From from being a non certified coach to certified I highly recommend getting certified , I feel a lot more confident and better organized , plus being in a fraternity of knowledgeable coaches can only help one grow as better coaches
PTR called me and gave me a big discount. In the certification I learned a lot about coaching that I currently use in my lessons. So I’d recommend it. However, don’t let it stop you from moving forward and coaching students you can start where you are at now.
Hi Ethan, I don't think it is controversial but I think if we want that our business of tennis to have some credibility, certification is a must. Especially at the beginning. Playing great tennis help tremendously but does not make you a teacher or a coach. Now if you are looking at the Lendl or Becker of this world that get hire by top professionals I agree. They provide a specialized service to some specific athletes that you will never get in getting a certification, they do not teach or develop players. Learning how to have basic progression, pedagogy and organize a group is a must if you will start to teach and coaching. The cost is not a valid point because you recognize the need of insurance which will be about the same. Beside in many country you will not be able to coach at any club if you do not have certification. I will say though that certification does not make you a good coach either it goes beyond that. Coaching is an art that takes long time to develop, our sport is getting more and more complex. Coaches need to stay inform and question themselves consistently to stay on to of their game and through your certification you should be able to stay inform. I am sure there is people that has no certification that can be great coach and teacher, but there is also some complete wack job guys or girls out there that should not be with kids and adults.
Thanks for your response Yves, you made a lot of great points. I agree that just because you get a certification doesn’t mean you’ll be a great coach. It’s your ability to grow and develop players to where they desire to be.
I'm always skeptical of people with no competitive background in tennis that get weekend certifications. They are often 3.5s or 4.0s that can't demo all the key strokes. Always look to see how their students play if they have no background. There are exceptions sometimes.
WRONG - paying fees each year is not required to maintain certification. With the USPTA, once you have received a certification, you are certified. You never lose this certification. Paying your membership fee simply means that you are up to date and has mantained your certification. USPTA will validate you are certified even if you are no longer a member.
