  • With the Season 1 of American Gods now complete. This is a good time, to look back at the American Gods novel by Neil Gaiman, and consider which old gods, will make appearances in Season 2. Who will Shadow Moon and Wednesday meet next? Bryan Fuller and Michael Green seem to be unafraid to make changes to the original story and characters, or add new characters, so we can't be sure. But, in this video I will breakdown the Mythology of all the Gods, Myths and Legendary figures, still remaining in the novel. After I cover a few from Season 1 that I missed in my last video.

    Kali is not dancing on her husband Shiva; she is, in fact, associated with the "Adi Para Shakti" (Primordial Cosmic Energy) also known as Durga. Originally, she is the Mahadevi (Goddess of the Goddess), named Parvati, who takes on her furious and angry form as Kali when her child is in danger of being harmed or killed by demons. The story unfolds as follows: when her child is threatened, Parvati becomes frightened and seeks help from other deities. However, they refuse to intervene, advising her to approach Mahadev(Shiva), her husband, for assistance. Despite her plea, Shiva decides not to intervene at that moment.
    Overwhelmed by anxiety and anger, Parvati transforms into Kali and descends to Earth to protect her child by annihilating the demons. However, in her uncontrollable rage, she continues her rampage, and even the other deities are unable to restrain her. Witnessing the chaos, Shiva, the Mahadev, descends to Earth and lies down in Kali's path. When she steps on him, she realizes her mistake-a grave offense. In that moment of realization, she halts her rampage and calms herself, reverting to her original form, Parvati. She then humbly asks for forgiveness from her husband, acknowledging the disrespect she showed by stepping on him.
    Additionally, she protrudes her tongues for two purposes: firstly, to frighten the demons, and secondly, as a gesture of remorse when she realizes she has unintentionally stepped on her husband.

      Missed so much of the story, this isn't fully accurate. Adi Para Shakti is the source of all that is. She is power and she is Mahadev's power. You left out Sati and all that too. It would be insanely large so anyone who is curious read Devi Bhagwata Mahapurana by Veda Vyasa...

    There is so many misinformation about goddess Kali. She is the destructive aspect of goddess Parvati, wife of lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati transformed into goddess Kali to fight a powerfull demon "rakthbeej". Rakthbeej had unique powers. If anyone was to fight him and even one drop of his blood fell to the ground, then that drop of blood would make an entire new clone of that demon. She killed all his clones while she drank all of their blood and made wore the garland made up of countless demon heads. After killing all the rakthbeej clones, she had become very angry and in anger she tried to kill everyone who came in her path, seeing this lord Shiva the god of destruction laid on her path. Kali unknowingly stepped on him, as Kali was actually Parvati, she felt ashamed after stepping on her husband, so she stuck her tongue out as a symbol of remorse.
    You guys might be thinking why does hinduism have god of destruction and "god of destruction" should be evil, but i'd like to tell you, this world goes on in an endless cycle of creation and destruction. What is made would eventually be destroyed and that is the rule of nature. So we have three gods namely, brahma, the god of creation; Vishnu, the preserver; shiva, the god of destruction.

    The djinn didn't steal his clothes, he granted his wish! - He had just arrived in the US recently and was failing miserably as a salesman. The djinn left him his taxi and his driver's ID had magically changed to show the salesman as the owner of the cab. So he gave him a new job that he could succeed at, which is why he's now driving the cab and wearing the djinn's clothes and sunglasses.
    They certainly did have a one night stand, though.

      As a Christian it is hard to see it displayed as such in the show and of course monitoring the explicit adult material is hard and not for the unfaithful Christian or those without the fast forward button. But I respect mythology and traditions. I love to learn and I always see where a moral lesson is at. I'm also an actor and skit writer so for my local community so I appreciate some of the great acting I've seen. However the depiction of Jesus is so far off from the Bible it is bothersome. Funny thing is the depiction of Jesus isn't far off from how Americans few Him. Its wrong and not Biblical but its kinda true society wise. Jesus isn't a clueless and gullible hippie not afraid to speak out against people or call them out or turn tables Or even whip them out the temple or talk smack to the devil. All of these He did in the Bible. He speaks with authority that is why the Pharisees killed Him. Yes He is love as God is , He is the literal embodiment of God's word. The father is in Him and He is in the father. He is the vine(example and connection to the Spirit) which our fruit comes from. The Fruit of the Spirit or the true marks of a Christian. Peace, Joy, Faithfulness, Self control, Forbearance, kindness, goodness, gentleness and love. (Those are the fruit of a Christian each moral has deep definition that deserves to be fully explored. Each one is ruined by misconceptions and society's definition which often is very different. But Spiritual fruit is beautiful and plants seeds in the minds of those who really need them to conquer their problems.) However God the father has given Christ all authority in heaven to judge. As a Just Judge He has wrath against the wicked. As the Good Shepherd He has a rod to rebuke his sheep and a staff to beat off the wolves. "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, your rod and your staff comfort me."
      So I like the show as a fiction and I don't take myself too seriously. I'm not here to debate religion but to show you at least one religious persons perspective. I don't think the show will be cancelled anytime soon.

      I think it more likely versions of Hindu gods will show up, due to the polarity of Bollywood. Most Hong Kong action flicks, or any movie featuring Jet Li or Jackie Chan, or even Japanese Samurai films that might have enough of a 'cult following' to register with Americans, won't name the actual dieties in a way that will stick. the exception maybe being the Jade Emperor and the Monkey King. Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest probably have a nice collection of Polynesian and Native American dieties. I wouldn't be surprised if other versions of some pagan good exist in Washington and Oregon, thanks to all the Wiccans. It will be interesting to see if Odin takes on an his Horned King aspect during the war to come.

      as wee seen in the episode where we meet Vulcan, they will be going to new and unexpected places in the show, especially if they wanna draw out the story for 5 seasons:)
      $50 says the Chinese gods will be found in a Chinatown of a major US city and to keep with how foreign gods came to America and how said gods evolved specifically to the American mindset the Japanese gods may be blatant bastardizations with heavy Anime influence since that's how most of America learned about Japan. hell I could see them being converted to the new gods by way of cheap Chinese manufacturing producing gaudy and tacky Kawaii merchandise.once great and powerful legends are now reduced to shallow parodies in order to be remebered. or soemthing.

      Santa Clause ate Five other Gods
      1) Dutch: Sinterklass, 2) Christ Child Present Giver AKA Chris Kringle 3) Three Wise Men 4) Victorian England: Father Christmas 5) Saint Nicholas
      1. Sinterklass: Dutch Patron Saint of Children. And the Dutch Translation of St. Nick. Sinterklass is now negativley associated with White Men in Black Face Playing Zwarte Piet
      2. Christ Kind/Chris Kringle: Martin Luther's version decided the Catholic was sinful so decided Baby Jesus should bring Presents. Jesus was aged from birth to 12 years Old
      3. The 3 Wise Men: Who first started the Christmas Giving tradition
      4. Father Christmas: The Victorian English Personification of Christmas invented in the 15th Century.
      5. St. Nicholas who was a Greek Saint in modern Demre Turkey. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, prostitutes, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, and students in various cities and countries around Europe.

    Personally I think the New Gods are really interesting, the fact they seem to work against each other or subvert each other while attempting to work toward a common goal, kind of like everything in the modern age.
    My Interpretation of the three known New Gods, are the Personification of the Internet (hence the reason why the young guy has the personality of the comments section here on TH-cam), the Personification of the Media (the female many faced deity of the famous, with her altar as the phone and television) and the Personification of the Modern Age (I think they referred to him as Mr World. Correction: Loki isn’t Aesir at all. His mother and father were both hrimthursar or frost giants. In the Golden Age of the world, the cosmic races traded hostages in order to keep the peace amongst them. Loki and Gullveig were thursar hostages sent to Asgard. Gullveig traveled back to Jotunheim when her father became sick from not being able to ravage the world of men and Loki was eventually imprisoned in the underworld for his crimes against the Gods and punished as the damned.
    Also Loki’s daughter isn’t Hel. Snorri’s our only source for this and we just don’t see it anywhere else. Hel is likely another name from Urd, the Goddess of fate, and Loki’s daughter is Leikn, a demon which embodies disease.
    Also Baldur’s death wasn’t even semi-accidental. Loki simply tricked Hodur into doing his dirty work so that Hodur would be blamed. It’s my belief that Loki killed Baldur out of jealousy, because Baldur represents everything Loki is not. Interestingly, to avenge Baldur, Odin had to father another son who wasn’t Hodur’s full brother. To do this he seduced a woman called Rind using black magic, basically raping her. Black magic is outlawed by the Gods and considered blasphemous and harmful so Odin was cast out of Asgard. He was accepted back only when he refused to side with the thursar or frost giants against the Gods. I think this demonstrates something important the Edda has to say about atonement. Loki did some very bad things but almost every time he made up for them, always in the most flamboyant way, but would turn right around and either repeat his wrongdoings or do something even worse. Meanwhile Odin committed what’s early described as the worst sin imaginable, and even though he stoned for it in what may be the simplest way, he was forgiven because he kept to his word and he never sided with evil again. In fact he will defend against evil come Ragnarök when he’ll lead an army of heroes to fight Loki who will lead an army of the damned against the Gods.

    One thing that struck me while watching the first season, is this nagging sense that Shadow Moon himself is someone of great importance (perhaps an ancient god)---but has forgotten who is is/was. There is clearly something much more to Shadow than has yet been revealed. He is key to what is coming and Wednesday knows and needs him for who he really is. Anyone agree?

      Panagiota Avdoulou I would think the Roman versions of the deities would show up because thee are more relevant to Americans. They show up in our pop culture. in school we are taught that the Greeks were the first step in democratic culture, then the Romans followed, spreaing civilization, which eventually comes to America. Plus, the gods in Disney movies tend to use the Roman names, not Greek.

      though i agree mostly, and we are pretty much saying the same thing, i just realized that even the names of the greek gods sound more roman and still, i get why. even Hercules and Hades or haephestus sound more Latin to be easier on pronunciation , with the latin suffix -us
      ( also werent they characters in a disney movie, i never much liked disney movies. )
      but you cant say that they dont show up in pop culture, what with all the movies these past years: 300, all the Hercules versions, even percy jackson (a moment to gag) or god of war.. or the fraternities in colleges? (is that still a thing? )
      it's just a bit sad overall.. that it's mostly a matter of 'convenience'

    Seems to me the man in the suit, whom Shadow can never remember, is likely Mímir, Odin's mentor of sorts in mythology who may in fact be Odin's maternal uncle. Mímir means "the Rememberer" and commonly had an epithet added, "Hodd-Mímir", which means something like "One of the Hidden Memory". In the myth the Vanir cut his head off and Odin has to preserve the head so he and Mímir can maintain council.

    If I remember correctly, Kali is not the wife of Shiva in Hindu mythology. Shiva's wife is actually Parvati, mother of Ganesha, who is the son of Shiva and Parvati.
    Having said this, my problem with not only this series, but any non-Indian series/movie where Hindu mythology is referred to is that they never look beyond Kali and Ganesha. There are more than 10K Gods, Goddesses, Demi-Gods, etc. in Hinduism, most with rich and interesting stories attached to them, and they always latch on to Kali and/or Ganesha. That's kinda lazy.

    • @bly3116

      If i remember correctly, Kali is the destructive counterpart/aspect of Parvati. So yes Kali is Shiva's wife.

    • @RvEijndhoven
      @RvEijndhoven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      To be fair, part of the reason why hardly anyone looks past a couple of the bigger gods (mostly Shiva and Kali) in Hinduism is that during the Raj, when most of India was under British rule, many Indian Hindus themselves did the same.
      See, the Brits considered anyone who wasn't a Christian as automatically less civilised and anyone who wasn't at least a monotheist as completely *un*civilised. Leading to some Indian Hindus claiming that Hinduism really only had one god (Shiva) and that all the many gods in Vedic writing were all either just aspects of that one god (in similar fashion to the Trinity, but larger) or angels. And also that Shiva just happened to be an aspect of the Christian god and that all the angels were Christian angels (except Kali, who was relegated to being a disguise of Satan).
      Pretty much the same way that for the Germanic/Nordic pantheon, most people really only know Wotan/Odin (equivocated with 'God'), Thunir/Thor ('the son of god') and Loki (equivocated with Satan)... And why the story of Ragnarok even exists. (It's essentially an attempt at a story about the end of the Norse/Germanic pantheon and the rise of Christianity. Hence why it ends with an 'Adam and Eve'-like couple becoming the new parents of humanity.)

    • @elbaecc
      @elbaecc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Robbert van Eijndhoven This actually supports my 'lazy' claim. It has been 70 years since India became a nation independent of the British. Almost 3/4th of a century. It's ripe time to dig deeper and bother learning/researching more into Hindu mythology and get more enriched story telling ideas. They can dig up dirt and half truths about historical figures like Shivaji and Gandhi, but can't be bothered with a surface level research into mythological figures that make for great storytelling. It's so lazy. When the only Gods they prefer to highlight are Gods of death and destruction, or an elephant headed one, it limits the scope and richness of possible storytelling.
      Take the series at hand. The creators/the author bothered to do a deep dive in Norse mythology, which as you say also tried to retcon it's mythology to fit monotheism. In contrast, the followers of monotheistic Hinduism are very few. If Norse, then why not others?

    Little long but worth reading.
    Fanation did a great job explaining Gods from different culture.However I would like to add my thoughts about Kali.Kali is a avatar of Parvati (Wife of Shiva) who manifests during war with demons.One such demon was Raktabija (literally translates to Seed of Blood) who was given boon that he can reproduce himself from every drop of his blood that reaches the ground.Kali killed the demon by slashing him multiple times and drinking his blood before it reaches the ground.But during the intense war she became enraged and started killing everyone in sight be it man, deva(angels) or asura(demons).Fearing the end of the world by enraged Kali deva(angels) pleaded Shiva to stop her wrath.Shiva knowing her wife's(Parvati/Kali) wrath didn't confront her directly,instead He chose to lie among the dead bodies in the battlefield.Eventually Kali stepped on Him and on realizing this She reacted by her tongue sticking out (a body language that shows that someone has committed a blunder) in shame.This iconic image comes to everyone's when they think of Kali,this doesn't mean that She has her tongue out every time.
    Peace Out

      You've said everything accurately...But you're an idiot, you know...
      And your grammar is bad...
      1st - It's 'Shiva knowing his wife' not 'her wife', 'her wife' would make Shiva a female, idiot....
      2nd - Deva literally means God not Angel, not some dumb shit, but GOD
      e.g. Mahadeva = Great god (Reference to Shiva)
      In Indian mythos Angels are referred to as devdoot, ever heard of that shithead?
      3rd - Raktabeeja doesn't mean 'Seed of Blood', it literally translates to 'Blood Seed', what's the difference? Well Seed of blood means seed made of blood, whereas Blood seed means blood is the seed....

    I'm curious on if any of H.P. Lovecraft's Gods will make an appearance. Although his mythology is of his own creation, it has great influence today. The Necronomicon is entirely fictional book, yet today is often thought of as real. It would be a good addition to the series, as it could blur both the line of fiction/nonfiction and New/Old gods.

      Dont know about the show, but in the novel shadow has a dream that shows him the god's and deities who perished along the ages, and one of the depiction is portrayed in such way that it can be a Babylonian god. Not all the Gods in Gaiman Universe made it to the time novel takes place.

      Made-up myths, like Lovecraft and Bunyan, are explicitly nonexistent

    • @Bacchian
      @Bacchian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lovecraft did make them up, and the ones he borrowed from actual myth (i.e., Dagon), he put his own spin on them. He said so himself in his letters. And I think the book actually mentions Shadow dreaming of octopus-faced gods, which certainly sounds like Cthulhu.

    Hey Fanation, love the video. I would like to offer a correction though. You said that Christians who believe in the Trinity see Jesus as three beings, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. That is technically incorrect. Jesus, while attributed to being God like the other two members, holds the place of the Son in the Trinity. The Orthodox model of the Trinity says that while all three are God, Jesus cannot be the Father, or vice versa, nor can the Holy Spirit be any of the other two. Instead, the three exist in a perichoretic relationship. Please don't take this correction as a frothy mouthed rebuke, I just want to make sure people are informed.

    • @StoryDive
      @StoryDive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry if I got this wrong. I've had a few comments on it so I think I definitely said it incorrectly. I looked it up from multiple sources but, I'll be honest, the concept of the Trinity is a bit confusing. So Jesus is one of 3 aspects of God in the Trinity? All 3 are considered God in the orthodox model, but one is not the other? Is that correct?

    • @TimTschida
      @TimTschida 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      It can be a confusing concept, even to Christians. Your last sentences are correct. Jesus is one of the three aspects of God in the Trinity. While each member is God, each aspect does not take on the aspects of the other members. For what it's worth, it took the church almost 500 years to get to this consensus.

      I feel I want to contribute more in explaining the Trinity, being a devout Catholic myself - who also loves the show and its premise by the way (and your videos too!). I can say Tim Tschida's explanation is sufficient, but I would add that they are not really aspects so much as they are persons. Persons in a sense that they have familial relationships with each other. The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, both (at least in the Catholic tradition) breath out the Holy Spirit out of their love for us. It is that dynamic which makes them separate persons but of the same substance - God.
      Several Christians would tell you that that is a bad analogy since that no human analogy can actually explain the Trinity. I agree. People can understand the Trinity if they do study it carefully with an open mind, but people can't really comprehend it. Just as how people can understand pi (or Odin's 200+ names: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_of_Odin) but cannot comprehend it.

      @@GrimmShadowsII didn't think that far into but yeah that I would imagine that would be the reason Mr Wednesday remembers him. N think about it aswell a charcoal suit? What burns? Charcoal. Who is it that's to burn in eternal damnation? Devil

    • @GrimmShadowsII
      @GrimmShadowsII 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the theory in the video is more likely honesty. I would think the devil would wear either a red suit or a pitch black or coal black suit. Maybe he's suppoesed to be some god thats forgotten or atleast almost forgotten. That would be kind of cool and explain Shadow's lack of memory of him there just enough memory/warship to keep him alive but not enough for him to be reconized or remembered later.

It would be harder and make less sense for the story to just be about old gods meeting up to take on new gods, plus it adds the extra layer of giving the new gods someone they can tempt into joining them who's already in the old gods', atleast Mr Wednesday's, confidence.

    The concept of trinity does not explain Jesus as three separate beings, it says that there is one God that manifests itself into three "persons": the father, the son and the holy ghost. Jesus is the son.

    When we're considering Mr. Wood and Mr. Stone, might they have a similar relationship to Mr. Town in that the two begot the other? If anything, wood and stone remain very viable, and though we're moving on to steel and other materials, the town leads on to the world. These older gods were sort of formless, but could take on a multitude of forms and thus able to reinvent themselves. Of all the gods, the most ancient and formless seem like they'd be able to adapt more readily.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Mr. Town represents the ideal of town or village life. So, he would be "worshipped" every time that some politician referred to "Small Town American Values" and such. But of course, he would be as old as human civilization itself. As for Mr. Wood and Mr. Stone: well, both the timber industry and the mining industry are largely responsible for the growth of America AND both industries are also doing well in the present. New technology and sustainable practices have made timber as a building material prominent again, while the rise of computers has led to demand for minerals previously considered waste (silicon and quartz particularly).

      If you are talking about the man they meet at Las Vegas, that man was based on the Hindu god Kubera, the god of Wealth and Mind. He has control over money and people's minds...that's why they meet him in Vegas (source of more money) and for the reason his name is forgettable is entirely the author's addition to show his claim over people's minds. He also has a liking to the Vedic drink Soma.

    It's worth mentioning that in any mythology that has the Norns or an equivalent of the Norns, such as the Fates, etc. that all the other immortals in said pantheon are terrified of them. They are potentially the most dangerous of any of the pantheons. In the case of the Norn, not only do they control a person's fate and life, but all of reality itself is potentially at their whim. Other immortals in their pantheons are so afraid of them that they will break their own rules. For instance, it is said that Odin dabbled in the "womanly" art of norse magic or seiðr, which the Norns are the masters of.
