excellent..."tasty"...reminds me of an early time in my life on the GULF COAST, and visiting NO, The Quarter and the NO JAZZ FEST...GREAT TIMES, so GREAT MEMORIES !!
From a "dixieland" standard, one of the best recordings I have heard. Hank Williams would be proud. What a shame he was completely lost in alcoholism, drugs, and chasing women considering some many of his songs written, song, and crossing into some many genres of music then and today.
What a cracking version of this Hank William's classic - and one that includes the usual thoughtful and beautifully musical playing of that recently-deceased reeds genius, Ian Wheeler.
I agree - You cant replace one great artist with another. I saw Chris Barber live in Stockholm about this time. It might be the same concert. I also bought a signed record by him then and spoke a few words. I just checked that I still had the record.
Yes... Sabor a New Orleans con el bass tocando antillean cadence... Buen gusto, excelente color...
Saw CB in Berlin first the big band, muted applause, the his trad/New Orleans, result?thunderous applause. The lp barber in Berlin 1952? First class ,it appeared the audience in Berlin remembered 1952.john j Sidcup.
This is him at his very best, there is one of another artist that beats them all/ It takes twenty just to listen to one side, of course I have it on LP. You might want to give a listen to "The Hucklebuck" by Buck Clayton or the alternate side "Robin's Nest"
+Michael Foulds Don't rely on being told..Learn how! Get the key in your head (or keep playing the video.) Get a reed, trumpeter, t/bone, bass, banjo, piano to compare it and find the concert key... This is in C major concert...for banjo, bass, guit., piano. For Tpt/Clrt & t/bone, it will be in D major. Alto/baritone sax will be A Major. If you are hobby players..good luck but you need to get this task 'under your fingers' as a 'next job'. Crucial skill without which you can hardly proceed. After 55 years playing...I'm shouting for you. Did one gig in 70s with Barber's trumpeter...Pat Halcocks.
***** Stick at it.. It's practice... Some people have 'Perfect Pitch'..combined curse and blessing.' I don't have Perfect Pitch but do have good relative pitch which is far more useful. It means that I can compare notes for musical matching but can't name it/them. As a result, I am comfortable with a guitar that has been tuned "to itself" not concert. Of course, all is lost when another instrument is included. A blind, piano virtuoso friend , can name the key in an instant and identify a key change as it happens. At best, I can hear ..up/down a tone or a semitone or a minor third if the wind is blowing in the right direction. Good luck...Good playing.. Hope that you progress beyond hobby playing. M.O.L.
It was a Hank Williams song first recorded by him in 1952. Several other people covered it before Fats Domino in 1961, Joe Stafford, Jerry Lee Lewis and Brenda Lee amongst them.
Barber at his best. Excellent solo by Pat Halcox
For me the best sound of Jambalaya. Chris Barber given us the best way of New Orleans style Jambalaya

I remember Brenda Lee singing this in the 1960s at a concert... long ago huh?
Pretty well everyone has performed this at one time or another!
Years and years playing together, yet never any improvement. Quite remarkable.

to jest właśiwa muuuuzyka
Chris Barberm Jambala
They used to call me Dr Jambalaya
I'm sure that Fats Domino is good, like all Domino numbers are but there is a special with Barber.
It was a Hank Williams song first recorded by him in 1952. Several other people covered it before Fats Domino in 1961, Joe Stafford, Jerry Lee Lewis and Brenda Lee amongst them.
Que delícia!
barber Chris
