The Moog Mother 32 creates that legendary FAT tubby sound thanks to the estimable Moog ladder filter and huge sounding oscillator. While this synth stands on its own, you can VASTLY expand its sound palette by utilizing "CV Tools" a collection of max devices that can interact with modular and semi modular synths using DC coupled audio interfaces. Here I use my trusty MOTU Ultralite mk5 and the mother 32 to create synth tones greater than the sum of their parts!

If you dont want to use up 2x extra of your inteface channels with for pitch and gate signals (and the calibration process) but want the FM Modulation capability, if your synth device has MIDI in, just use that but make a separate track in Ableton with the CV Instrument loaded and set its MIDI input to listen to your synth track. Set the Shaper CV out in the CV Instrument to your audio interface out # and you should be good! That way you can just use MIDI for pitch and gate and save your interface outputs for the funky stuff.

What are the câbles ou use ? Have are those special TRS to TS câbles like expert sleepers does or just a TS to TS with a jack TRS adapter to plug into the audio interface ? I am looking to buy an audio interface to send CVs but I am a bit concerned about this câbles problem. What’s your take on this ? Thanks !

This is a total game changer! Not only does it expand the possibilities with my modular but also will save me money in the long run

this is a fun technique. I've played with it a bit with my Grandmother, but now I want to try it again!

Could you please share info or images of the cables and the adapter you are using to connect to the Motu?

Haha, so many accidents at the same time. Yesterday I finished your sound design course and currently I'm waiting until RMEs are available to do exactly the same like you presented to us here with my mother. Great content as always. Thanks Anthony for being in my opinion the best teacher when it comes to good vibes and well done explanations. Keep on the great work. 👌🏻 Greetings from Germany

Great video. Excellent info. I’m still awaiting my DC coupled audio interface to connect my DFAM, Subharmonicon, 0coast, Strega, and some other modules. I have two basic questions-
    1. Since the cables from the interface need to be 1/4” TRS to 3.5mm TS (floating ring), can I simply use a regular TS eurorack cable and put a 1/4” stereo adapter on it? (It looks like that’s what you are using but want to be certain).
    2. This is more a question about audio interfaces in general, but say I have instruments going into all the available 1/4 inputs (1-8). And then I want to use the DC coupled outputs to send CV to several of those synths. Is say output 1 not necessarily linked to input 1, etc? In your video you randomly used outputs 3 and 4 to send CV and the M32 was plugged into input 7. But say in that case could you have other instruments plugged into inputs 3 and/or 4, and those would still be able to send CV from outputs 3 and 4 l, independent of instruments plugged into inputs 3 and 4?
Hopefully my question isn’t too convoluted, but I think you know what I’m asking.
Basically are the numbered outputs separate and independent from the numbered inputs?

Super coool! Does it transform audio into cv pitch control ( for example guitar or voice as the korg ms20?)

what kind of cables are you using? I seem to have read somewhere you need floating-ring cables for this...

The MOTU and all other “normal” audio interfaces I checked are only DC coupled on the outputs, not inputs. At least the specs only mention DC coupled for the outputs. Right? Then there are Eurorack modules that are DC coupled on both input and output like the Befaco AC/DC.

General DC coupled USB interface question: are the DC coupled outputs all discreet from the inputs? In other words if all my input channel #’s are connected to external instruments, does the mean none of the corresponding output channel #’s can be used to send CV?

This is pretty awesome, great tutorial on this! I looked a bit elsewhere and I think this shows the most potential of CV Tools I've seen yet. You mentioned that you cover CV Tools in more detail in some of your other courses, may I ask which ones?
Also I'm really excited about the giveaway, so many great things on there. Honestly your course bundle is probably the most exciting part for me. My chances are slim so I'm going to keep saving, but someday! I'd be so stoked to dive in, hope I win!

Hi, I got the Scarlett 20i18 Gen 3 soundcard that dont have DC coupled outputs, but I got an Arturia Beatstep Pro with CV outputs, can I use this as a workaround to make this work on my set ?

Great video! My only issue is how insanely unstable Live 11 is with CV tools on my brand new M2 Macbook. I have setup CV tools with an ES-9 interface AND a mother 32. Incredible potential, BUT, when you reopen the live set at a later time, the CV Instrument is nothing close to where you left off. This SUCKS if you are working on a song or bunch of songs long term. Having to set it up every time you open a saved set clearly negates any benefit for my workflow. And let's not start with the crashes. Anyone else having similar issues?

Another question- how would this work if the midi keyboard is also a semi modular synth (Moog Grandmother). So you are using the GM keyboard as the midi keyboard. But pitch and gate are already connected. But say I want to modulate the GM filter with a custom shape.

What funny is I was looking for solution how to make my midi controllers (Arturia Minilab 2 and Keylab mk2 ) working with M32 as other solutions (External devices) didn't work. And I've checked this video and CV tools and they work now (bit of quiet output but it works) However not everything you show here is working fine. When you get to the "tuning fork" tool it started glitching my M32. Not sure what it is. Was watching this video before and following it I bought one of the cheapest DC coupled interface Presonus Studio 26c with 2 inputs and 4 outputs. Not sure if that is causing this glitch sound. That is making mi wondering if everything what I watch will teach me or explain everything properly. It's same thing as in Photography - they say not tools make you good photographer but your skill. But when I try to learn from someone using fancy, expensive tools which work fine, then we need to think if we get same results using budget gear. Got this conclusion watching few other videos and trying to resolve my problem today. So have same doubts when think about investing in some expensive courses. I can, but I doubt if I get what I really need or if they will work for me.

Man, can't put mine working using the exact same ins and outs as you. I even have the same interface. The problem is when I click calibrate my Mother32 is on C (while you begin already at C3) 1 and I can't calibrate it, because I can't reach C3.

i cannot get this to work and i am losing my shit. please help... have VCA MODE: ON constant amp, no EG, turn VCA MODE: EG total silence nothing works. its like my GATE input is not triggering M32's envelope. ive tried many workarounds, NOTHING
EDIT: i have the exact same audio interface.

If you needed to enable inputs and outputs prior to trying this out, you may need to restart ableton in order for those inputs and outputs to work
