shoulders and heads to the face. But if every kiddo is safe, then I've done my job.

      Same, I got hurt so often from catching team members and I'm not even a coach lmao. But in showacrobatics we try a lot of new stuff we don't know is possible soo, it's normal that its not always working out.

      I remember a cheer coach gave a fun clinic to our gymnastics display team, most of us gymnasts were also gym coaches. The cheer coach commented he had never seen bases so committed to catching the flyer.

      Funny how Cheer always has the most amount of injuries out of any sport. Typically cheer coaches are former cheerleaders with little experience in actual coaching.
      Most teams go to a gymnastics center to actually learn how to tumble. The Cheer coaches need to learn from gymnastics coaches how to actually coach.
      Typically its the former gymnasts that make the best cheer leaders and the best coaches are former gymnasts who became coaches.

    • @twistymcfistysback
      @twistymcfistysback 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @AlyFrederi absolutely. 20 years of watching the same cycle of horrible coaching with so many girls being told to "F%$&K it chuck it"
      The cycle wont be broken, it will just be another bad cheer leader becoming a bad coach again and again.

    As a coach it's not fun to have to catch. But you do what ya need to do. Both Gymnast and cheerleader have made me bleed on more than a few occasions. But they all have walked away unhurt thus far. Biggest thing you can do is make sure the athlete is ready for the skill before you put yourself in a hairy situation where you, them or both of you get hurt.

  • @moxylady007

    I had someone catch me when I went hurdle. It was honestly way too early for me to be attempting the skill they wanted me to try. I had no notion of my body in space - I just couldn’t feel it. The spotter who grabbed me wasn’t a coach. She was absolutely shaken. And angry. I think because she was so scared and surprised that I just blaaahhhed it. She kept saying oh my god you almost broke your neck. Oh my god you would have died or been paralyzed for life. Oh my god. She went and walked it off. And that was my last day of gymnastics. I didn’t feel that my ability level was being considered in trying new skills. They just had 20 or 30 of us who had started at the same time and expected us all to progress in the same ways at the same time. I was doing things these people couldn’t and I was the first on a bunch of skills. But having never done this or anything leading up to it and then being expected to land the jump and somersault without prep.... it was like a factory pushing out gymnasts. Not keeping us safe. That one coach grabbed that girl is almost exactly what happened to me. Scary.

    I was doing a crash dive (lol) barani ball out on tramp one time. The coach who was coaching on the double mini was thankfully standing nearby to catch me as I almost fell off the side of the tramp. I had one foot on the mat covering the springs, but my momentum was carrying me off. It would've been a controllable fall, but I'm glad he was there to catch me. I don't think I'll forget that for as long as I live! I also feel like there should be a better way to maintain safety during a trampoline event. Usually it's a few mats on a basketball court. My former teammate was a junior elite trampoline competitor and had someone severely injured before her at a meet. It really shook her up. Maybe surround the tramp with more dense trampolines which are covered in pit mats? I dunno. But falling from that height with little room for error is so scary. I'll stop rambling now. ❤

    When I do this, my girls have to say "Thank you Nicole for saving my life." I then (this is before covid obviously) proceed to give them a sloppy kids on the hair to defuse the situation and make them forget their (completely justified) terror. Shoot out to my fellow coaches! We throw ourselves (often literally) in the way of human missiles and we like it! 😁

  • @lucygrayson6034
    @lucygrayson6034 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I wonder what they were trying to do with the mat with Laura (female trampoline) because the edge of the mat hit her foot and caused her to go completely off balance and shoot off toward the other side. I know they throw the mat on for cushioning usually once the final skill is completed to start softening the jump impact, but if the spotter wasn't there it could've been so awful!!!!!

    On the tranpoline ones, it should be like a thick layer of memory foam around the trampoline itself and on the floof.

  • @mark1226
    @mark1226 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a kid I did trampolining and I have had one or two near misses especially doing a front drop. I'm 5ft 8 and the trampoline is easily over a metre off the floor so just stood on the bed I am higher than a basket ball hoop then jumping I could at least get a metre or so above that and when you open out to land you have to make sure your in the centre or near as. One time I was off centre and came down and my head just narrowly missed bouncing off the edge of the trampoline, which consists of a metal bar and a very thin bit of padding.

  • @adamcolin589

    I had awful gymnastics coaches when I did gymnastics as a child and a teenager and they didn’t prepare me for skills I’d never tried before and was terrified to do which is why I decided I couldn’t do it anymore and walked away and since being at cheerleading it’s been actually the opposite they’ve been such good coaches in teaching good technique for tumbling

    I've never done anything like this, but as a trampoline coach I had a gymnast double back and then ping backwards, but the setup we had had the trampolines in the corner of the gym so I was stood there to stop them hitting the wall. It wasn't great for my own back though, as I ended up being crushed against it instead
