If your views of robots tend to be based on black mirror and terminator, just for a moment - imagine the possibilities robotics can bring. OK - someone will use them for something bad. Yes there will be military bots, despite UN opposition to them. Yes they are goner tookerjerbs in some places. That's been true throughout history, and it sucks. Then we adapt. New jobs emerge. Maybe you're thinking in terms of what you DON'T want robotics to be. "Dont be skynet". OK fine. But what do you WANT a robot to do for you? No, not that, mind out of the gutter please. What about onsite medical aid, 24/7? You have a crash, there are bots there immediately to tend to you. Remote transportation - you are lost, hiking in the hills. You might die. You press a button and a human lift capable drone comes to find you, unhindered by whether a human SAR crew is available. Robots that can care for the disabled or old (it WILL be you one day) in their own homes, giving them independence. What about something simpler? A personal assistant robot that can help you shop, or go and fetch you food or find a table for you. What about a telepresence robot linked by VR that lets you be at any show or event in the world, then go have dinner in your own living room? Maybe its all only for The One Percent? Maybe it won't be. Possibilities. Robots have brought car manufacture back to countries that had outsourced to cheap offshore labour. Even tesla recognises you can overautomate and human abilities are needed. Automation can drive down cost so far that products that would have been dollars now cost only pence. Every downside has an up. What robotics can do for us is mind blowing. Regurgitated paranoia, internet clickbait and dystopian stories actually stop people from thinking and dreaming, and when that happens you are only left with the shitty options.
Big Business (including Big Tech) has made it clear that pretty much everything they do and develop is in the interest of their own profits. Onsite medical aid 24/7? Maybe for the military and obscenely wealthy; no way will the average citizen be allowed such benefits. Look at the robots that exist now--yet we still have firefighters running into burning buildings and trekking dangerous terrain to extinguish wildfires. Robots should have (and could have) taken over those tasks years ago, but since it's cheaper to use humans, the investment isn't made. Only when it's *profitable* for big business to do something that's genuinely in society's interest will they (and government) actually invest in doing it. Otherwise, they'll do what they want, and engineer technology that causes harm to the masses, but makes big bucks for the executives and shareholders (ethics be damned). Make no mistake: This robot dog thing was funded by DoD...just like everything in Silicon Valley once was (and mostly still is). I think, Google has access to more pictures than Facebook. They have scraped whole Internet. But those petabytes of images are useless. Yep, only think plural. About 40 of them coming at a time. Each one is only trivially armed or armored (a bit of Kevlar and carbon fiber, maybe double-gauge aluminum over sensitive parts). Maybe a stun gun front and back, maybe four bullets each to shoot. But they're a pack of 40 running on a local area network using swarm and pack logic. 40 bodies, one mind, one target, YOU. And they have 20 more eyes overhead with the armed drones flying around.
it certainly WILL be frightening and WILL happen but I don't know about 40. Maybe in a full scale war. In a police capacity I can imagine a SWAT team like configuration of these things. They'll be programmed to run elaborate plays with prefigured "plan B" fall back provisions as well. (robot voice) "run away!"
Cheetahs can run 60-70mph. I can't physics that well, but maybe with the prosthetic blades athlete runners use after they lose a partial leg below the knee.
I think it's just easier for it with it's joint configuration, if you have ever had, or at least watched a real dog, they go up the stairs bounding, and then are laughably inept at going down them. Of course part of it its just fear, but it's also harder to physically do.

Small, retractable, electric wheels on the feet is definitely doable. That or wheels that can even morph from wheel to foot pad mode. With magnets. Pls. i think what 'it' processes is just electrical data - not some visual image as seen in the video. that image is solely for the purpose of helping us (and more importantly, those who are operating it) 'see' those data in a convenient way. otherwise we would have to say that it has visual qualia, which seems absurd to me. at this stage, at least.

Boston dynamics made BigDog which was supposed to be used in the military to carry supplies, but it was abandoned since the robot was too loud. we need silencers for our robots
On the battlefield? That's a stupid idea. The idea of bigdog was for transportation, and that's fine. But actual weaponized machines will not be worth it. If we're sending robots onto the field, the enemy is probably doing it too. Unitree Go1 has that feature, it just follows the label remote attached to your belt. Spot could be programmed to do so I bet, but I never seen a video of Spot following a person.

No, description says "QR codes are used to measure performance, not for navigation". So it's probably just fallback dev tool for logging timestamps. If you remove them navigation will still work.

I always get surprised by the comments saying tech is scary under these videos. I get that most of them are meant as a joke, but even so It's not conceivable to me how this could be scary, I simply can't wrap my head around it, all of the machines made by this company could easily be beaten to "death" by my grandma with a broom. Not only that, but as a programmer, to me this idea that a robot could revolt or something is... ludicrous.
It's the fact that defense companies are funding this shit, so you KNOW they're weaponizing it. Imagine this thing running after you with permission to shoot attack you. Very impressive. What kind of computer vision techniques does the robot use to generate the map? What kind of autonomous navigation algorithm does the robot use knowing that it already has a map previously obtained by manual control?
+Wolframe I'm sure of that, but I think without going into too many details they could give some explanations about the process that the robot carries out, beyond the description of the video.
Funny thing is most of this is also being used in video games; navigation maps and local collision avoidance. Engineers can learn from each other and apply similar ideas.
AntonioR Software it's way easier to define movement in the internal coding in video games than this though. They have to use some complicated kinematics calculations to make sure all the legs balance properly and provide the desired movement for any situation it assesses that it can safely make it past.
Remember, all it is is just an inanimate object with a set of complex instructions working together to move its motorized parts and simulate awareness of its surroundings. Under the appearance of accomplishing these tasks on its own accord. It’s simply another unconscious computer like any other, but is programmed and made to utilize its energy to perform the tasks you’re seeing now. Albeit, I’d gander in a random, undetermined fashion. Tasks coded and engineered directly into its firmware. Nothing more, nothing less.
I would personally agree with you that this robot isn't "conscious", however it could be argued, perhaps, that its cognition is at a higher level than, say, a starfish. As robots and artificial intelligence get better, robots will continue to be "objects with sets of complex instructions working together to move its motorized parts", but it will eventually become difficult to argue that they are not conscious. I don't think we have the right to consider ourselves the arbiters of consciousness unless we can, at the very least, produce a definition of consciousness that _we ourselves_ are happy with. The day will come when no outward test for consciousness can disqualify a robot from the ranks of conscious beings.

Yep, only think plural. About 40 of them coming at a time. Each one is only trivially armed or armored (a bit of Kevlar and carbon fiber, maybe double-gauge aluminum over sensitive parts). Maybe a stun gun front and back, maybe four bullets each to shoot.
But they're a pack of 40 running on a local area network using swarm and pack logic. 40 bodies, one mind, one target, YOU. And they have 20 more eyes overhead with the armed drones flying around.

I think it's just easier for it with it's joint configuration, if you have ever had, or at least watched a real dog, they go up the stairs bounding, and then are laughably inept at going down them. Of course part of it its just fear, but it's also harder to physically do.

i think what 'it' processes is just electrical data - not some visual image as seen in the video. that image is solely for the purpose of helping us (and more importantly, those who are operating it) 'see' those data in a convenient way.
otherwise we would have to say that it has visual qualia, which seems absurd to me. at this stage, at least.
The 'perception' was just a visualization for humans; nothing to do with how it actually interpets the data.

RepartusS This is too good of a technology for a capitalist nation to only use it for militaristic needs. This type of tech would be used heavily as purchasable androids and or other means of transportation robots that could do things for you.

On the battlefield? That's a stupid idea. The idea of bigdog was for transportation, and that's fine. But actual weaponized machines will not be worth it. If we're sending robots onto the field, the enemy is probably doing it too. So all your doing is wasting the money of both sides by having them destroy each other, it would probably even be comical rather than serious!

Unitree Go1 has that feature, it just follows the label remote attached to your belt. Spot could be programmed to do so I bet, but I never seen a video of Spot following a person.

No, description says "QR codes are used to measure performance, not for navigation". So it's probably just fallback dev tool for logging timestamps. If you remove them navigation will still work.

I always get surprised by the comments saying tech is scary under these videos. I get that most of them are meant as a joke, but even so It's not conceivable to me how this could be scary, I simply can't wrap my head around it, all of the machines made by this company could easily be beaten to "death" by my grandma with a broom. Not only that, but as a programmer, to me this idea that a robot could revolt or something is... ludicrous.
It's the fact that defense companies are funding this shit, so you KNOW they're weaponizing it. Imagine this thing running after you with permission to shoot attack you. You could easily mount a gun on here to kill hundreds of people, and when it finally is destroyed, the suspect is never seen or harmed

Very impressive. What kind of computer vision techniques does the robot use to generate the map? What kind of autonomous navigation algorithm does the robot use knowing that it already has a map previously obtained by manual control?

It uses a lidar (lazer based radar) to map the surrounding. For the map position part I guess that it justs follows a given path using a GPS system.

Funny thing is most of this is also being used in video games; navigation maps and local collision avoidance. Engineers can learn from each other and apply similar ideas.
AntonioR Software it's way easier to define movement in the internal coding in video games than this though. They have to use some complicated kinematics calculations to make sure all the legs balance properly and provide the desired movement for any situation it assesses that it can safely make it past.
I was just talking about environment mapping and that kind of stuff. The actual kinematics to move a robot is a completely different topic of course.

Remember, all it is is just an inanimate object with a set of complex instructions working together to move its motorized parts and simulate awareness of its surroundings. Under the appearance of accomplishing these tasks on its own accord.
It’s simply another unconscious computer like any other, but is programmed and made to utilize its energy to perform the tasks you’re seeing now. Albeit, I’d gander in a random, undetermined fashion. Tasks coded and engineered directly into its firmware. Nothing more, nothing less.
I would personally agree with you that this robot isn't "conscious", however it could be argued, perhaps, that its cognition is at a higher level than, say, a starfish.
As robots and artificial intelligence get better, robots will continue to be "objects with sets of complex instructions working together to move its motorized parts", but it will eventually become difficult to argue that they are not conscious.
I don't think we have the right to consider ourselves the arbiters of consciousness unless we can, at the very least, produce a definition of consciousness that _we ourselves_ are happy with. The day will come when no outward test for consciousness can disqualify a robot from the ranks of conscious beings.
