  • Age and extreme cold can combine to reduce your car’s battery capacity dramatically, and driving in the dark for more hours each day during winter places an extra strain on your electrical system. To avoid being left out in the cold, Cars.com’s Matt Schmitz provides a rundown on how to jump-start your car in this week’s segment of Driving Smart.

Remember the time John Conor jumped on the 1-800-terminator and jammed a screwdriver in his brain and started to eat his RAM so that he could be more intelligent, but actually he just ate arnold schwarzeNATOR’s cooling fan and thermal paste, so terminator had to jump on t-John-Conors back and they ran to the arcade to hack into one of the pinball machines to acquire the necessary components, and just as they were about to, none other than that big silly WOLFIE comes and tackles both of them to the ground and eats the RAM out of Maria Shriver’s husbands’ head and becomes super intelligent and tells them both that they have to go kill that black guy who invented Skyrim, or at least make him do a kamikaze-chest-bomb-sit-down in a building full of policemen while holding the detonator and then told him to die right before he blows everybody up. I remember saying “wow” when I first saw that and someone in the theatre told me I had to leave because I was sitting on the floor blocking the fire exit with tickets to the wrong movie (Glengarry Glen Ross).

Dead Red to Donor Red, Donor Black (which can be on the battery or engine block bare metal) to Dead Black engine block bare metal. Wait 30 seconds both vehicles off. Then 2 minutes with Donor vehicle on, then turn on Dead vehicle, run for five minutes, both cars on. Then shut off donor vehicle, keep dead vehicle running. Take off cables in reverse order. Drive dead vehicle for at least 15 minutes to charge up battery before turning car off. The Black cable doesn’t have to be attached to either the dead or donor battery, just engine block metal is sufficient.

Her response was, "thanks Dad, but if I'm ever in that situation & I'm stuck on the road & I do things myself, you're gonna be mad that I didn't call you for help".
I had to think for a minute bc she's right, but I told her that I'm not always gonna be here for u & it's good that u know how to do things for yourself.

Some things should be learned/practiced before you need them. If you haven’t yet, changing a flat tire before you need to know how to change a flat tire is well worth 30 minutes of time actually performing the steps and change the tire. Like where the jack and spare tire are located in your vehicle, how to safely operate it, correct order of steps, etc. Seriously will be well worth doing a practice run.

Dont be nervous but just make SURE you're connecting the + to the + and the - to the -.
Check it as many times as you have to just to make sure. Have whoever you are with check it as well.
      EVERY CAR IS DIFFERENT.
I just jumped my girlfriend's friend's car and it wasnt clear on the + and - and it sparked on me and I realized that it was marked you just have to look CAREFULLY. Just be safe.

I had a buddy of mine need a jumpstart. I followed these steps but it didn’t work. Then a passing cop turned up and moved the cables around and it worked. They moved the positive cable on the good car to another bolt and the negative cable on the bad car to a more flat surface. I knew all this but I really suck at jobs with my hands so it didn’t go so well for me.

I have 2 questions: What if it's closer than 18 inches? What would happen? And when u said remove the cables in reverse but in the video is different, the last step is black cable on bold but when u remove it's on battery, why is that?

  • @Wannabearborist

Can someone explain why the cable gets grounded on a piece of metal instead of on the negative pin of the battery, I always learned to put the black cable on both negative terminals and the red one on both positive terminals and it always worked

When I attached the black end of the cable of the non working battery to a bolt it wouldn’t work. Once I switched it to the negative side of the dead battery it worked just fine.
    Hope that helps

Some questions for anyone that can help! 1. Why don’t you connect both negatives to the batteries? 2. Is there any chance you can get shocked since the second negative is connected to the bolt? 3. So you do + dead battery, + good, - good, then bolt on dead car? Then the exact reverse to remove?

I've heard you can damage a car by connecting directly from battery to battery. Is this true or just an urban myth as I know lots of people that do that without amy problems.

    • @MrPancake777
      @MrPancake777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Most of the time it won’t cause any problem or in some cases an explosion, but there is still a VERY small chance that it cold happen.
Most of the videos I’ve seen on TH-cam and mechanics I’ve spoken to in real like agree that why risk the chance?
Best and safest way is to not connect it to the negative terminal on the dead battery.

If you attach the negative clamp to the battery it could cause damage but probably wont just safe precaution. Jump starting someone's car takes a lot of juice but it's only once so it's no biggie for ur car. Just dont do it often hopefully u dont have to.

I've seen videos that say not to jump start a dead vehicle until shutting off the doner vehicle
    other wise the two vehicles
alternators work against one another. Is this true? Like in other words charge the dead vehicle's battery with running doner vehicle but don't start dead vehicle until powering off the doner vehicle.

I'm reading the instructions and it says First determine which post is grounded to the chassis, positive or negative and that determines which you ground. It could be negative or positive in the dead car. Not addressed here

  • @BrennanKoontz

What’s the problem with leaving the car running? It’ll be easier for the dead car to start with 14V than with 12V, especially with potential voltage drop in the jumper cables.

This might be a dumb question but is grounding to anything metal the same as grounding to the negative? My whole life I was told either or. But now that I'm looking at "instructions " alot of the time it tells you to ground to the engine block? Curious if there's more advantage or what.
