Carlo seems more pleased with a lot of those foods than I expected! I feel this way when I go to a Greek festival or almost any Greek restaurant (with one or two exceptions) in the US. Not necessarily awful, but almost never really right either. The Americanization almost always involves 1) greater size, 2) unnecessarily rich or oily preparation (with the exception of olive oil…they skimp on that!) and 3) use of easier/cheaper substitutes for the parts they require some extra work. But at the same time, these are people who have done what they can to keep traditions alive far away from the homeland, and for a lot of that time, the genuine ingredients were either unavailable or prohibitively expensive. It’s a different reality here and they also deserve respect for what they’ve managed to hold onto, and the ways they’ve been able to adapt. Anyway, it was a fun video and I’ll look forward to part two!

And what they do to gyros here…a friend calls it “Greek Spam.” 😅 You literally cannot find anything like that in Greece.
When I came to the US I got mad, I will argue with the restaurant people and told them they should not use the name Italian, I was really outraged and I could not understand why they were allowed to do this... at a point, I realized it was a battle I could not win and I gave up.

My husbands family is italian and in America they were in like Jersey and NY. And they call a certain red sauce..Sunday gravy. It's not just regular red. They cook it with a bunch of meats in it. 🤷♀️
