- Sunset summer drive around Amsterdam, Venice of the North, in the Netherlands. Known for canals, bicycles, Heineken beer, house boats, Van Gogh, coffee shops of a certain variety, the neon light districts.. So much more to the city and the Netherlands in general. The term Venice of the North refers to various cities in Northern Europe that contain canals, comparing them to Venice, Italy, which is renowned for its canals. The architecture is amazing. Narrow tall homes (a good reason for this...article in the comments). High standard of living as well. I'd love to live here for a while.

Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands with a population of 872,680 within the city proper, 1,558,755 in the urban area and 2,480,394 in the metropolitan area. Amsterdam's main attractions include its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw, the Anne Frank House, the Scheepvaartmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Heineken Experience, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, NEMO, the red light district and many coffee shops. It drew more than 5 million international visitors in 2014. The city is also well known for its nightlife and festival activity; with several of its nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) among the world's most famous. Primarily known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled façades; well-preserved legacies of the city's 17th-century Golden Age. These characteristics are arguably responsible for attracting millions of Amsterdam's visitors annually. Cycling is key to the city's character, and there are numerous bike paths.

The Port of Amsterdam is the fifth largest in Europe. The KLM hub and Amsterdam's main airport, Schiphol, is the Netherlands' busiest airport as well as the third busiest in Europe and 11th busiest airport in the world. The Dutch capital is considered one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with at least 177 nationalities represented.
A few of Amsterdam's notable residents throughout history include: painters Rembrandt and Van Gogh, the diarist Anne Frank, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.

I'll always love a city where pedestrians and cycles have the right of way and its actually respected.
And where the proper infrastructure is built to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians unlike these garbage American stroads that are horrible for ALL modes of transportation!
its amazing how smart the traffic lights in amsterdam are. Notice how the arrows will only open for the turn that has cars waiting!
You don't see green waves but you see very short wait times and various lights just turning green as you aproach.
The most bike/pedestrian friendly in the world also cares for drivers confort... this city is truly something else.
London just installed smart lights. The traffic is much smoother than last time I visited.
They also have some really nice roads. Hardly any potholes from what I can see. I live near Boston and their roads suck.
Its not the most bike/pedestrian friendly city in the world. A lot of cities in the Netherlands are more bike friendly

Kudos to you for driving here. I have a few years ago and not fun when its busy and few "hundred" bicycles everywhere you turn. The tour of the Heineken brewery was great if you can get the chance. To add, also check out the Art Museums, fantastic!

Very Nice you did Amsterdam, to be honest the inner city core is not carfriendly and I do think that's good, we use bicycles and the public transportation within the Amsterdam roundway , (the A10 motorway) is very good organized.

Os prédios constituem-se de térreo e três andares. Tenho a impressão que ficaria perdida quando saísse, sem saber em qual prédio estaria hospedada, caso perdesse a numeração. Mas são todos lindos de fato e, o número de bicicletas dá para suprir todos os habitantes. Apesar de ser o país de Van Gogh, não vi museu ou galeria
referente ao mesmo. Também senti falta do comércio, bares, restaurantes, shoppings, parques... Mas é um lindo país. Obrigada.
