    A Casio TV 880 turned up when we recently de-cluttered the office, and I adopted it for no particular reason. I did see the "audio/video" jack but for some reason assumed it was an output instead of an input, until i came across this video... so I tried it and yep, a stereo headphone to RCA cable works fine for video and mono audio, whether from a Gopro or a Raspberry Pi... of course the screen resolution is far too low (something like 50 lines at best, and no rectangular pixels either? very weird display technology) to use as a proper screen for the Pi, but i'll have to find an application for it now ;-)

  • @notyoung
    @notyoung 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Devices of that era use the 3 lead jack and plug from stereo headphones, not the 4 lead used with devices that have a microphone. The audio "interference" is the video signal being applied to the audio input of the TV because you're not using the correct cable.
    I have a similar battery-powered handheld color TV (the NTSC version for the US) and it has the original AV cable with a 3 lead plug - TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) instead of the current 4 lead TRRS (tip, ring, ring, sleeve).
    The brightness and contrast adjustments interact a bit, which is more obvious on a still image (RPi screen) than a moving image (TV).

      Thanks dude, I figured out the cable mis-match and the white audio RCA connector was video. I figured it would be ground, video, left and right so 4 pole. Really looking forward to playing with this one :-)

      Another culprit might be people treating others poorly for not solving a problem quickly and in as few steps as possible, as if following a script prescribed by a guru. Everyone thinks a master at anything didn't get tons of shit wrong before they mastered it.

      From using the Cinemizer Goggles I know that regretfully there are two different wirings for such AV-connectors. If you have the wrong adapter, its not enough to swap the RCA Jack because ground is wired differently. (I dont think this is the case here because IIRC you'd have no picture.)

    I had snagged one like this years ago, when they were new, with hopes of hooking it up to a Commodore 64 keytar rig I was working on at the time, as built-in monitor for the '64... with a builtin Prophet 64 cartridge, etc. I hit a major snag in that the monitor, although it was an active matrix display (good!) it had a very low resolution display (bad!). so even the '64's text was sadly unreadable. I should revisit this project using one of the modern composite 3.5" "rearview car display" monitors... which are $15. (I have one in a Retropie-in-an-atari-lynx project I made). Cheers, mate!

    The resolution on the lcd is way to low for text.
    Internally the lcd driver is rgb based. Quite possible to get a significant quality boost by highjacking those rgb signals.
    Edit: Have a camera from about the same era with a casio lcd, that thing looks quite nice tbh.

    For mine I just ordered a car backup monitor from Ebay as they're about £11, the electronics are a lot more compact, they use much less power and the picture quality is considerably better (I used to have a Casio TV-450). Gameboy "DMG" shells are around £6 from Ebay too. Biggest problem I still haven't 100% solved with mine is the battery, I've been trialing some 14500 3.7 volt li-po batteries but I'm not satisfied. Got some PS4 controller batteries on the way - the idea is I want to be able to change the batteries when out and about.

    I'm in, I have the exact same tv lying and the older casio around and will hookup the raspberry pi 2 to it if possible. Dunno what to do with the other.
    I also gonnna try if you can solder a car usb adapter to the batterypack to power the pi.
    Are 6 batteries enough to power the pi and tv? Maybe take an 8 pack like the GoPiGo.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. The TV is happy on 4.5v is seems so you will be fine with USB. It does say 6v in but there is some tolerance for batteries in there. I plan to use a LiPo and a boost board.

    I did something similar with a Sinclair TV but gutted it entirely and used one of the really cheap 2.2″ SPI LCDs off ebay and a Pi Model A. Would have been so much easier now the Pi Zero is available!

    • @stevec5000
      @stevec5000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Pi Zero 1.3 with Raspberian from the Pi website with a Kensington 4 port USB hub and a wireless keyboard. I also tried Ubunto Mate that's listed on the Pi site for ver 2 and 3 but that won't boot. That seems to be as far as it will go, it doesn't recognize any kind of USB wifi adapter or Ethernet adapter so there doesn't seem to be any way to network it which makes it pretty useless. How did you get it to work?

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is likely that your hub is not powered which can be a problem, the USB WiFi adaptors can draw a fair amount of current. It should be plug and play with WiFi on Raspbian, I didn't do anything special.
