Years in a fiberglass shop has given me such beautiful PTSD that I can smell and feel this video. Seeing you cutting and sanding with shorts and short sleeves on made me itchy.
Hahah yeah, it's always a toss up for me whether I bother sweating like a pig in overalls or if I just have a cold shower to get the fiberglass dust off when I'm done. Some of it is just laziness though lol
I was working also a long time in a shop where we were doing exactly the thing he was doing here, but for me, it's not itchiness. For some reason, i can smell the epoxy for the carbon vacuum infusion every time when he opens some type of resin 😂😂😂

I'll be making these kits for sale as soon as the rest of the moulds are done. I've already got a dozen or so people on the waiting list, a handful of them have even started sourcing GTR bumpers and bonnets for the conversion.
@@TofuAutoWorks Glad to hear that. I was thinking that it's a shit ton of work for only one bodykit. Put Im glad people are buying this from you. Your work is awesome
Just my starter 1.0, 1.4 and 1.8mm HVLP set I got as an apprentice at a paintshop and then an additional 3.0mm gun specially for spraying thick gelcoat. Nothing too fancy.
If you put too much gelcoat on and it pools in the sharp corners, then it can chip off as the gelcoat is brittle. But as long as you design the mould to avoid sharp edges then the moulds are incredibly strong. The fiberglass on them will almost never crack
Idk if you're open to suggestions and trying new products, but i'll give it a try, there is a Polyester Primer from a company called Evercoat that has a guide coat "built" into it, it sprays pink but when you sand it turns grey to reveal high a low spots, it is called Evercoat Optex Super Build, i would like to see you play with that a bit, of course, that is if you can even find it in your country and if you can justify buying it.
The annoying part is there are actually a few evercoat products that I really wanted to try but as you guessed we have a pretty limited range here in NZ and a lot of them are classed as hazardous chemicals so importing them isn't possible. The stuff I've got gets the job done but yeah I do get a bit jealous of all the better options there are elsewhere
love your work man, i follow u since you finished the fastback miata, and i always wondered if its hard to fabricate a functional hardtop from scratch. I'm in the east europe and hardtops here are rare and expensive, i bought a miata and i tought i could fabricate one. i would start playing with fiberglass but on smaller parts first like the trunk or a fender, but will a hardtop be hard to make?
Hey mate, awesome to hear you're keen to work on some fun fiberglass projects. A hardtop I would say would be a pretty big job for a beginner but not impossible. I can't say whether it will be hard for you or not since that comes down to experience, but if you watched the hardtop build series I did and it all looks pretty easy then go for it! My main advice would be to avoid working in hot weather, so maybe leave it for winter as these larger projects to tend to set pretty fast even when mixed at the slowest cure rate and if it's your first attempt you'll want to take your time.
thanks for the advice, i actually have a garage here where i could work, my main concern is failure, so id start small with fiberglass. Also i wondered if i should directly make the fiberglass part or a mold would be better?

Sanding with 2000 and above wont really remove any material unless you use a machine sander but it will round over any sharp edges which is actually preferable with moulds.

Changed it to fit naming conventions. R35 front on an M35 rear. Sta-GTR would mean a stag front on the R35 rear. Skygeas are already a common thing going all the way back to the hako skyline front on a WC34 so even if it's not technically a skyline, it still fits in that family.
