    Get a pipe bracket on the riser near the top of the tank. The wobble on the pipe when the pump starts will eventually weaken it near the bottom, and then when it breaks, you'll literally be in the s@#t

    You know you're getting older when your body says, is it really worth the pain and you start listening 😊
    Don't knock your organisational skills, I can't imagine how complex it must be to build a new parlour, while still having to stay on top of every other job on the farm, and do it as well as you do.

    😮wow! That's a full slurry tank for sure. Maybe call a neighbor to see If they could use a few loads until you're ready to put it on your field's? Just to get it down a bit.
    Glad to see the cow's back out on grass again. 👍😊

    Love seeing the focus on grazing. Paddocks are definitely the way to go over strip grazing. Getting the cows off a piece right away makes a HUGE difference in terms of getting regrowth going. I have to say an area where your dad, for all his deep knowledge, has perhaps not kept up with recent innovations.

    Paddock grazing RULES! We did it over 50 years ago on 60 acres. We had a creek running along one side of that field and we strip grazed running perpendicular to that water so we didn't have that problem. We divided the field in 3 using an electric fence - one wire on re-bar 'posts' and grazed - I think we had about 20 cows with calves and another herd of 10 or so Angus with calves that belonged to a neighbour. We grazed for 2 weeks on 20 acres and then moved them onto the next 20 acres for two weeks and the next 20 acres after that for 2 weeks. We then moved them back to the first 20 acres that had had a month of recovery and started over again. We probably could have grazed more, and more intensely on 10 acre segments and giving it a longer recovery period as a result. It was an experiment on a field that we had a choice of taking a second cut of hay bales or renting it for grazing. Getting a second hay crop is risky as the weather starts to turn and often gets rained on and as we already had enough and more hay in the barn...

    Great job Tom. Can’t wait to see the paddocks. It doesn’t have to be expensive. One strand of electric wire and stakes every 12 feet makes it cheap. Mains fencer In the shed closest to the paddocks and hook your reels to it. Water troughs in the middle of each wire that will serve 2 paddocks and lay the pipe on the surface of the ground along the wires. Doesn’t have to be buried. Makes it cheaper again. Get that slurry spread on the paddock the cows just came off. Will shoot up after it. 🌱🌱

    We always used to take a screwdriver to test the fence. Lay the rod on the wire close to the fence pole and bring it in until it sparks. If it doesn’t spark you know it’s not working. Heck of a lot easier on the hands.

    I worked on a 400 acre dairy farm about about 25 years ago we had a mains electricity fencer round most of the fields. It was fantastic for sectioning up the fields into grazing paddocks using horse electric fencing rope. Just used to clip to the main electric fence. Mind it had a hell of a kick! They only touched it once!

    Loving your channel from over here in NZ Tom, always gives me a sense of Kiwi pride seeing Gallagher and Strainrite products turning up different corners of the world. I actually came across an Irish product a few months ago at the local farm supply shop that has made checking hot wires so much better, called a Boundary Blade. Has a built-in volt meter and fold-out blade like a regular knife with a few slots for turning smaller nuts and bolts.
    Not affiliated in any way (I'm just a hobby farmer living vicariously) but thought you might want to chase one down to save having to zap yourself every time you need to check a fence.

    • @johnoconnell3842
      @johnoconnell3842 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to be contrarian but Gallagher have made poorly designed products for a long time….and probably made a fortune off it. Cannot believe there’s so little competition that their poor products are tolerated. Examples you say? Pigtail posts that blend in with the grass(fluorescent anyone?). Gap handles that come apart(metal hook thing falls out of its housing…even when brand new), we also have had 50 ish reels to install temporary fences. All invariably fell apart or the integral and critical plastic pieces broke(hook part, peg to lock the reel). Disaster of a company.

    • @johnoconnell3842
      @johnoconnell3842 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whoops, almost forgot one…..the ultimate tool(it remotely pauses the fence so you can repair, restarts it and in theory gives a power reading. Costs €400. The most unintuitive piece of kit I’ve seen in a while. Three “dairy farmers” can’t figure out when it’s on, what it’s doing or what the symbols and buttons represent. couldn’t make this stuff up….not about us haha, just horribly designed
