In 2008 I was living in Russia, teaching at schools and privately tutoring kids in their homes. That job had me taking metro rides and walks from near Red Square to suburbs that look like Soviet doomer screensavers, come rain, shine or snow. There was lots of snow and no snow days. -40 below and their apartment was a 15 minute walk from the metro station? You needed the money more than the tips of your fingers and walked the walk. For Emma, Forever Ago was one of the perfect soundtracks to that time of my life and those walks. Once, on a beautiful December evening, the snow was falling perfectly. I was walking through a sleeping district in Polezhayevskaya, barely another soul in sight. Snow has been shovelled into waist high mounds along the sidewalk. Nothing but the snow-covered yards bathed in apricot steet lights, bounded by Soviet blocks to the right, and the empty street to the left. I came upon a Kiosk, wrapped in blinking Christmas lights. It looked so perfect amid the solitude and urban decay. Flume was playing in my headphones. The Christmas spirit of home filled my soul. But I was also infused with the immediacy of the moment. Here I am, an American in Moscow, seeing things I never thought I’d see. So much has come and gone since then. The Russia I knew is lost. That version of me is lost. But the music, and the hidden corners of the heart it touches, remain.
Amazing how music can do that isn't it? However, is it lost? I don't believe it is. It's a part of you now. When you recall the memory, do you feel happy? Hopefully you do. Holocene makes me feel the same way. It makes me think of when I was young, filled with the wonder of the world. Cold Autumn and Winter mornings in the early 80's. Life was so much simpler. We all had so much less, but were still perfectly happy. My parents were young, my family was big. So many great people. Warm knitted jumpers, the changing of the seasons, the wind and cold. Amazing. Most of my family are deceased now. However, I moved to the countryside where the changing of the seasons is amazing. Now, the Geese are coming in for the North, the colors of the leaves, the crisp cold mornings, a coal fire. The only thing missing is my family, but the sadness is not one that overpowers the happiness. I love to listen to music like this, and remember my childhood and family with joy. They are still a part of me and always will be. In actual fact...... we are all part of each other.

I think, like a lot of people, I’ve let myself get a big lost in recent years. But there is a way to reconnect, just as you described, and I hope I have the courage to, and patience, to do just that. Sometimes we just have to listen to our hearts because the mind can play tricks on us and be insecure but I believe people can change for themselves without feeling someone else is pushing them you are the only one that makes that decision with faith and the guidance of God anything is possible believe in yourself and the time will come when you are ready 😘🙏🫂
Thank you so much for this. I'm going home today for the sentencing of the man who killed my brother. Your music has stuck with me through my entire life, and to get new songs at this particular time in my life feels like a powerful gift and a blessing.
