I have FH. My numbers are scary high >400. I can’t take statins because it causes me muscle weakness and pain. I’m trying to change my lifestyle habits as far as diet and exercise but I’ve had this since my early 20’s. I’m 58 now. Heart disease is prevalent in my family. Every day is a gift.
I have a question about FH, I was wondering if FH is something that someone has for a lifetime? I would assume that is the case given it appears to be genetic. Though maybe there can be an environmental trigger to turn on the gene later in life? I ask as up until the last couple of years my blood lipids have always been great, good LDL range, high HDL, within range total, etc. Yet the last two have been higher than the Dr likes and they told me I have FH, the problem is that I have had 30+ years of normal cholesterol levels and it's only as of late that I've had it this high. I am currently 55 yo. I was expecting that it could be somewhat high as I'm doing a keto type diet but it was much higher this last time than I expected so I'm interested in figuring out why and if I need to do something. Another issue was that I had a xanthomas around my eye way back in my 30s or so, yet at that time my cholesterol was within normal ranges and was never told to go on a statin. I am not asking for medical advice, just the basic understanding if FH is a lifelong thing where if I had it I would have had very high cholesterol all my life? If you cannot answer then could you point me to a good resource to learn more and understand what might be going on here?
Excellent discussion Doc! Never knew that there were that many genetic variations related to FH! Thanks for this video..... 👍👍😉😉 Hope that you are doing well.......
I was diagnosed with insulin resistance in my 50’s, I was diagnosed with FH at age 60 when my LDL went over 380 (on a low carb diet), and started on a statin. Recently I stopped the statin because of cognitive side effects. I eat very low carb. My cholesterol went through the roof. Even my triglycerides and blood sugar went up, although they remained in “normal” range. I agreed to go back on Crestor twice a week, but feel like Im between a rock and a hard place. I have a family history of both CVD and Alzheimers, it’s like having to choose between my heart and my mind. 🤷🏼♀️ I’m hoping the twice a week dosing will spare both. (I’ve also increased low my low carb veggie intake.). It’s a challenge to navigate both.
@@directajithRight now I’d love an LDL in the 200’s. I’m now in daily crestor but my LDL is still over 500 and medication side effects have returned. 😕
Very interesting vodcast! I'm considered hyper-responder and might be FH according to Dr Ford. My trig/hdl ratio is 0.86 with 0 CAC. I will keep a look out if there are any negative issues with having high LDL. My grandparents were long lived over 97+ with one living to 106. I never heard them taking statins.
If one's LDL in middle age (let's say 45-55) isn't remarkably high (let's say it's 130), does a diagnosis of FH make sense? No genetic tests were done? Thank you.
Recently GP suspects FH. Cholesterol 8.5 Also have inflammatory arthritis and tend towards insulin resistance Just started statins Am 60 UK resident Non smoker Zero alcohol consumption Not obese, BMI 23-24 Should I have a gene test?
Truly appreciate your style. To the point factual acknowledging lack of perfection in human beings oh, and Medicine. I've looked at the webinars, and seriously considering a consult with you. My issue with the way you have your system setup is that it's only one console. That to me is lacking a follow-up.
Can you pls tell me the best alternative for FH other than statin? I tried one but the muscle pain was horrendous, I had no choice but to stop taking it. My ldl is 306? I’m a single parent and leaving her alone in this world is my greatest fear. My Dr knows that I stopped taking the statin but has not suggested any other treatment. Pls advice me ? Thanks
ok.. Doc Type 1 diabetic since 2001 5,7 feet 72 kgs Carnivore - keto diet ( A1C 4.8 as of april 2021) I have FH LDL Cholesterol always high ( april 2021 = 264 mg/dl ) HDL = ( april 2021 = 74 mg/dl ) triglycerides = ( april 2021 = 105 mg/dl ) What should I do? I thought not eating carbs/sugars etc.., eating meat and a bit of keto and taking Niacin should be enough. ALso finding out about my small dense LDL-c ... What should I do then? thanks
You should see someone & clarify whether FH or lean mass hyper responder. You can see me by calling 859-721-1414. LDL >180 is usually FH. Most of my FH patients have (or develop) greater risk from IR.
I appreciate you going in as geek level as possible. This stuff is interesting.
I think I need to get tested for this, my LDL is high.
Thanks

My ldl is 208. Is that considered hypercholestromia?

Excellent video Dr Brewer. Thanks!

Thank you very much for the information

Doc - what do you think about rejuvenate (CaAKG, or even Arginine AKG) for lipid management?

The vast majority of of our patients have an ongoing relationship. Very few people get a 1-time consult.
@@PrevMedHealth I will follow up with an inquiry. I am interested in a overall evaluation of my past medical history and plan for the future.

We usually use statins & PCSK9i (like Repatha) for FH.
