This is a ridiculously old video that I stumbled across, but your drumming acumen is second to none for your time that you recorded this. You do realize that these drum parts were overdubbed/done by 2 drummers. You managed to consolidate them into one (thus doubling your pay on tour!) Brilliant work man! Glad I stumbled on this video!
Great job brutha! Not only did you play it accurately but you broke it down, slowed it down, and TAUGHT it perfectly. Lots of people can play but they cannot explain/teach it. Great job!
That "Nuk Nuk" is actually a rimshot on the Linn LM-1.The LM-1 has about 16 pads and it can also tune up & down each instrument. So in the event you were using the Linn, you would play the rimshot & tune it down. That's the sound you would look for on a song like "Let's Go Crazy", "1999"-- really, just about anything Prince recorded between 1982 and 1984.
Wao!!! Thank you . I do not have the ability to do that ever.. but was wandering for years how this drum beat was made. You make it looks easy but it is not. Certainly you must be a great teacher. Love your video and Thanks again.
I am using the Roland TD20 as my main kit module but I am getting the special sounds out of an Old TD8 Module that is also connected to the kit. When I am playing 80s music I take both modules to play live...I used to have an old Yamaha DTX v.2 and I would sometimes go out with all three modules on this kit. I would love to get my hands on an old SDS 8 or 9 kit. Prefereably the 9's because they were midi. Thanks for commenting the vid. BzB :-)
awesome drummin man!... keep the funk alive! i'm not a drummer but i do play guitar, as much as i love drums, drumming with all those sets looks so difficult! but man you make playing 'oh sheila' look so easy! again great playing!
I was so glad to find this and at long last to hear someone explain one of my favourite songs from back in the day technically - and the "Nuk Nuk" sound. I love the explanations and I do hope you will stick with that
Excellent! I love your band's name also and I couldn't think of a better name if I was to name my band as I love funk. I don't know why, my favorite genre is synthpop but when on drum my dream is to become a great funk/hip hop drummer! Congrats!
Thanks for checking out my vids and taking time to comment. I actually did this vid before I did 777-9311...this was one of those songs that we had always wanted to play but we were afraid to try to jam it live because the drum part really fills the song and it was very busy. Then I sat down over the period of about a week and devoted my spare time to the beat and setting up a kit that would work for it. This is what we ended up with. You can hear our version on my MySpace page. BzB :-)
That was very good. You picked a great song to play and you have done it well. Thank you. And don't listen to any of the negative comments. Keep doing what you are doing, playing great music.
Thanks for the great comment. I absolutely love the SDS-8. I started playing electronics back in the day of the Synare Drums. Then went to SDS-8...then SDS-9 and eventually on to Roland TD-7 when it first came out. I do not have them anymore though...I would love to play on your set. Are you thinking of ever selling them? BzB
Bazy nice stuff mate, I always wondered about the possibility of sounds offered by electronic drums. Thanks for opening up our minds to all they have to offer. Great stuff and keep it coming.
thanks again JCFreak...It is nice to see some people out there sticking up for those of us that try hard to make the internet a place of learning and caring. BzB :-)
you rock dude i love how in all of your videos u say ''hi drummers and drum fans, this is bazybeats live on video from tampa bay'' u really good, appreciate ur tips
Yes...I used to use a rack mount Roland sampler way back in the late 80's with my Simons SDS 9's. I did some really crazy stuff with that thing. I was unaware of this SPD-S pad you speak of. I am going to do some research on that. I would love to get back to letting the creative juices flow with a sampler. Thanks so much for telling me about it. BzB :-)
You are looking at a hybrid of the Roland TD20 and the Roland TD8. I basically expanded the TD20 by adding the TD8 to it with an additional 4 pads. I hope that answers your question. If you want to know more then let me know. BzB
I am glad to hear that you got a chance to get into the life of electronic drums. Cool as hell aren't they? This kit is a basic TD20 with the addition of some extra TD8 and TD7 pads. I have 4 extra pads on the kit I have also hooked up a TD8 brain to this kit to get some of those older sounds used in the 80's. I talk about that in this vid. BzB :-)
@boingboomchak Actually, I found out after the video was made that the sound is actually a Lindrum cross stick sound. There are many kits that have similar sounds if you play around with the settings. Mine is a Roland TD20.
Thanks for the feedback Thecrazyacey...I am glad that you dug this vid that much...I will give that other song a listen...not sure if I have ever heard it. BzB :-)
Oh...thanks...Thats cool...more drumming then...Yes indeed. I just bought some new toys too. I now have a Korg Triton Keyboard and a Korg Mini Keyboard to go with my Korg N5EX. I enjoy playing keys almost as much as I love drumming. Thanks again for the translation. BzB
thanks for the comment mee...It was a tough beat to master but I enjoy pulling beats apart and figuring out how I can get away with playing them live without assistance. I have actually been sent the sounds from the linndrum that makes this Nuk Nuk but now I have to go out and get a sampler to load them into. Niether the TD20 nor the TD8 have that actual sound. Jonzun Crew used the sound at regular speed in alot of their stuff. Thanks again for posting. BzB :-)
That drummer was Gerald Valentine...I had a chance to see them play at Disney World In Orlando Florida back when this song had just been out a few months. BzB :-)
I tend to practice new material a lot like you show here. I often leave out the bass beat or other misc stuff until I get something else worked out. You make this look way easy though. Great sounds.
Dude this is a perfect roll out of the Oh Sheila shed! Let me put you up on game.... Being that I played with RFTW and have been in the recording game in Flint, MI with Bernard Terry and out in Edina, MN with Flyte Tyme Studios..... That "NUK NUK" sound you refer to is actually from the original Sequential Circuits LINN DRUM machine. Prince used this and so did RFTW!
I will have to look into that one. Thanks for your comment. I will get back to you after I have a chance to listen to She's a Maniac again. I have not heard it in years. BzB
I am glad to hear that you liked the vid. Many people get frustrated with me because I take so much time to explain things. They do not understand the importance of learning when people take time to teach. BzB :-)
I'm not a drummer...but i think i could learn by watching you. Excellent class. The Nuk Nuk is just a tuned down side-stick I think. I used to get pretty close with an R-8.
Thanks for the complement...I have given it some thought but have not had the time to get one started. It could be something that I will rethink for the future. BzB ;-)
Hey Stevey...I have this thing down to a science...since time is money where ever I am playing I have to be able to get up and running within 20 to 25 minutes tops most times. I can definately meet that time limit with this kit including all the extras. BzB :-)
Hey reditreefrog...I have had this set for almost 3 years now and none of the triggers are anywhere near wearing out...plus I dont hardly ever go through a stick. I finally broke a stick that I had been using since I bought the kit. It took almost three years to break even a stick...I have not gone through any bass drum beaters either. Oh and disco is from the 70's...Thanks for stopping in and commenting...keep checkin them out. BzB :-)
@RMNCOfficial I would have to agree with you on all points. I really love the beats and kits that came out of the 80's. Sheila E will always be one of the greats for me. Sorry I did not get to respond sooner to your comment...I have just been really busy trying to get up and running again with more videos. TTyl. BzB :-)
oh shiela looks more complex than i imagined! funny when i was a kid,& heard this for the first time,i thought it was prince''singing about shiela e'' lol : ) nice set up''
Cool...I am glad you liked it that much. I dont have any plans in the near future to do any clinics...I do teach lesons here in my house though. BzB :-)
Thanks for the feedback. There are several ways to attack this beat...so now that I have you on fire...you may even come up with your own style of playing it. It usually takes someone to bust it open. I have had some private sessions with John Blackwell and he has done that for me on a few songs already. I may get more opportunities to sit with him and learn. I always end up doing it my own way...but he opens the beat up for me and I can see it much more clearly. BzB :-)
Hey RideCrash...I dont have a DTExplorer...I have a Yamaha DTX v.2 but it is old. I will have to check on that for you the next time I am at the music store and can look at one. I will get back to you on that...BzB :-)
Its truly inspirational that you found a way to play all the parts, especially since the parts are so different. Still have those Simmons drums?! If so you should put a vid up. I have an SDS-8 set, shitty as they are theyre unlike any other drums and have a very unique rebound. Its so great to see passionate electronic drummers who give the instrument its due credibility.
Hey, that's really good. I'm a major Prince and RFTW fan. The "nuk nuk" sound comes from a Linn Drum machine. It's actually a tuned down rim shot. dude, I really don't know the song you're playing, but I like your drumming a lot, sounds very nice and groovy. I am not a big fan of electronic drums, I don't like them very much but you make them look VERY interesting, great job and 5 stars :P
That's awesome my friend. You see idk if I have the "Nuk Nuk" sound on my pads. I'm using a YAMAHA DD-75, ALESIS Perc Pads (discountinued) and KAT Multi Pads. But that "Nuk Nuk" sound does has the sound between Prince, Ready For The World, and others and that's what type of music that I'm mostly into.
Yes...sounds like a fun bunch of drums. I would love to have an SDS-8 or 9 brain again. I remember on the SDS-9 you could buy chips with different sounds on them. Man we have come so far since then. I am glad that I can say that I came up through all of that. I think it made us better drumers as we watched the technology emerg. BzB :-)
thanks so much for the support and for watching my back. I did not even get a chance to see this guys comment and I guess so many people gave him thumbs down that it automatically took his comment down. Whatever he said must have been very disrepectful though...so again...thanks for watching out. I apprecaite the complements and loyalty to what I am doing here. BzB :-)
Yes...I find that if I force myself to listen to different types and styles of music then I grow as a musician. Glad you liked it. Thanks so much for sharing your comment. BzB
ooh! so that's how you do that! i've been wondering if there was any way to get a busy sound w/o multiple laid tracks. (although it would help if my set had many an extra piece ;) lol
@SanderGuitar97 I thought I had responded to this question but looking back it does not look like I did. The answer is that it depends on the kit you have...or rather, I should say the module you have. My TD20 module has 4 additional inputs for whatever you want to add. BzB :-)
Awesome bazybeats! I used to sing lead on that song back in the day with my band in Hawaii. Never saw any drummer in my life pull that off live!! The 'nuk nuk' sound was actually a rimshot sound tuned way low on the classic linndrum. I'm sure you can recreate it on the Roland module. Great video!
That is the coolest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you. Because of great feedback like yours in comments and in e-mails I had been considering that in the back of my mind and I may actually do it at some point. I am a High School Math teacher during the day and I am simply applying the same techniques I use to teach math...(Except the Slo-Mo LOL)to teach the song. Thanks again...please make sure you subscribe if you have not already. BzB
That is actually one of the best complements I have gotten in a long while. Usually I get accused of speeding up the film on some of my more intense beats like the ones you will find toward the end of my "Left Side Versatility" video. Check that one out if you think I am faking here then you will definately be convinced that I am faking there for sure. BzB :-)
Thanks Sapper...I came up with that method of playing this song because we never use tracks or sequences in the bands I play in. When "The Funktion" decided they wanted to do that song, it took me 2 practices to come up with this. There is a lot missing in this beat but you dont miss it because I am filling all the gaps and playing hard the entire song. BzB :-)
I think this is really awesome how you had to grab at each and every part. This is a very complex beat that I never would imagine to be so complicated, great job!! Later for the haters!!
Thanks for letting me know that the vid inspired you. That is my pay for doing the vid...the good feeling of knowing I helped or motivated someone. BzB ;-)
Thanks for the nice comment. Being a hater is sad. I never got to see that guys comment...but I am pretty sure he is now stalking me. I think he has been getting new accounts with different screen names so he can continue to talk trash. I dont understand what he gets out of it. I like to try to make friends and not treat people like trash...I would rather share info. BzB :-)
Thank you so much for that feedback matyfigure...I appreciate everything that you have said here. It helps me to know what vids people are liking and which ones I should steer clear of in the future. BzB :-)
A Brain is the Central Processing Unit of the drum kit...it is a box with a computer inside and all your sound samples. I hope that helps...If you need to know more just send me another question. BzB :-)
This is a ridiculously old video that I stumbled across, but your drumming acumen is second to none for your time that you recorded this.

+rex erickson I know Ready For The World sings "Oh Sheila". What I said was the "nuk nuk" sound is in almost every song Prince recorded in that era.
+Matthew Olden
legal ,Blessings
I was going to say didnt prince only use original sounds from the machines ...
Come back to this video every now and again, amazing stuff.
Thanks for the positive vibes !!!
All jokes aside man you really killed it! You are a true talent on the drums man....
Wao!!! Thank you . I do not have the ability to do that ever.. but was wandering for years how this drum beat was made. You make it looks easy but it is not. Certainly you must be a great teacher. Love your video and Thanks again.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks a bunch for the great positive comment. I am glad you liked the vid.
BzB :-)
That was pretty cool man! I am not so much a fan of the sound and style (80's type stuff), but I enjoyed seeing something new and unique!
WOW, sounds really cool! THANX!! I just started drumlessons, so...
Thanks for the feedback Thecrazyacey...I am glad that you dug this vid that much...I will give that other song a listen...not sure if I have ever heard it. BzB :-)

I've never noticed the closed hi hat. Awesome review man 👍👍👍
Thanks for the great comment...I am just getting in from 5 days in Atlanta...sorry I did not have internet access at my hotel. BzB :-)
Thanks for the complement...I have given it some thought but have not had the time to get one started. It could be something that I will rethink for the future. BzB ;-)
very good explanation... congratz
keep on drumming!
Hey Stevey...I have this thing down to a science...since time is money where ever I am playing I have to be able to get up and running within 20 to 25 minutes tops most times. I can definately meet that time limit with this kit including all the extras. BzB :-)

Wow!! Great Sound
I know absolutely nothing about drums, but I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Its so great to see passionate electronic drummers who give the instrument its due credibility.

ooh! so that's how you do that! i've been wondering if there was any way to get a busy sound w/o multiple laid tracks. (although it would help if my set had many an extra piece ;) lol
The Nuk Nuk Sound is actually a Linn Drum side stick tuned down. I used to own a LD and I miss it dearly!
@MayerEO Yes...it takes a lot of pieces to get stuff where you want it. BzB :-)
....And folks, There u have it!! Good job man, drummer to drummer, Good job!! keep up the good work.. :-)
Don't know this guy.... but he is AWESOME!!!!
@SanderGuitar97 I thought I had responded to this question but looking back it does not look like I did. The answer is that it depends on the kit you have...or rather, I should say the module you have. My TD20 module has 4 additional inputs for whatever you want to add. BzB :-)
@lampofootball23 It is the Roland TD20. BzB :-)
Thanks Id4u...Nice to hear from you again. BzB :-)
do u need a special double kick for electric drum set plz tell me
Awesome bazybeats!
Pretty awesome man Great job!
damn. I got that song off iTunes and I always thought that would be a crazy song to play in the drums, and it is!
That is the coolest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you. Because of great feedback like yours in comments and in e-mails I had been considering that in the back of my mind and I may actually do it at some point. BzB :-)

There is a lot missing in this beat but you dont miss it because I am filling all the gaps and playing hard the entire song. BzB :-)
Thanks again...I will be putting some more informational and drumming vids out soon.

BzB :-)
I appreciate the comment...thanks. BzB :-)
Thank you so much for that feedback matyfigure...I appreciate everything that you have said here. It helps me to know what vids people are liking and which ones I should steer clear of in the future. BzB :-)
Interesting word choice "Sound Clones" I like it...what is the exact definition of this new term? Thanks for the comment!!! BzB :-)
Yes...on a linndrum machine...I have actually had people out there send me the sound file for use in a sampler. Thanks for the comment.

A Brain is the Central Processing Unit of the drum kit...it is a box with a computer inside and all your sound samples. I hope that helps...If you need to know more just send me another question. BzB :-)
That is the way I like to roll...no sequencing, no tracks...just pure drumming in creative ways to make it all sound good. BzB :-)
