- (19 Apr 1994) South Africa's key political leaders reached a last-minute deal on
Tuesday (19/4) allowing Zulu chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi's Inkatha
Freedom Party to take part in the country's first all-race
elections next week.

de klerk, sot: "we have reached agreement this morning which will
result in the participation in the election of the IFP throughout
the country .. amendment of the constitution. parliament will be
called together on monday. there will (also) be a mediation
process after the election. this agreement removed one of the last
main causes for tension and violence in the republic of south
africa. buthelezi sot: "the IFP central committee decided at a meeting to contest the elections if amendments to the constitution were made
to secure the kingdom of kwazulu and the future of his majesty the
king of the zulus. also conditional on .. mediation. i spoke to
his majesty and president of the ANC. i am therefore pleased to
announce that the IFP will contest the elections."
mandela sot: "nothing is more urgent than the possibility that by
making this process all-inclusive (we may get) all political
parties to take part in this election."

It was concuded from the inception of these negotiation that the demand for exclusive rights and previlages awarded to the Zulu monarchy could be favouralable grounds to instigate fued btween the two focus groups (ANC and IFP). On the other hand the communist party led by Chriss and popular undetured leadership at the time.Was outright opposing the dominiering agenda pushed by the NP but was met with hostility from IFP whom were promised security only on premise that they weaken all oppositionat to drive the outcome of the codes negotiations
