Childhood Rangers fan here, this Aberdeen squad was great, loved watching them from this period til say 1992/93. Some really great memories of great matches between Rangers and Aberdeen in the League and Skol Cup Finals. Proper football. Miss those days...
Those league Cup finals made that tournament a lot better back then they were epic games, Young people still look at me funny when I tell them those years the most important games were Rangers v Aberdeen
Under Smithy, we really should've won more silverware. That was a fantastic squad he built. Had it not been for an excellent Rangers side, Aberdeen wouldv'e been the dominant force in Scottish football, and wouldv'e cleaned up. It was so far more competitive at that time. Dundee Utd were an excellent side too, Hearts were stuffy, Hibs were decent. Even teams like Motherwell, or St Mirren always put up a fight. The 3 Skol Cup Finals are arguably the 3 best domestic Finals i've ever seen. It was 2 quality teams going out to win the game. There was no hanging back, looking to take it to extra time, or trying to sneak it 1-0. It was 2 titans slugging it out. There wasn't a lot between the two teams generally, the games were always close, with no quarter given, but those 3 Finals were on another level. As you say, 'proper football'.
Charlie, Charlie or theo theo or one wilier Miller were the 3 main players songs that year. I so wanted to go to ibrox at the end of that season but only 500 dons got to watch it.
My first full season going to home games and European tie v dresden and league Cup final as well as going to Scottish Cup tie at dunfermline where near 17000 fans where watching and the replay had over 21000 then a full house v united at Pittodrie in the next round which was a mammoth tie with three games 2 at Tannadice which I couldn't go to i remember it as the season of Snelders for winning player of the year in his first season as well as all the games I went to.
This was the period before Rangers came in and spent millions for years purchasing titles , and also cheating the tax authorities, every title they won in that period should have been stripped
eh no ; they started spending millions when souness came in , and totally changed the face of Scottish football quick eg - Paul Rideout approx 1 mill signed as a striking replacement for injured mark hateley - who wasn't out for too long i recall - it s not like they didn't have a big enough squad to cover ; and then there's andy gray ...... not about money ; just a bit of a joke really
@@IndieVolken not too mention rangers buying any good player any opposing team had. Sneakers for example went to rangers and sat on the bench for the rest of his time in Scotland.
The 80s aberdeen were an iconic club. The all red strip was a sight to behold and as a celtic fan i could name every player in their side every season until the club went into decline in the mid 90s. Scottish football is a shadow of its former self unfortunately. The support is still there but the Bosman ruling, the signings of third rate foreigners, sky tv and the souness millions ruined the game up here and all we have now is a boring two horse race. I miss the old aberdeen, dundee utd and hearts. And of course the dundees, hibs and motherwells of this time were of a high standard too.
